Abstract

Technological advancements are significantly transforming the landscape of Indonesian education, shifting from traditional methods to digital learning media. This study examines the adoption of Flipbook, a digital tool, in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, aiming to enhance the learning experience for students enrolled in English language study programs. Utilizing Flipbook as an instructional medium, lecturers anticipate offering a novel approach to integrating technology in education. Data were gathered through questionnaires administered to seventy-six students focusing on ESP materials. The questionnaire, comprising thirty-one items with both positive and negative statements, evaluated four key aspects: the completeness of the learning content delivered through Flipbook, student engagement in learning activities, the effectiveness of lecturers in managing the digital learning environment, and the adequacy of facilities and infrastructure supporting the use of Flipbook. The findings demonstrated varying levels of effectiveness: The lecturer's ability to manage Learning was notably effective, with a high mean score of 44.97, indicating that Flipbook facilitates dynamic classroom management. Learning Activities also showed positive outcomes, with a mean score of 36.43, suggesting satisfactory engagement and interactivity. However, Learning Completeness and Facilities and Infrastructure highlighted areas needing improvement, with mean scores of 31.57 and 27.24, respectively. These lower scores reveal significant gaps in content delivery completeness and the supporting infrastructure, which are critical for effectively using digital learning tools.

Abstract

This qualitative research delves into the perspectives of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students regarding the utilization of Animaker as an educational tool for recount text materials. The study involved interviews with three EFL students hailing from an Indonesian private junior high school. The findings of this investigation unveiled six significant advantages associated with using Animaker in the learning process. Firstly, it simplified subject matter comprehension for students. Secondly, it facilitated the retention of lesson details. Thirdly, it contributed to improved classroom performance, ultimately resulting in higher grades. Fourthly, it rendered the learning process enjoyable, fostering a sense of motivation among students. Lastly, it streamlined vocabulary acquisition, making it more accessible. However, despite these advantages, students encountered challenges, particularly in dealing with complex vocabulary found within the recount text materials. To overcome these hurdles, they devised four strategies. These strategies encompassed seeking clarifications from teachers and peers, consulting bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, and deducing word meanings from contextual clues. Furthermore, the research revealed that Animaker effectively enhanced 21st-century literacy skills by combining digital literacy, global literacy, technological literacy, visual literacy, and information literacy. This, in turn, equipped students with valuable skills for thriving in today's technologically advanced society. In conclusion, the study highlighted the overwhelmingly positive perception of EFL students towards the use of Animaker as an educational medium for recount text materials. While students did encounter vocabulary challenges, they were proactive in employing various strategies to overcome these obstacles. This research holds implications for the development of technological resources in English language learning, benefiting both EFL students and educators.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of gamification on English language teaching, focusing on student engagement, motivation, and overall learning experiences. To address a research gap in understanding the specific effects of gamified learning environments in this context, this qualitative research adopts a case study design, employing semi-structured interviews with ten students attending Islamic Senior High Schools. Thematic analysis reveals three main themes: Positive Impact on Engagement and Attitude, Motivation Through Competition, and Effective and Enjoyable Learning Activities. Participants have observed increased class attendance, a boost in their enthusiasm, and positive attitudes toward learning English, attributing these changes to gamification. The findings indicate that gamification not only positively has a beneficial impact on both student engagement and motivation but also enhances the overall learning environment. Implications for educators and policymakers involve the potential integration of gamified strategies to create dynamic, attractive language learning environments. The study provides new insights into the existing body of knowledge on the use of gamification in education, emphasizing the need for future investigation into its long-term effects on language competency and cultural contexts.
