Abstract

This paper presents a techno-economic analysis and environment assessment of hybrid photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and diesel genset (DG) with pumped hydro storage (PHS) for a rural microgrid system. The analysis is carried out for a case study with Mentawai community load demand of 165.44 kWh/day at a peak load of 20.46 kW. The Homer simulation results show that there are eight feasible configurations, which the optimal hybrid system configuration to supply community load is the configuration with PV/DG/PHS. An optimal system has been achieved for the lowest NPC of Indonesian rupiah (IDR) 3,00 B consist of 15 kWp PV modules, 1 unit of PHS and a solar inverter with a size 25 kW. The net present cost and payback period are in accordance with criteria for the economic feasibility analysis method of a project. However, the cost of energy is greater than the electrical utility tariff, but this value can be considered for applications in the remote island area. Therefore, the project still feasible to be implemented. Since the renewable fraction of the system is increased hence this proposed system will have the lowest carbon emission.

Abstract

Hand gesture recognition is a topic that is still investigated by many scientists for numerous useful aspects. This research investigated hand gestures for sign language number zero to nine. The hand gesture recognition was based on finger direction patterns. The finger directions were detected by a Leap Motion Controller. Finger direction pattern modeling was based on two methods: threshold and artificial neural network. Threshold model 1 contained 15 rules based on the range of finger directions on each axis. Threshold model 2 was developed from model 1 based on the behavior of finger movements when the subject performed hand gestures. The ANN model of the system was designed with four neurons at the output layer, 15 neurons at the input layer, seven neurons at the first hidden layer and 5 neurons at the second hidden layer. The artificial neural network used the logsig as the activation function. The result shows that the first threshold model has the lowest accuracy because the rule is too complicated and rigid. The threshold model 2 can improve the threshold model, but it still needs development to reach better accuracy. The ANN model gave the best result among the developed model with 98% accuracy. LMC produces useful biometric data for hand gesture recognition.

Abstract

This paper presents a hybrid photovoltaic (PV)-diesel management system performance analysis considering weather conditions. The system is designed to operate based on charging current, battery capacity, and loading current. During charging current is decreased but the battery capacity is high, and the PV system remains supplied for low and medium loading current. When the charging current is lowered and the battery capacity is in the middle, the PV system still supplies for low loading current. However, when the charging current decreases and the battery voltage decreased below 22.3 volts, the supply instantly switches to the diesel generator. The charge current is calculated by subtracting the PV current from the load current. A real-time clock is implemented as a timer to guarantee that there is no repetitive switching throughout the night when charging from the panel is missing. The system works automatically through microcontroller control during the day for 9 hours. The improvement that has been obtained is to overcome the problem of repeated switching processes by limiting the transfer process back to PV when sunlight is not available.

Abstract

Electric vehicles charging (EVs) must be done optimally to minimize the impact it causes. EVs are being recognized as a potential way to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. However, there are still difficulties in optimizing these systems to minimize operating costs and EVs charging waiting times. This study investigates several industrial, commercial and residential charging stations. The primary objective of this study is to systematically review the existing literature on optimizing EV charging. The collection of data was centered on scholarly articles released between the years 2018 and 2023 from Scopus, IEEE Xplore. This study presents a systematic literature review of optimizing EVs charging. As a result, 43 EVs charging optimization studies were obtained which were investigated and studied further. Identify and analysis the selected studies, there are two research topics and trends most frequently addressed by researchers: scheduling and coordination. The four most applied methods in EVs charging are identified: particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA), linear programming (LP) method, and evolutionary algorithms (EA). Future research directions: develop advanced optimization algorithms, investigating the integration of renewable energy sources into the charging infrastructure, exploring the potential of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services, studying the impact of EVs charging on the power grid and developing strategies, considering the optimization of charging schedules and coordination strategies for large-scale EVs fleets.

Abstract

This article presents the design and implementation of an internet of things (IoT)-based weather forecasting system aimed at optimizing operational planning for renewable energy generation. The system leverages a Raspberry Pi as its central controller, integrating pyranometer and anemometer sensors for real-time data collection and predictive analytics. Utilizing the double moving average method, the system provides accurate short-term forecasts of solar and wind power outputs, which are crucial for addressing the intermittency challenges of renewable energy sources. The integration with the Blynk platform ensures user-friendly data visualization and accessibility. Results from a three-day testing phase reveal the system's high accuracy, with prediction errors of 8.79% for solar power and 16.49% for wind power. These findings underscore the system's potential to enhance energy planning, improve efficiency, and support sustainability goals. By enabling data-driven decision-making, this IoT-based forecasting system offers a scalable solution for advancing renewable energy integration into the power grid.
