Abstract

Abstract. Aulia R, Kaswanto, Arifin HS, Mosyaftiani A, Syasita N, Wahyu A, Wiyoga H. 2023. Assessing the benefits and management of urban forest in supporting low carbon city in Jakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 6151-6159. Climate change is a phenomenon that has become a global concern including in urban areas. Jakarta is one of the most populated cities in Indonesia, reaching 10.56 million people in 2020 with high emissions levels due to high human activities. Thus, efforts to reduce carbon emissions to mitigate climate change are necessary in Jakarta one of which is through the concept of low carbon city and manifested in the establishment of Green Open Space (GOS), including urban forests. Urban forests aim to sequester and store carbon, and improve the urban microclimate. This research aimed to assess the benefits of urban forests in Jakarta in term of their capacity in carbon sequestration using i-Tree Eco tool, and analyse the management of urban forests related to the applicable regulations. To collect data on trees, this study created 49 plots scattered across Srengseng Urban Forest, Cipayung Urban Forest, Munjul Urban Forest, Rawa Malang Urban Forest, and Pondok Labu Urban Forest. Tree species, Diameter at Breast Height (DBH), total tree height, live tree height, crown base height, crown width, percent crown loss, and crown light exposure were all gathered. Furthermore, in-depth interviews with urban forest managers were performed to gather additional information on present management, including questions derived from Jakarta's green open space legislation to assess management efficacy. The results of the analysis of urban forest quality show that the health status of trees is one of the factors that indicate the quality of urban forests at the five study sites, with more than 50% of the total trees in fair condition (75- 90% health). The gross carbon sequestration of trees in five urban forests Jakarta is about 184.8 metric tons of carbon per year. Additionally, the in-depth interviews also test the mortality of the urban forest, a decent indicator of current management with estimates over the next 10 years, showing a slight increase in carbon sequestration and storage capacity. However, the mortality scenario leads to a trend toward a decrease in leaf area and the number of tree categories, especially in the Srengseng Urban Forest.

Abstract

Abstract. Budiadi, Irwan SNR, Lestari LD, Madjid MIN, Arifin HS, Nurhayati, Kaswanto, Faisal B, Dahlan MZ, Nadhiroh SR, Wahyuni TS, Ali MS. 2025. Biodiversity, social adoptability, and preference toward managing medicinal plants in homegardens across elevations in the Menoreh Mountains, Kulonprogo District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 1316-1324. Pekarangan, or "homegarden" is an agroforestry system that provides various products, including low-cost medicinal plants for maintaining family and community health. The Menoreh Mountains in Yogyakarta province, Central Java, is a center of production for medicinal plants that have been utilized by local people for generations. This research was conducted at three elevation levels—100-200 masl (lowland), 400-500 masl (mid-elevation), and >800 masl (highland)—in the Menoreh Mountains, to measure the biodiversity of homegardens, to predict adoption level of and people's preference toward medicinal plants, and to discuss pharmacological activity of the plants against potential epidemics. It involved direct observation of 30 homegardens, and interviews with 45 respondents using 22 close-ended questions from the ADOPT Tool framework.  Diversity indices among locations were compared using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post-hoc test, and results from the interviews were analyzed using the ADOPT Tool. The pharmacological activities of the medicinal plants were analyzed through a literature study. The results showed that plant species in the homegardens had five main functions, i.e., food-producing, medicinal, fodder, estate crops, and ornamental plants. A total of 22 species from 13 families of medicinal plants deeply rooted in the local culture were cultivated in the homegardens. Peak adoption of medicinal-plant management in lowland, mid-elevation, and highland communities was predicted at 17%, 98%, and 98% within a period of ten, five, and two years, respectively. Highland people can more easily adopt the cultivation system of medicinal plants than mid-elevation and lowland communities. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) were the two most preferred medicinal plants in all locations, that increase immunity via antiviral, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. This suggests people in the Menoreh Mountains have good resilience to potential epidemics. Still, future research to increase the diversity and characterization of specific compounds of medicinal plants is needed.

Abstract

Abstract. Kanara N, Arifin HS, Zuhud EAM, Noorochmat BP. 2025. Plant diversity of ceremonial foods used by Minangkabau ethnic group in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 6352-6366. Ethnic communities generally possess Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) in managing natural resources and the environment as well as traditonal ceremonies and foods. This study is the first that comprehensively document plant diversity for ceremonial foods by Minangkabau communities in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The objectives are to: (i) identify the ceremonial food plants, (ii) analyze the cultural food significance of ceremonial food plant species, and (iii) analyze the important local agroforestry system to conserve the ceremonial food plants used by the Minangkabau ethnic group. Data collection was performed using purposive sampling and ethnobotanical approaches. The information was obtained through semi-structured interviews with 104 informants in Lima Puluh Kota District and Payakumbuh Municipality, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Valuation of the key plant species was obtained using the Cultural Food Significance Index (CFSI) method. The data show that Minangkabau ethnic group use 86 taxa from 38 families as ceremonial foods with the dominance family is Solanaceae. Total 30 taxa from 13 family were considered to have a very high-CFSI with the dominance families are Fabaceae and Zingiberaceae. Plants often used in ceremonies by the Minangkabau ethnic group are mostly gathered in the mixed garden and homegarden, showing that local agroforestry systems are the most potential landscape in conserving ceremonial food plants. Maintain local agroforestry systems and preserve socio-cultural practices in Minangkabau ethnic group have implication for the conservation of local food plants and enhance local food security.

Abstract

Ciliwung River flows from Bogor district, Bogor city, Depok, to Jakarta. The river faces many problems, especially settlement occupation on its riparian zones. The problem has damaged its natural ecological structures and the agroforestry practices such as mixed gardens, forest gardens, and pekarangan (home garden) in riparian landscape. This research objective is to analyze the structure, function, and dynamics of riparian agroforestry landscape of Ciliwung River in Bogor City. The landscape ecological index analysis approach is used to quantify the structure, function, and dynamics of the landscape. The existing land use in Ciliwung riparian in Bogor City has been dominated by the constructed land, such as settlements and housing. Those land use can be found with an area of 33.78 ha (60.50%) in the upper segment and 34.65 ha (56.54%) in the under segment. Meanwhile, in the middle segment is still dominated by the agroforestry area, such as forest gardens, mixed garden, and pekarangan with an area of 17.59 ha (55.23%). The function of these structures is as the core habitat and movement media of material, energy, animal, and human. The spatial dynamics of the Ciliwung riparian landscape in Bogor City revealed that the more patches of settlements and housing on a landscape, the more patches of pekarangan on the landscape. Keywords: Agroforestry landscape, Ciliwung River, landscape ecology, riparian areas

Abstract

Prioritizing the comfort and safety of pedestrian paths can increase pedestrian volume, reduce dependence on motorized vehicles, and contribute to sustainable urban development. However, pedestrian-oriented transportation planning is often overlooked. This study evaluates the landscape of pedestrian walkways along Jalan Raya Pajajaran a national road with high levels of human activity and Jalan Sudirman the oldest road in Bogor. The evaluation focuses on walkway typologies, which are then assessed for compliance with the design requirements stated in the Regulation of the Minister of Public Works that concern guidelines for the planning, provision, and utilization of pedestrian infrastructure and facilities, based on land use categories. The research method employed is descriptive analysis, with data obtained through field surveys and literature studies. The research findings reveal fifteen distinct typologies of pedestrian pathways, each characterized by varying widths and surface materials. The physical comfort condition of pedestrian paths in Bogor City predominantly falls into the moderate quality category. The analysis highlights safety and the availability of shading facilities as two critical issues requiring immediate attention. Pedestrian pathways in Bogor are positioned in a strategic yet vulnerable spot. This indicates that the pedestrian infrastructure falls under the “Grow & Build Strategy” category.
