Abstract

Soft tissue tuberculosis is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis characterized by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of the subcutaneous tissue. This condition is important to recognize because its symptoms are nonspecific and often mimic malignancy, often referred to as a "good imitator." According to WHO data from 2023, the global TB incidence rate was 134 per 100,000 population, with Indonesia ranking second highest in the world. This study aims to describe the results of histopathological examinations of soft tissue tuberculosis patients at Madani General Hospital, Medan, during the period 2020–2024. The method used was a retrospective descriptive study through a review of the medical records of patients examined in the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory. Analysis was conducted on variables such as age, gender, lesion location, and histopathological results. The results showed that the largest age group was 19–27 years (25%), while the smallest was 10–18 years (7.5%). The gender distribution was balanced between males and females (50% each). The most common lesions were the neck and back (22.5%), while rarer locations, such as the axilla, buttocks, mandible, groin, and elbow, occurred in only 2.5% each. All cases were confirmed by histopathology, underscoring the importance of this examination to rule out malignancy and expedite the appropriate management of extrapulmonary tuberculosis.

The accessible population consisted of all medical records of reproductive and breast cancer patients at the Madani General Hospital Laboratory, a sample size of 32, using a purposive sampling technique. Univariate data analysis was presented in the form of frequency distributions, while bivariate analysis used the chi-square test. Data processing was performed using the computerized IBM SPSS version 25.0. Results: The highest number was in the age group of 52-56 years, totaling 8 people (25%), almost half of the respondents had an origin organ of endometrium and breast, totaling 12 people (41.4%), and almost half of the respondents had of the respodents had a diagnosis of endometrial adenocarcinoma. There was a correlation between organ origin and diagnosis in patients with reproductive system and breast cancer at the Madani General Hospital Laboratory during the 2019-2024 period (p=0.000). There was no correlation between age and diagnosis in patients with reproductive system and breast cancer at the Madani General Hospital Laboratory during the 2019-2024 period (p=0.097). Conclusion: There was a correlation between origin organ and diagnosis, but no correlation between age and diagnosis in patients with reproductive system and breast cancer at the Madani General Hospital Laboratory during the 2019-2024 period.

Most patients had a normal nutritional status (70%), and the most frequent chief complaint was painful swallowing (58.3%). Physical examination revealed tonsillar enlargement predominantly at grade T3-T3 (55%). Chronic tonsillitis was more prevalent (66.7%) than acute tonsillitis (33.3%). Operative treatment was more commonly performed (55%) compared to medical therapy (45%).
