Abstract

The current condition of the Matsumoto MDX-178F diesel engine for the Energy Efficient Car Competition (KMHE) is not at its maximum performance, the efficiency and torque it produces have decreased from the initial engine specifications. The purpose of this activity is to recondition and modify the air intake and exhaust system on the Matsumoto MDX-178F diesel engine to optimize engine performance, increase combustion efficiency, and reduce exhaust emissions. The reconditioning method begins with an evaluation of the air intake and exhaust system which includes components such as air ducts, filters, exhaust ducts, head parts, pistons, cylinders, injectors and other parts. Repairs or replacements are carried out on components that are damaged or require readjustment. The modification process is carried out by porting and polishing the intake and exhaust lines. The increase in air flow is measured using a flow bench, the increase in power is measured using a dynotest, the reduction in exhaust emissions is measured using an exhaust gas analyzer. This study provides a scientific contribution through the integrated application of reconditioning and geometric optimization of intake–exhaust channels based on porting and polishing in a single-cylinder diesel engine within the context of energy-efficient vehicles, an area that remains limited in previous research. The results of this reconditioning and modification can show a significant increase in engine performance, including increased power and combustion efficiency. so that the engine becomes more environmentally friendly. The conclusion shows that the reconditioning and modification of the intake and exhaust systems of the Matsumoto MDX-170F diesel engine not only improves engine performance, but also improves fuel economy and reduces environmental impact.

Abstract

Abstract

The Pre-Delivery Installation (PDI) Department of PT. XYZ is tasked with carrying out the installation process of imported heavy equipment attachment units, including one of the leading excavator units. Obstacles that arise can affect installation productivity. The gap between the actual installation results of 78 units and the company's target of 156 units requires a solution or resolution to improve the process that can be implemented. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the wait time associated with decreased productivity, which is the longest component of the installation process. This work has a purpose to analyze lead time of the excavator attachment unit installation process. The method is applied with a time study approach referring to data sheets and observations, then processing lead time data using pie charts, Pareto diagrams, and fishbone diagrams. Furthermore, we review the planning calendar, realization, and improvement engineering. Reduction is carried out by providing additional work personnel and procuring sanding machine tools to reduce the installation and critical time of the planning calendar. The realization condition for 562 minutes with the implementation of improvement engineering is reduced to 318 minutes. Thus, it can speed up implementation time of the excavator attachment in unit installation process to 224 minutes or 44%.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the epoxy coating system on NEW773CAT heavy equipment unit operating in a mining environment. The research primarily focuses on the influence of surface preparation methods, dry film thickness (DFT), and coating type on corrosion resistance and adhesion strength. Field case studies, thickness measurements, and visual inspections were employed to assess the performance of coating system. The results reveal that average coating thickness of 396 μm significantly exceeds the minimum ISO 12944 category C5-I standard, which specifies a DFT of 320-400 μm for high corrosivity environments. The surface preparation process using high-pressure cleaning and power tool cleaning (ST 3.0) was found to produce an ideal substrate for epoxy coating application. The use of high-built epoxy mastic as the primer and Aliphatic Polyurethane as the top coat demonstrated excellent corrosion protection and optimal interlayer adhesion. The spray application technique resulted in a uniform coating with no visible defects. This study emphasizes the importance of combining effective surface preparation and precise coating specifications to ensure long-term protection of metal surfaces in harsh environments. The findings suggest that epoxy coating systems, when correctly applied and prepared, can provide robust protection against corrosion, extending the service life of heavy equipment exposed to aggressive conditions like those found in mining operations.

Abstract

The increasing demand for clean electrical energy in Indonesia highlights the need to optimize solar power generation technologies. Bifacial photovoltaic (PV) panels offer higher energy yield by utilizing solar radiation from both front and rear sides; however, their performance is strongly influenced by reflective properties of the surface beneath the panel. This study aims to analyze the effect of reflective surface variations with different albedo values on the power output and efficiency of bifacial solar panels under tropical rainy season conditions. An experimental method was employed using three identical bifacial PV modules (545 Wp) installed above asphalt, paving block, and white-painted surfaces. The modules were installed with a tilt angle of 8°, an azimuth angle of 0° (facing north), and a height of 60 cm above the surface. Measurements of solar irradiance, voltage, and current were conducted at irradiance levels ranging from 203 to 1001 W/m². Data were collected three days with same conditions and parameter in November 2024 during the period time from 09:00 to 15:00. The results show that to enhance rear-side irradiance, as indicated by the increase in output power observed in this study, leading to increased output power and efficiency. The white-painted surface produced the highest performance, achieving an average power increase of approximately 9.6% and a maximum efficiency of 16.3% compared to asphalt and paving block surfaces. These findings indicate that high-albedo surfaces are an effective solution for improving bifacial solar panel performance, particularly in wet tropical climates such as Bandung, Indonesia.

Abstract

Corrosion protection is a critical aspect of industrial maintenance because coating quality directly influences equipment durability, operational reliability, and long-term maintenance efficiency. However, coating assessments in industrial practice often focus on compliance with thickness specifications without comprehensively evaluating the relationship between surface preparation quality, environmental conditions, coating thickness, and final coating performance under actual shutdown maintenance conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the coating process during total plant shutdown (TPS) painting work on four industrial components: the sole plate sag mill, cover motor ball mill, base frame motor bubble crusher, and OHC girder. A field-based coating performance assessment was conducted using final painting reports, visual inspection records, environmental condition monitoring, surface preparation evaluation, and dry film thickness (DFT) measurements. Surface preparation was carried out using ST 3/SSPC-SP 3 mechanical cleaning, while coating performance was evaluated against the specified DFT requirements. The results showed that all inspected components satisfied the acceptance criteria, with primer DFT values exceeding 150 µm and final DFT values exceeding the minimum system requirement of 225 µm. Final coating thickness increased by 263–347 µm compared to the existing condition, indicating the formation of a protective coating layer. Nevertheless, noticeable thickness variations among measurement locations suggest opportunities for improving application consistency and process control. These findings demonstrate that the applied coating system met the specified performance requirements and provided effective corrosion protection under field conditions, while further optimization of coating application practices is required to achieve more uniform and efficient coating performance.

Abstract

Organic waste management, particularly from canteens or kitchens, which often consists of leftover meat, fish, and vegetables, remains a significant challenge. If processed properly, this waste has the potential to be used as maggot feed. To process this organic waste, it is necessary to develop an organic waste slurry machine designed to process organic waste from the Pujasera or campus canteen into maggot feed. The development process for this machine includes six stages: Planning, Conceptual design, Detailed design, Technical documentation, Manufacturing and assembly, and Testing. From these stages, a compact organic waste slurry machine is produced with dimensions of 815 x 425 x 840 mm, driven by a 1-phase electric motor with a power of 1.5 HP (1,100 Watts) and a rotation speed of 1,050 RPM. The test results show that this machine is effective in shredding organic waste with a capacity of 24 kg/hour, a maximum power of 1,037 Watts, and an energy consumption of 0.860 kWh. These results provide an innovative and economical solution, promoting the use of organic waste as a valuable resource.

Abstract

Renewable energy, particularly hydropower, has become an important alternative in reducing dependence on fossil fuels. One widely used technology is the propeller turbine, which utilizes airfoil-based blade profiles to enhance the conversion of fluid energy into mechanical energy. This study aims to analyze the simulation performance of a propeller turbine with variations of NACA 5310 and NACA 6412 airfoil profiles under low-head conditions. The methodology employed is a numerical simulation based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The observed variables include flow rate, pressure distribution, rotational speed, torque, hydraulic power, mechanical power, and turbine efficiency at head variations of 3 m and 5 m. The simulation results indicate that increasing the head from 3 m to 5 m significantly increases the flow rate, torque, and mechanical power; however, the turbine efficiency decreases drastically from approximately 69–71% at a 3 m head to about 30% at a 5 m head. The NACA 6412 profile demonstrates slightly better performance than the NACA 5310 profile, particularly in terms of efficiency and torque stability. Overall, both airfoil profiles are more suitable for low-head operating conditions and therefore have strong potential for application in micro-hydro power plants.
