Abstract

AbstractThis research was aimed to know how Information Gap Activities improved students? speaking in asking and giving information on the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Adisucipto in Academic Year 2016/2017. The research was conducted using Classroom Action Research in three cycles. The research participants were the English teacher and 14 students of the Seventh Grade. The data were collected through field notes, students? speaking performance, and teacher?s interview. The results showed that students? speaking skills in asking for and giving information improved from cycle 1 to cycle 3. Students? vocabulary improved through preparation of information gap, dividing students into two groups, and forming pairs to find required information supported by other strategies such as using pictures, using a shopping catalogue, sorting information from text, and using grid. Students? ability in asking questions of specific information improved through preparation of Information Gap Activities and forming pairs to find required information supported by other strategies such as introducing questions-answers together and using grid. Meanwhile, students? activeness improved through all of the steps in Information Gap Activities. Forming pairs to find required information gave the students chances to practice their speaking skill in asking and giving Information which improved students? willingness to speak and reduces students? shyness.Keywords:     Information gap activities, asking for and giving information, speaking.

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted on the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak in academic year 2016/2017. The research was conducted to improve students’ speaking ability in giving arguments. The method of this research was classroom action research. The tools of data collecting were observation sheet and field note. This research was done in three cycles. The result of data analysis showed that the students’ speaking ability were improved. “I SOLVE” technique could reduce students’ pauses and hesitation, improved students’ appropriate use of words to express opinion, improved students’ correct use of present tense or future tense, and improved students’ interaction in argumentative speaking. Those improvements also supported by the students’ speaking ability rate. In the first cycle their average score was 45.4, 71.5 in the second cycle, and improved to 83.6 in the third cycle. Thus, it can be concluded that “I SOLVE” technique did improve students’ speaking ability in giving arguments. Teachers could use “I SOLVE” technique as an alternative technique in teaching speaking. However, they should manage the time carefully so that they will have enough time to evaluate and give feedback to the students’ speaking. Keywords: Students’ Speaking Ability, Argumentative Speaking, “I SOLVE” Technique

Abstract

Abstract: This research discussed the use of planted question technique to improve students’ speaking participation in asking question. This research was conducted to the eighth grade B students of MTs Negeri 1 MempawahHilir. There were thirty six students.The method used was the classroom action research. The findings showed that the percentage of students’ speaking participation in asking question in the first cycle was 16.6% (poor). It kept going up to the level of 38.8% (poor) in the second cycle, and in the third cycle, the students’ percentage of students’ speaking participation in asking question was improving to the level of 63.8% (average to good). The field note that was fulfilled by the collaborator also showed the same result. The students’ participation showed the improvement from cycle to cycle. They were able to erase their shyness and asked question by using English. All of the goals in teaching and learning process have been fulfilled in the third cycle. Through this research, the students’ speaking participation in asking question was improved in the number of students who was participating in asking question. Keywords : Participation, Asking, Planted Question Technique Abstrak: Penelitian ini menjelaskan penggunaan tehnik pertanyaan yang ditanamkan untuk meningkatkan partisipasi bertanya siswa dalam mengajukan pertanyaan. Penelitian ini dilakukan kepada siswa kelas 8B MTs Negeri 1 Mempawah Hilir yang berjumalah 36 siswa. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persentase partisipasi bertanya siswa dalam mengajukan pertanyaan pada sikluspertamaadalah 16.6% (rendah).Kemudian persentase tersebut naik ke angka 38.8% (rendah) pada siklu skedua. Dan pada siklus ketiga, persentase partisipasi bertanya siswa dalam mengajukan pertanyaan meningkat ke angka 63.8% (rata-rata menuju baik). Catatan lapangan yang ditulis oleh kolaborator juga menunjukkan hasil yang sama. Partisipasi  siswa menunjukkan peningkatan pada setiap siklus, sehingga mereka bias menghilangkan rasa malu mereka untuk bertanya menggunakan Bahasa Inggris. Seluruh target dalam proses belajar mengajar sudah terpenuhi pada siklus ketiga. Melalui penelitian ini, partisipasi bertanya siswa dalam mengajukan pertanyaan meningkat dalam hal jumlah siswa yang berpartisipasimengajukanpertanyaan. Abstract

 AbstractThis research aimed to investigate how Dictogloss improved students? listening comprehension on fairy tale at tenth grade students of SMA Islamiyah Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. The research was Classroom Action Research. The research subject was tenth grade students in class XA. The writer used field note, observation checklist, and listening test as tools of collecting data. The data analysis showed the students? listening comprehension in discriminating sound of past tense action verbs improved through preparation stage of Dictogloss. The students? listening comprehension in finding specific information of fairy tale improved through dictation stage of Dictogloss. In addition, the students? listening comprehension in finding main idea improved through reconstruction stage of Dictogloss. The students? concentration in listening comprehension of fairy tale were improved through reconstruction stage of Dictogloss. Dictogloss could improve students? listening comprehension and concentration in discriminating sound of past tense action verbs, finding specific information and main idea of fairy tale. Keywords: Fairy Tale, Dictogloss, Listening Comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract: The research purpose was to improve students’ writing skill on personal recount text through peer assessment on the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak in academic year 2016/2017. The research subjects were the English teacher and 40 students of X MIA 2 class. The data were collected through field note, observation checklist, students’ and teacher’s interview, and students’ writing on personal recount text. The findings showed several improvements. First, the students’ were able to identify and assess their peer’s writing by giving comment and suggestion through peer assessment sheet as the guidance. Second, the students’ interactions between themselves were improved since they need to clarify the suggestions and comments to revise their writing. Third, the improvement of the students’ writing on personal recount text was proven by the increase of the mean score in each cycle. In the first cycle, the mean score was 72.5, in the second cycle the mean score was 81.85 and in the third cycle the mean score was 86.62. Since the mean score of each cycle increased, therefore this research showed peer assessment improved students’ writing skill on personal recount text. Keywords  : Peer Assessment, Writing Skill, Personal Recount Text Abstrak : Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks personal recount melalui penilaian sejawat terhadap siswa kelas X SMA 1 Muhammdiyah 1 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2016/2017. Metode penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas. Subjek penelitian ini adalah guru bahasa inggris dan 40 siswa kelas X MIA 2. Pengumpulan data menggunakan catatan lapangan, observasi, interviu, dan tulisan teks personal recount siswa. Temuan penelitian menunjukan beberapa peningkatan. Pertama, siswa dapat mengidentifikasi dan menilai tulisan teman sejawat dengan memberikan komentar dan saran melalui lembar penilaian sejawat sebagai pedoman. Kedua, interaksi sesama siswa meningkat karena mereka perlu untuk mengkalifikasi saran dan komentar untuk memperbaiki tulisan mereka. Ketiga, peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa dibuktikan oleh kenaikan nilai rata-rata siswa ditiap siklus. Pada siklus pertama, nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh adalah 72,5, kemudian mencapai 81.85 disikus kedua, dan meningkat menjadi 86.62 disiklus ketiga. Oleh karena nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penelitian ini menunjukkan penilaian sejawat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa terhadap teks personal recount. Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted to improve descriptive text writing of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 17 and their use of noun phrases, simple present tense, and sentences writing in descriptive text by using personal photographs. The research was conducted in form of classroom action research. Subject of the research was seventh grade students of VII B class of SMP Negeri 17 Pontianak of academic year 2016/2017. In this research, the students made improvement during teaching and learning process as well as in writing descriptive text by using personal photographs. The students could also improve their use of noun phrases and simple present tense as well as their sentences writing in descriptive text by using personal photographs. After that, the students enjoyed and were happy in using personal photographs in their learning process as well as in writing descriptive text. Therefore, it indicated that personal photographs improved descriptive text writing of seventh grade students of VIIB of SMP Negeri 17.      Keywords: personal photographs, writing, descriptive text.

Abstract

 AbstractThe aim of this research was to know how retelling stories by using picture series improved students? speaking skill at the tenth grade students in Class X IPA 1 of SMAN 5 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. The research was conducted through Classroom Action Research in three cycles. The subjects of this research were the tenth grade English teacher and 36 students in class X IPA 1. The researcher used observation checklist, field note and speaking performance test as tools to collect the data. The result showed that presenting the materials and modelling retelling stories by using picture series improved students? ability in using appropriate vocabulary, in using correct simple past tense and in using correct pronunciation. Modelling retelling stories by using picture series improved students? ability in reducing pauses and hesitation as they learnt the model to speak fluently. Moreover, presenting the materials, presenting the picture series and modelling retelling stories by using picture series improved students? activeness, students? confidence, students? enthusiasm, and students? interest. Abstract

  Abstract: The purpose of this research was to investigate how Three Step Interview enhanced students’ speaking of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sambas in academic year 2015/ 2016. The method used was Classroom Action Research. The participants of this research were the tenth grade English teacher and 36 students in class XD. The writer used observation, speaking performance, and interview to collect the data. The result showed that students could deliver the descriptions with good accuracy and fluency. Presenting the Materials, Modelling Three Step Interview, Interview in Pairs, Reversing Roles, and Sharing in Teams enhanced students’ pronunciation, correct use of present tense, and appropriate use of vocabulary. Modelling Three Step Interview, Interview in Pairs, Reversing Roles, and Sharing in Teams enhance students’ fluency to speak with less pauses and hesitation. Students’ mean score in cycle 1 was 60.88, it increased to 72.91 in cycle 2, and it increased to 79.85 in cycle 3. In conclusion, Three Step Interview enhanced students’ speaking of descriptive text. Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana Three Step Interview meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara teks deskriptif pada siswa kelas X SMA Negeri 1 Sambas pada tahun akademik 2015/ 2016. Metode yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas. Peserta penelitian ini adalah guru bahasa Inggris kelas X dan 36 siswa di kelas XD. Penulis menggunakan observasi, penampilan berbicara, dan wawancara untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa dapat menyampaikan deskripsi dengan katepatan dan kelancaran yang baik. Penyajian Materi, Pemodelan Three Step Interview, Wawancara Berpasangan, Bertukar Peran, dan Berbagi di Tim meningkatkan pengucapan siswa, penggunaan present tense dengan benar, dan penggunaan kosakata dengan tepat. Pemodelan Three Step Interview, Wawancara berpasangan, Bertukar Peran, dan Berbagi di Tim meningkatkan kelancaran siswa untuk berbicara dengan kurangnya jeda dan ragu-ragu. Skor rata-rata siswa pada siklus 1 adalah 60,88, meningkat menjadi 72,91 pada siklus 2, dan meningkat menjadi 79,85 pada siklus 3. Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted based on the problems found from observation on teaching and learning process. This research aimed to investigate how Wordless Picture Book improved students’ writing skill on recount text to the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Sungai Ambawang in academic year 2017/2018. This research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research and the subject was the eighth grade students in class VIII D. In collecting the data, the writer used observation checklist table, field note and writing test. The result showed that students’ problems in writing recount text such as organization of the text, using simple past tense and students’ interest in writing recount text had been solved by using Wordless Picture Book as the teaching medium. The students’ ability to organize the text improved through the chronological pictures, students’ ability in using simple past tense improved through events within pictures and students’ interest in writing recount text improved through cartoon pictures within Wordless Picture Book. It can be concluded that Wordless Picture Book can be used as a medium to improve students’ writing skill on recount text such as organization of the text, using simple past tense sentence and students’ interest in learning writing recount text. Keywords: Wordless Picture Book, Recount Text, Writing Skill.

Abstract

Abstract: This study was a classroom action research (CAR) to improve students’ writing ability on analytical exposition text in senior high school students. In this study, constructivism was implemented as a strategy to help student in writing analytical exposition. Constructivism consists of orientation, elicitation, restructuring idea, application of idea and review. The techniques of data collecting in this research were observation and written test. Data was analyzed by using scoring profile. The students’ writing ability in analytical exposition text improved in two cycles from 75.55 in cycle 1 then improved to 82.40 in cycle two. The improvements of this study were particularly in students’ writing on generic structure, and mechanics. Keywords: writing, analytical exposition text, constructivism.   Abstrak: Penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas (CAR) yang bertujuan unuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis sebuah teks analytical exposition pada siswa sekolah menengah atas. Dalam penelitian ini, constuctivism diimplementasikan sebagai sebuah strategi untuk membantu siswa dalam menulis teks analytical exposition. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan meliputi observasi dan tes tertulis. Hasil data penelitian dianalisi menggunakan rubrik penilaian. Kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks analytical exposition mengalami peningkatan dalam pada dua siklus dari 75.55 pada siklus pertama kemudian meningkat menjadi 82.40 pada siklus kedua. Peningkatan yang dialami siswa pada penelitian ini umumnya terjadi pada penulisan struktur generik dan mekanisme penulisan teks analytical exposition.
