Abstract

The aim of this research was to compare two movies that contain similar perceptions of psychological impact on war, disappointment and regret, from Dunkirk and 1917 movies. Disappointment and regretting arise between British soldiers in movies that were directed by Christopher Nolan and Sam Mendes, which coincidentally both of these films raised the setting in World War I and II. Therefore, this research uses literary criticism and comparative literature methods in examining Dunkirk (2017) and 1917 (2019), to produce both similarities and differences in the psychological and emotional impact on British soldiers. In addition, this research uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach using Peirce’s sign semiotic analysis. The result of this research is that readers will be able to recognize the differences between the two movies from literary perspective and psychological review from the failures of war in Dunkirk (2017) and 1917 (2019). These two films ultimately interpret disappointment in almost the same way and regret in the form of the loss of a loved one. The behavior of people who experienced both psychological impacts also indicates similarities, sadness, annoyed, and angry. Keywords: disappointment, index, regretting, representations

Abstract

Objectives of this study were to analyze types of polysemy in the and to interpret polysemous words realized in the Frozen movie script. A method of this study was qualitative that produced descriptive data. The data were words that contained polysemy. A source of data in the study was Frozen (2013) movie scripts. The data were analyzed using suitable theories, including the type of polysemy proposed by Apresjan (1974) and meaning proposed by Lyons (1981). Based on the analysis, it was found that there are 26 pairs of data of polysemy that consist of two types of polysemy; 20 pairs of data are regular polysemy and six pairs of data were irregular polysemy. In the Frozen movie script, regular polysemy is more dominant than irregular polysemy because regular polysemy has the same systematic word but is different semantically or non-synonymous. Meanwhile, irregular polysemy has the same or true meaning as other words, and even it has no systematic relation. In conclusion, polysemy can arise in spoken or written language, so that the ambiguous word that have more than one meaning are categorized into polysemy.  Keywords: polysemy, meaning, frozen, movie script, semantics

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the International Youth Camp Program as a way to empower diversity in the educational field. Since empowering diversity among learners would bring a positive education atmosphere, such empowerment is essential for learners to adapt and embrace differences found in the classroom. This study used a qualitative method with research data collected from interviews and observation, involving 21 students from 13 countries attending the International Youth Camp in a private university in West Java. The interview results showed that the International Youth Camp helped students of different cultures and languages exchange ideas. Furthermore, the observation results imply that this event has successfully promoted diversity for both Indonesian and international students by introducing their cultures to each other. This program also provides opportunities for both Indonesian and international students to exchange and collaborate on their knowledge, language, culture, and character development. Therefore, this program contributes to the field of intercultural education by offering empirical evidence on how international youth programs can serve as effective platforms for fostering global citizenship, promoting inclusive values, and developing students’ intercultural competence. It underscores the significance of experiential, dialogue-based learning in enhancing students’ openness, adaptability, and respect for diversity in higher education settings.

Abstract

This study explores the representation and integration of moral values in English for Nusantara, an official English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbook used in Indonesian secondary schools. Utilizing a qualitative research design grounded in Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this research analyzes how moral values are constructed through textual features, discursive practices, and sociocultural contexts. Data were collected by systematically examining reading texts, dialogues, exercises, and visual materials across all units of the textbook. The analysis followed three stages: textual analysis, interpretation of discursive practices, and explanation of sociocultural implications. The findings reveal two dominant patterns: (1) the implicit and explicit embedding of moral values through character-driven scenarios and cultural narratives, and (2) the integration of local wisdom and universal values fostering multicultural awareness. These findings underscore the textbook's dual function as both a language learning tool and a medium for moral education, in line with Indonesia’s character education policy. The study offers implications for curriculum developers, textbook authors, and language educators in designing culturally grounded and value-oriented EFL materials.

Abstract

Merdeka Curriculum has changed how teachers prepare the lessons. Leading to the necessary understanding of critical aspects of the teaching module making. This study characterizes the learning objectives of the Merdeka curriculum teaching module using Schwiers' ABCD behavioral objectives and Bloom's learning domains theory. It also explores the factors that hinder teachers from fully comprehending the three learning domains (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor) when designing a teaching module. This study utilized a qualitative approach with two junior high school teachers as participants. Analyzing the teaching modules and interviewing participants were performed. Using Schwiers' ABCD and Bloom's learning domains model, this study found that teachers had already focused on learner-centered activities. However, some inconsistencies arose in the presence of 'ABCD' components and three learning objectives statements. Factors like demotivation, lack of prior knowledge, insufficient practice and feedback, understanding gaps, time constraints, and overcrowded curriculum hindered teachers from applying the learning domains. In conclusion, integrating ABCD components and learning domains in a teaching module may facilitate effective instructional design, promote learner-centered approaches, set clear expectations, and optimize the learning environment.Merdeka Curriculum has changed how teachers prepare the lessons. Abstract

This study explores the evolving nature of professional identity among experienced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers, with a specific focus on the role of reflective journaling. While much of the existing literature has emphasized the identity development of pre-service or novice teachers, this research highlights how identity continues to transform throughout a teacher’s career. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, the study involved six experienced EFL teachers who responded to open-ended reflective questions. Data were analyzed thematically, drawing from both participant narratives and NVivo-style coding, to identify patterns in reflective practice and professional self-understanding. The findings reveal that reflective journaling, whether formal, informal, or mental, serves as a powerful mediational tool for self-awareness, pedagogical growth, and emotional resilience. Participants reported that reflection helped them navigate institutional pressures, revise teaching philosophies, and reaffirm their commitment to student-centered learning. Themes such as motivation, personal values, emotional tension, and adaptability emerged as central to their reflective narratives. Additionally, teachers offered peer-oriented advice, further reinforcing reflection as a shared and generative practice within the EFL community. This study contributes to the discourse on lifelong teacher development by emphasizing the transformative and sustaining role of reflective practice in shaping teacher identity beyond the early stages of teaching.
