Abstract

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the leading causes of limitations in performing activities that impact in impaired knee function and mobility, necessitating physiotherapy intervention. Advancements in current technology have made it possible to receive treatment without the need for in-person meetings. This study aims to assess the feasibility of telehealth physiotherapy in improving knee function in OA patients. The design of study is Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, with study sources obtained from Scopus, ProQuest, and PubMed databases using keywords based on the PICO framework. Data analysis was performed using Review Manager. The study identified a total of 1.726 articles, with a final screening resulting in 5 articles that were further examined. Each study had a Randomized Control Trials (RCT) research design and was oriented towards comparing telehealth with face-to-face interventions. Telerehabilitation did not show significant changes due to various factors, including the study's duration, physiotherapist supervision, patient motivation and adherence, as well as the comprehensiveness of exercise instructions.

Abstract

Quality of Life (QoL) is a crucial aspect of an individual's well-being, and Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative disease that significantly impacts QoL. OA patients experience functional impairment, leading to difficulty and pain in activities such as standing, squatting, walking, and climbing stairs. Land-based exercise is a non-pharmacological intervention recommended for long-term knee pain, as it can improve muscle strength, relieve pain, and improve function. However, excessive exercise can worsen pain. This systematic review evaluates literature on land-based exercise interventions that show significant effects on QoL and decrease in knee pain for patients with knee OA. The review includes six publications with randomized controlled trials and experimental studies that examined the impact of land-based exercise on knee OA. The review focuses on exercises such as yoga, strengthening exercises, Tai Ji, and Wuxinqi Exercise. The review finds that land-based exercise has a positive impact on physical function, pain reduction, and quality of life for patients with knee OA. Three publications with yoga and Wuxinqi Exercise showed significant results in pain management, increasing knee strength, and reducing pain in knee OA patients. The review concludes that land-based exercise is an appropriate intervention for people with knee OA related to pain and functional impairment.

Abstract

Background: DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) is a condition where muscle pain appears shortly after activity, usually occurring shortly after doing sports or activities that exceed the usual capacity. It can also be caused by doing sports or activities he has never done before. DOMS usually appears in a healthy person but mainly occurs in athletes. A sports massage intervention is recommended to reduce the DOMS in the recovery process.Purpose: To determine whether sports massage can reduce DOMS and provide recovery effects on a person.Method: This research is a systematic review and meta-analysis using the PRISMA diagram. Performed article search with eligibility test with PICO. Population: people with DOMS. Intervention: Sport massage. Comparison: control treatment. Outcome: pain reduction. The articles used came from 2 databases, namely PubMed and Science Direct. The keywords in this article search are "DOMS," AND "Recovery," AND "Sport massage." The inclusion criteria in this study were full-text articles with a Randomized Control Trial research design. The relationship measure used is Mean SD. This article was analyzed using the Review Manager 5.4 application. Results: The eight articles reviewed were from California, Canada, Spain, the USA, South Africa, and Brazil. The results showed that sports massage could not reduce DOMS effectively and significantly. A person with DOMS who received sports massage had an average pain score of -0.19, lower than someone who received control treatment (SMD= -0.19; 95% CI= -1.93 to 0.10; p=0.19).Conclusion: Sports massage cannot reduce DOMS in the recovery process effectively and significantly.
