Abstract

This study aims to adapt and validate The Racial & Ethnic Microaggressions Scale (REMS) into Indonesian in response to the lack of instruments that measure racial and ethnic microaggressions within the Indonesian context. The study involves the translation of REMS into Indonesian and instrument validation using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with a sample of 526 participants from various cultural backgrounds. The EFA results showed a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) value of 0.939 and a Bartlett's test value of 0.00, indicating that the data were suitable for factor analysis. In addition, five factors with eigenvalues > 1.0 and factor loadings > 0.30 were identified. Further CFA analysis indicated that the aspects of the Assumptions of Inferiority and Second-Class Citizen and Assumptions of Criminality had good validity with an Average Variance Extracted (AVE) > 0.5 and high reliability with Composite Reliability (CR) and Cronbach's Alpha (CA) > 0.7. In contrast, the aspects of Microinvalidations and Environmental Microaggressions showed lower validity and reliability. Therefore, this study provides a valid and reliable instrument for measuring racial and ethnic microaggressions in the Indonesian context, which can assist researchers and practitioners in identifying, understanding, and developing more effective interventions to address microaggressions in a multicultural society.

Abstract

Traditional gender roles have put psychological pressure on college students. The lack of gender-sensitive counseling services and studies in universities reinforces traditional gender roles. With this basis, this study aims to determine students' views on gender-sensitive counseling services. Qualitative research using semi-structured interviews was used to understand their perspectives deeply. Focus is given to formulating questions, aiming to address potential social biases that may hinder participants from providing honest information. Participants consisted of 4 guidance and counseling students (2 men and two women) who had not received lecture material on gender-sensitive counseling in a multicultural counseling course at one of the State Universities in Samarinda City. The results showed that there is an understanding of traditional gender roles, masculinity discourse in counseling services, and gender bias occurring in counselors can be obstacles in providing access to gender-sensitive mental health services. This research confirms the need to study and design gender-sensitive counseling services to access more inclusive mental health services in higher education.

Abstract

Gender microaggressions within counseling services are frequently challenging to detect due to their subtle or indirect nature, often remaining unnoticed by both counselors and clients. Despite their seemingly minor nature, these microaggressions contribute to a non-neutral therapeutic environment, adversely impacting the comfort and psychological well-being of individuals, especially within the inherent power asymmetries between counselors and students. This study employs a case study methodology to explore the various manifestations of gender microaggressions in high school guidance and counseling settings. Data were gathered via in-depth interviews and observations involving two counselors and six students. Analytical procedures were guided by microaggression theory, categorizing behaviors into microinsults, Microassaults, and microinvalidations. The results reveal that gender microaggressions are expressed through stereotypical gender roles, neglect of students' emotional experiences, and the use of gender-biased language. This research significantly advances the discourse on gender awareness in counseling practices and emphasizes the need for gender-sensitive training among counseling professionals to foster a more inclusive environment conducive to students’ psychological well-being.

Abstract

The Indonesian government formally enforces rules of study, worship, and work from home from March 16, 2020. Minimizing and limiting meetings involving physical contact is an effort to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus. These conditions have implications for the effectiveness of the learning process in higher education. The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of student psychology on online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research method uses a qualitative research type of phenomenology. The research subjects were 30 students of Mulawarman University who were interviewed via telephone. The research findings show that (1) students have started to get bored with online learning after the first two weeks of learning from home, (2) considerable anxiety on research subjects whose parents have low income, because they have to buy quotas to be able to participate in online learning, ( 3) mood or mood changes occur due to too many assignments and are considered ineffective by students. Suggestions and recommendations from this research are the need for severe efforts in assisting the psychological well-being of students through the involvement of counselors and psychologists.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the gender sensitivity competence of Guidance and Counseling (BK) teachers in handling cases of sexual harassment in schools in Lampung. The research employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five BK teachers who had experience in handling sexual harassment cases. The findings revealed that participants' understanding of gender issues and sexual harassment was still limited. Participants tended to view sexual harassment as a problem that occurs more frequently among female students, often overlooking the fact that male students are also vulnerable to becoming victims. This reflects a limited understanding of sexual harassment and gender issues. In terms of skills, the study found that participants had not fully mastered gender-sensitive counseling skills. For instance, some participants tended to blame the victim based on appearance or behavior, indicating a lack of ability to provide empathetic and unbiased support. Furthermore, the attitudes of BK teachers toward sexual harassment cases were still influenced by gender stereotypes. This study highlights the importance of ongoing training to enhance the gender sensitivity competence of BK teachers, enabling them to offer more empathetic and inclusive support to all victims of sexual harassment in the school environment.
