Abstract

This study explores the expression of impoliteness strategies by Indonesian male and female netizens in the context of the Vadel issue on Instagram. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis focuses on comments gathered from the platform, applying Culpeper’s (1996) framework of impoliteness strategies. The findings reveal significant gender-based differences in how impoliteness is expressed. Female commenters often employed bald-on-record and negative impoliteness strategies, reflecting a tendency toward subtle, passive-aggressive communication. In contrast, male commenters frequently utilized positive impoliteness and sarcasm, showcasing a more overtly confrontational style. Despite these differences, both genders shared a preference for direct expressions of hostility, as withhold politeness was notably absent. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of gender dynamics in digital interactions, emphasizing the diverse ways impoliteness manifests in social media discourse.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the challenges faced by Indonesian EFL students in academic writing, specifically the errors they made while writing scholarship application essays. The study focused on identifying syntactical and morphological errors and understanding their sources and reasons. The data consisted of 20 essays from third-semester students in an academic writing course at a private Indonesian university. Two English language lecturers reviewed the essays twice to identify the errors. The findings revealed that syntactic errors were the most common, with 132 instances (61.69%), followed by punctuation and capitalization errors with 50 instances (23.37%), and morphological errors were the least frequent with 32 instances (14.94%). Interlingual, or native language interference, was found to be the primary source of these errors. The main factor of making errors is the lack of previous experience and knowledge about the conventions of academic writing and the expectations of the institution they are studying at. This study offers teaching recommendations for EFL teachers, emphasizing the importance of considering the impact of learners' native language besides providing appropriate grammar instruction as the key to effective teaching for ESL teachers.

Abstract

Figurative language plays a fundamental role in song lyrics as it enables songwriters to convey complex emotions, personal experiences, and deeper meanings beyond literal interpretation. This study aims to identify the types of figurative language found in Henry Moodie's song album Mood Swings and to explain how those figurative expressions are realized within the lyrics. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the lyrics of thirteen songs in the album, obtained from Spotify, and analyzed using Perrine's (1992) theory of figurative language. The findings reveal that five types of figurative language are found in the album, namely metaphor, simile, personification, symbol, and hyperbole, with a total of 40 instances identified. Symbol appears as the most dominant type with 10 instances, followed by hyperbole (9), metaphor (8), personification (7), and simile (6). The analysis demonstrates that each type serves a distinct expressive function in conveying emotional depth and personal experience throughout the lyrics. These findings indicate that figurative language is not merely a stylistic device in Henry Moodie's songwriting but a fundamental means of communicating emotional truth. This study is expected to contribute to the understanding of figurative language in song lyrics and to serve as a reference for students, researchers, and educators in the fields of linguistics and literary studies.

Abstract

This study discusses foregrounding in expressing melancholy and nostalgia in Lana Del Rey’s song lyrics. Although many studies have analyzed figurative language in song lyrics, few have focused on foregrounding as the main analytical framework. This study aims to identify the forms and functions of foregrounding in the songs The Greatest and Happiness Is a Butterfly. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method based on Geoffrey Leech’s (1969) theory of foregrounding. The findings show that foregrounding is realized through semantic deviation and parallelism. Semantic deviation appears through figurative expressions and is more dominant, functioning to construct melancholy, while parallelism appears through repetition and functions to construct nostalgia. In conclusion, this study shows that foregrounding plays an important role in expressing emotional meanings in song lyrics through non-literal and patterned language. This study contributes to stylistic analysis by explaining how linguistic features construct emotional meaning in contemporary song lyrics.
