Abstract

Teachers in an elementary school located at Arcamanik, Bandung, experienced anxieties when speaking in front of audiences. The study aims to identify teachers' anxieties about public speaking training, evaluate how the training alleviates the anxieties, and assess its impact on teachers' public speaking performance. Qualitative approach is employed in this research by using interviews and observations with ten participants: an English teacher, three classroom teachers, and subject-specific teachers in Indonesian, tahfidz (Qur'anic memorization), Arabic, mathematics, and two Islamic religion teachers. Secondly, the old comer teachers tend to be steadier and calmer but have a fast-thinking proficiency in making solutions. Lastly, it seen from gender. Female teachers use public speaking theory the most as compared to male teachers who tend to be more ignorant. All the growth stemmed from the school-facilitated training equipping them for various roles – not only as classroom facilitators but also as service providers interacting with parents and at school event. Researchers recommend holding frequent public speaking workshops to assist teachers in overcoming their speaking anxieties. Abstract

This study investigates the potential of Chat GPT as a tool to develop students' prior knowledge in English language education. Recognizing the importance of foundational knowledge in effective language acquisition, this research explores how Chat GPT can support English language learners by pre-activating vocabulary, contextual understanding, and cultural awareness. Through a quasi-experimental design involving control and experimental groups, the study examines the effectiveness of Chat GPT-assisted learning activities compared to traditional methods. Participants in the experimental group receive customized pre-learning prompts and exercises generated by Chat GPT, aiming to bridge gaps in cultural and contextual understanding prior to formal instruction. Data is collected via pre- and post-tests, structured interviews, and observations to measure improvements in students’ readiness and comprehension. The findings highlight the impact of AI-driven tools on enhancing student engagement and knowledge acquisition in language education, offering practical insights into Chat GPT’s role in supporting differentiated instruction and personalized learning. This study contributes to pedagogical approaches by positioning Chat GPT as an adaptable, resource-efficient tool for language educators, especially in contexts where access to native English interaction is limited. The results provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating AI in classrooms, supporting instructional design and policy development for sustainable and inclusive education practices.

Abstract

This study investigated how teachers implemented interactive teaching strategies to increase the engagement of 15 elementary school students aged 7-10 years in an online English-speaking class. Using a qualitative case study approach, data was collected through observing one online class session conducted using Zoom Meetings. Thematic analysis identified various strategies, such as the use of multimedia (movies), interactive platforms (Quizizz), and structured participation methods (e.g., gender-based turn-taking). Repetition techniques were also found to be a tool to reinforce learning. The results of this study show that interactive strategies are able to improve students' engagement and speaking skills in an online environment. This research provides practical recommendations for educators in creating engaging and effective learning experiences in the online classroom.

Abstract

English is a dominant global language, with internet media playing a crucial role in language learning. This study examines EFL learners’ perceptions of internet media’s impact on speaking skills, focusing on vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews with five EFL learners from diverse backgrounds. The results indicate that internet media, particularly YouTube, social media, and online games, enhance language acquisition through exposure to authentic content. However, barriers such as the lack of conversation partners and low confidence hinder speaking practice. While internet media facilitates passive learning, interactiveengagement remains essential for fluency. This study recommends integrating video-based learning and interactive language platforms to enhance speaking skills effectively.

Children's language is unique and has its own characteristics. It’s unique because the utterance children produce has hidden meanings that are not understood. In this line, when a child asks something, it does not mean that the child is asking, but it could be that the meaning of the utterance is requesting something. This research was intended to discover the types and function in a child’s utterances that were found in the movie. It was descriptive qualitative research. The data in this study was in the form of an utterance used by a child in The Sea Beast. The illocutionary acts theory was used to answer the questions of this research. Abstract

This study examines linguistic strategies in conveying women's empowerment messages through social media, specifically Instagram and YouTube. This study combines women's language theory by Robin Lakoff and presupposition theory by George Yule. The method used is descriptive qualitative with purposive sampling technique, focusing on posts and statements that contain elements of women's empowerment. The results show various features of women's language such as lexical hedges, intensifiers, and empty adjectives, as well as various types of presuppositions such as existential and factive presupposition, which implicitly reinforce empowerment narratives. This study shows how language on social media can shape powerful social discourses about women's identities and struggles.

Abstract

This article explores the contribution of curriculum innovation in writing instruction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at junior high schools in Indonesia. Through a qualitative study design, employing semi-structured interviews with EFL teachers, the research investigates their beliefs, implementation models, and challenges encountered during curriculum changes. The findings reveal that teachers generally perceive curriculum innovation as beneficial and educative. However, the lack of resources, inadequate training, and limited institutional support are significant barriers that hinder the effective implementation of the innovations. Teachers reported that these constraints impede their ability to fully integrate and apply the new curriculum effectively in the classroom. In response, policy recommendations are made, emphasizing the importance of providing sufficient resources, ongoing professional development, and stronger institutional support. These actions would help bridge the gap between curriculum innovations and the practical realities of classroom teaching, enabling teachers to optimize the benefits of curriculum changes in EFL instruction.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to compare two movies that contain similar perceptions of psychological impact on war, disappointment and regret, from Dunkirk and 1917 movies. Disappointment and regretting arise between British soldiers in movies that were directed by Christopher Nolan and Sam Mendes, which coincidentally both of these films raised the setting in World War I and II. Therefore, this research uses literary criticism and comparative literature methods in examining Dunkirk (2017) and 1917 (2019), to produce both similarities and differences in the psychological and emotional impact on British soldiers. In addition, this research uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach using Peirce’s sign semiotic analysis. The result of this research is that readers will be able to recognize the differences between the two movies from literary perspective and psychological review from the failures of war in Dunkirk (2017) and 1917 (2019). These two films ultimately interpret disappointment in almost the same way and regret in the form of the loss of a loved one. The behavior of people who experienced both psychological impacts also indicates similarities, sadness, annoyed, and angry. Keywords: disappointment, index, regretting, representations
