Abstract

This research aims to: (1) describe the personality of the character Kugy in the novel Perahu Kertas by Dewi Lestari, (2) describe the personality of the character Saya in the novel Si Parasit Lajang by Ayu Utami, (3) describe the intertextual relationship between the personality of the character Kugy in the novel Perahu Kertas by Dewi Lestari and I am in the novel Si Parasite Single by Ayu Utami. This type of research is qualitative research using descriptive analysis methods. The data in this research is in the form of sentences and dialogue contained in the novel. The steps taken are (1) data comparison, (2) categorization, (3) presenting data with tabulation and description, and (4) interpreting to draw conclusions, and (5) reporting research results. Based on data analysis and discussion of the personality of the character Kugy in the novel Perahu Kertas by Dewi Lestari, findings were obtained based on the nine personality types of Baron and Elizabeth's theory, that the figure of Kugy is a romantic personality. Furthermore, the personality of the female character Saya in the novel Si Perasit Lajang by Ayu Utami is that the character Saya has an observer personality. Viewed from various aspects, the novels Perahu Kertas and Si Parasit Lajang in intertextual studies are character transformations, themes of love and friendship, as well as the influence of popular culture.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the understanding of teachers in in-service teacher professional education program [ITPEP] and the implementation of learning tools in the form of teaching modules, teaching materials, student worksheet, learning media, and grid and evaluation. The theory used in this research is the Merdeka Curriculum and learning tools in the Merdeka Curriculum. This descriptive qualitative research describes how ITPEP teachers understand the learning tools. Data were collected using a questionnaire sent via Google Forms because the average of ITPEP teachers Batch III students come from various regions. Furthermore, the data are analyzed using a Likert scale to determine the teachers' understanding of the learning tools in the Merdeka Curriculum. The results indicated More than 85% of teachers participating in the research showed a lack of in-depth understanding of the various components of learning tools and how to apply them effectively in the learning process. The main obstacles faced include the lack of adequate training, limited school infrastructure and facilities, especially access to technology, and difficulty adapting to the change in learning paradigm from a teacher-centered approach to a learner-centered approach.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the image of women and the form of gender injustice contained in the novel Masih Abadak Surga Untukku? by Naya R and Tears of Marriage by Rahmi Novaliza. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method and the main theory used is the theory of Sugihastuti and Suharto (2016) about the image of women and Fakih (2020) about gender injustice. The data collection technique is done by intensive reading, recording, and classifying relevant quotes from both novels. The results of the research show that the image of women in both novels includes physical, psychological, and social images. The physical image is described through the description of the female figure's body related to beauty, softness, and weakness. The psychic image appears from the feelings, thoughts, and inner struggle of female characters. While the social image is seen through the role of women in the family and society. On the other hand, the form of gender injustice found in the novel Masih Abadak Surga Untukku? includes subordination and workload, while the form of gender injustice in Air Mata Pernikanan includes marginalization, subordination, stereotypes, violence, and workload. An intertextual comparison between the two novels shows that the Tears of Marriage are more complex in representing gender inequality and the suffering of women in social relations, while Is There Still Heaven For Me? more emphasis on inner upheaval and the position of women in the family. The conclusion of this research is that both novels reflect the social reality of gender inequality that still binds women, although with different intensity and form.

Abstract

This study examines the role of politeness in language as a reflection of the speaker’s ethics and character, both in everyday communication and film dialogues. The film Aisyah Biarkan Kami Bersaudara was selected due to its depiction of a Muslim teacher in a predominantly non-Muslim area, delivering messages of tolerance, unity, and humanity. The research aims to identify the types of speech acts, describe politeness strategies, and analyze violations of politeness in the film’s dialogue. Using a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, data were collected through transcription and analyzed using Searle's speech act theory and Leech's politeness principles. The study found 452 speech acts, with directive acts being the most prevalent. Politeness was observed in 47 instances, with the sympathy maxim being dominant, while 20 violations were identified, mainly involving the maxim of agreement. The findings contribute to the development of pragmatic studies and cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the challenges faced by Indonesian language teachers in developing literary literacy among senior high school students in Sungai Penuh City during the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. The study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. Data were collected through a Google Form–based questionnaire distributed to Indonesian language teachers at the senior high school level. The research instrument was designed using a Likert scale to capture teachers’ perceptions of the implementation of literary literacy in schools. The findings indicate that teachers encounter several major challenges in developing literary literacy, including limited instructional time, teachers’ readiness to design creative and contextual literary learning, students’ low interest in reading literary works, and limited availability of literary teaching materials. Limited instructional time emerged as the most dominant challenge, followed by teachers’ need for training and mentoring in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum. These findings suggest that the development of literary literacy within the Merdeka Curriculum requires sustained support, including the enhancement of teachers’ competencies, the provision of relevant teaching materials, and the adoption of instructional strategies that can increase students’ interest and engagement. This study is expected to contribute to the development of literary learning at the secondary school level.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of Project Based Learning (PjBL) on students’ learning activities and negotiation text writing skills at the tenth-grade level of SMAN 1 Pagai Utara Selatan. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Solomon Four-Group Design. The sample consisted of 80 students divided into two experimental groups and two control groups. Data were collected through a learning activity questionnaire and a writing test, and analyzed using normality testing, homogeneity testing, paired sample t-test, and independent sample t-test at a 0.05 significance level. The results indicate that PjBL significantly improved students’ learning activities (p < 0.001). Within-group analysis showed a significant improvement in writing skills in the experimental group (p < 0.001). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the experimental and control groups in the posttest scores at the 5% level (p = 0.056), although the experimental group achieved a higher mean score. These findings suggest that PjBL effectively enhances learning engagement and contributes to improving negotiation text writing skills.

Abstract

Language variation in the political sphere gives rise to registers shaped by the speakers’ styles, which often neglect principles of politeness. This study aims to analyze the politeness strategies employed by Mahyeldi and Epyardi Asda in the 2024 West Sumatra Gubernatorial Public Debate based on Geoffrey Leech’s (1983) Politeness Principle and the concept of kato nan ampek (Navis, 1986). This research adopts a qualitative approach using pragmatic discourse analysis. The data consist of transcriptions of both candidates’ utterances, which were examined according to Leech’s six politeness maxims and the values of kato nan ampek. Data collection techniques included observation, transcription, note-taking, data classification, documentation, and data inventory. The data were analyzed through reduction, data presentation, contextual analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that out of 37 analyzed utterances, only 9 complied with Geoffrey Leech’s politeness principles, while 28 violated them. Compliance was predominantly demonstrated by Mahyeldi, particularly in the tact maxim, whereas Epyardi Asda showed no compliance and more frequently violated the agreement, tact, and modesty maxims. Based on the kato nan ampek framework, Mahyeldi tended to use polite forms in kato mandaki and kato malereang, while Epyardi Asda more frequently violated kato mandaki through derogatory insinuations. These differences have implications for the construction of public image and societal perception, indicating that linguistic politeness plays a significant role in political communication.

Abstract

This study aims to examine: (1). What are the forms of code switching and code mixing in the speech acts of teachers at SMAN 1 Panti Pasaman, (2). What are the types of code switching and code mixing in the speech acts of teachers at SMAN 1 Panti Pasaman, (3). What are the functions of code switching and code mixing carried out by speakers in the speech acts of teachers at SMAN 1 Panti Pasaman, and (4). What are the factors that cause the occurrence of code switching and code mixing in the speech acts of teachers at SMAN 1 Panti Pasaman. In this case, the author uses a qualitative research method, while the method used is a descriptive method, namely a method that describes the things to be studied in the form of words. This study is very suitable for describing and processing data in research so that it can become an interesting descriptive description. Several reasons are used for a qualitative approach in this study. This study will be directed at Code Switching and Code Mixing in the Speech Acts of Teachers at SMAN 1 Panti Pasaman from a Sociolinguistic Perspective. Want to ensure the accuracy of the data. Because social data is difficult to verify without knowing what it means.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the difficulties faced by students in writing advertising texts at SMP Negeri 8 Padang. This is because teachers do not use varied learning models in the learning process so that students have low learning interest. This study aims to describe the influence of the jigsaw model and learning interest on advertising text writing skills. This type of research is quantitative research with an experimental method. This research was conducted in class VIII of SMP Negeri 8 Padang. The sample of this research was students of class VIII. G as the experimental class and students of class VIII. H as the control class. There are two research instruments, namely a performance test of advertising text writing skills and a questionnaire to measure students' learning interest. Research data collection techniques, namely questionnaires were given to students in the experimental class and the control class. Next, the teacher gave a pretest of advertising text writing skills to see students' initial abilities. The teacher then carried out learning using the jigsaw model in the experimental class and the conventional model in the control class. Next, the teacher gave a posttest of advertising text writing skills to measure students' final abilities. Based on the results of the study, several things can be concluded as follows. First, there is a difference in the results of the argumentative text writing skills test of students using the jigsaw model with the results of the advertising text writing skills test of students using the conventional model with a sig value of 0.000 < 0.05. Second, there is a difference between the results of the advertising text writing skills performance test of students with high learning interest using the jigsaw model with the results of the advertising text writing skills performance test of students with high learning interest using the conventional model with a sig value of 0.000 < 0.05. Third, there is a difference between the results of the advertising text writing skills performance test of students with low learning interest using the jigsaw model with the results of the advertising text writing skills performance test of students with low learning interest using the conventional model with a sig value of 0.003 < 0.05. Fourth, there is no interaction between the problem based learning model and students' learning motivation in influencing the argumentative text writing skills because Fcount (1.403) < Ftable (4.2).

Abstract

Character education is a form of human activity in which there is an educational action, intended for the next generation. The purpose of character education is to shape the individual continuously and train one's abilities in order to move towards a better life. As for this research, there is knowing the theme, characterization, plot and setting in the novel Teruslah Bodoh Jangan Pintar by Tere Liye and Ladang Perminus by Ramadhan K.H., knowing the value of educational character contained in the novel Teruslah Bodoh Jangan Pintar by Tere Liye and the novel Ladang Perminus by Ramadhan K.H., and the similarities and differences in the value of character education in the novel Teruslah Bodoh Jangan Pintar by Tere Liye and the novel Ladang Perminus by Ramadhan K.H. The type of research used is qualitative research that produces descriptive data. The research method used is a descriptive method. the relationship between the two novels. Both novels have the same theme about the problem of character education values, The plots of the two novels are different, Teruslah Bodoh Jangan Pintar has a forward-backward plot while Ladang Perminus has a forward plot. The background of the two novels is somewhat different. The novel "Keep Being Stupid, Don't Be Smart" is set in a former mining site, a rural area, and a courtroom, while the novel "Ladang Perminus" is set at the Perminus company and also in Singapore. Despite their different settings, the two novels complement each other in providing an understanding of the character values ​​of education: love of country, environmental awareness, and social awareness.
