Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the translation methods used by Grade XI students of SMA Swasta Budi Utomo Medan and to determine the dominant method in translating an analytical exposition text from English into Indonesian. This study applied Larson’s (1984) translation theory, focusing on Form-Based, Communicative, and Idiomatic Translation. A descriptive qualitative design was employed. The data were obtained from the translations of 21 students based on a text entitled The Importance of Learning English, which was divided into 30 segments, resulting in 630 translation units. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman (2014). The findings revealed that Form-Based Translation was the most dominant method (352 occurrences; 55.9%), followed by Communicative Translation (240 occurrences; 38.1%) and Idiomatic Translation (38 occurrences; 6.0%). Furthermore, 13 students (61.9%) were categorized as predominantly form-based translators, while 8 students (38.1%) were communicative translators, and none were idiomatic. These findings indicate that students tend to prioritize source language structure rather than natural meaning in the target language, suggesting the need to enhance their communicative translation competence.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis metode penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan novel Laut Bercerita menjadi The Sea Speaks His Name. The Sea Speaks His Name terjemahan John McGlynn.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of the drilling technique on the vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students at SMP Marisi. It employed a quantitative experimental design, involving an experimental class (VIII-1) that received vocabulary instruction using the drilling technique and a control class (VIII-2) that was taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests and were then analyzed using statistical methods to assess the effectiveness of the drilling technique in enhancing students' vocabulary acquisition. The findings revealed a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between students taught using the drilling technique and those who were not. Statistical analysis indicated that the experimental group's average pre-test score was 47.26, which increased to 65 in the post-test, reflecting an improvement of 17.73 points. In contrast, the control group's average score increased from 48 to 59.5, with a smaller gain of 11.5 points. The t-test analysis (t-count = 2.58, t-table = 2.021) confirmed that this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05), leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho). This finding aligned with previous research that emphasized the role of structured repetition in vocabulary learning. The drilling technique effectively strengthened vocabulary retention and allowed students to apply new words in vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The background of this research is because students of SMA N 3 Medan have weak writing skills in analytical exposition texts due to lack of mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and writing structure. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy in learning to write analytical exposition texts for students in grade XI of SMA Negeri 3 Medan. This study addresses the problem of students' difficulties in writing analytical exposition texts, particularly in organizing ideas and understanding text structures. The study employs a quantitative experimental method with a true experimental design, involving two groups: an experimental class taught using the TTW strategy and a control class taught through conventional methods. The research subjects were 72 class XI students of SMA Negeri 3 Medan who were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure students' writing performance. The research uses statistical data analysis techniques including normality tests, homogeneity tests, and t-tests. The findings show a significant improvement in the experimental group compared to the control group. The mean post-test score for the experimental group was 84.13, exceeding the control group's mean score of 71.2. In addition, the data collected for this study showed normal distribution. Based on the analysis conducted using the t-test, Tcount = 3.11 was obtained at a significant level of α = 5%, dk (n-1) = 14, so (15-1) = 14, so Ttable = 1.76. It can be concluded that Tcount > Ttable (3.11> 1.76).  The implication of the results of this study is that it shows that the Think Talk Write strategy can be widely adopted by English teachers as a more effective writing learning method than conventional methods to improve students' ability to write analytical exposition texts.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the finding that students of SMA Negeri 3 Medan often make mistakes in using inflectional affixes when writing, especially in the placement of affixes that can affect the quality of writing and message delivery. This research aims to analyze the misuse of inflexional affixes in analytical exposition texts written by SMA N 3 Medan students. Qualitative descriptive method is used to identify the types of errors and determine the dominant types of errors. The subjects of this study were 25 students of grade XI of SMA Negeri 3 Medan, but only 9 students' written works were analyzed as samples to obtain data on inflectional affixes errors. Data were obtained through the analysis of students' analytical exposition texts, with the results showing that the dominant error occurred in the addition category at 72%, followed by misformation at 20%, omission at 8%, and misordering at 10%. The most frequent errors were found in the use of morphemes such as -s, -es, -ly, and -ed that did not fit the rules. The findings show that students' lack of understanding of the function of inflectional affixes affects the quality of their writing, especially in delivering messages effectively. This research provides practical implications for teachers to improve teaching related to inflectional affixes and for students to better understand the importance of correct affix usage in writing texts. In addition, the results of this study can be a reference for other researchers who are interested in analyzing language errors, especially related to inflectional affixes, to support the development of more effective English learning methods in the future.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of utilizing Pinterest as a teaching tool on the descriptive writing abilities of SMAS GKPI Padang Bulan students in the tenth grade. The issue raised in this study is the difficulty students face in developing ideas, enriching vocabulary, and enhancing creativity in writing. The objective of this research is to determine whether Pinterest, as a visual-based platform, can enhance students' descriptive writing skills. The research method used is a quantitative experimental method involving two classes: class X-3 as the experimental group and class X-1 as the control group, each consisting of 26 students. Both groups were given a pre-test to measure the students' initial writing abilities. The experimental group was taught using Pinterest, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. After the treatment, a post-test was conducted to measure the improvement in writing skills. The research results show that the average score of the experimental group significantly increased from 61.38 to 77.23, while the control group increased from 54.81 to 67.27. The results of the t-test showed a t-value of 2.557, higher than the t-table value of 2.010 at a significance level of 0.05. This indicates a significant difference between the two groups. Thus, the use of Pinterest has a positive and significant impact on students' descriptive writing skills and can be considered an effective and innovative learning tool in teaching writing at the high school level.
