Abstract

This research aims to investigate the perceptions of first-semester students in the English Education Department at the University of HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar (UHKBPNP) regarding the use of the VOA English Learning YouTube channel as a tool for improving speaking skills, as well as to identify the benefits that students gain from its use. A qualitative descriptive approach was adopted for this study, with questionnaires serving as the primary instrument for data collection. The study population consisted of 38 first-semester students from the PIA1 class in the English Education Department at UHKBPNP. The findings indicated that students held a favorable view of the VOA English Learning YouTube channel as a medium for learning speaking skills. The respondents' positive feedback was based on their personal learning experiences with the channel. They reported that the channel had a beneficial impact on their speaking practice after engaging with the content from the VOA English Learning YouTube channel. Students found the channel both interesting and effective for learning speaking skills. Additionally, the research highlighted several benefits, including an increase in vocabulary and a reduction in the fear of pronouncing words.

Abstract

This research was intended to find out the types of error in using adjective in writing descriptive text made by the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 BANDAR. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 BANDAR. This research was used quantitative approach and content analysis was employed as the research methodology. The total participants of this research were thirty-three students taken from eight grade of SMPN 1 BANDAR by using purposive sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher used a descriptive writing test. The errors were collected, identified and classified based on Dulay’s (1982) Surface Strategy Taxonomy (SST) which consisted of four types of error namely omission, addition, misformation, and misodering. The results showed that there were four types of errors made by students in descriptive writing, there were: 1) omission (25,80%), 2) addition (22,58%), 3) misformation (25,80) and 4) misordering (25,80%). This research indicated that misformation was the highest error made by students.

Abstract

In today’s globalized world, English has become an essential tool in various academic and professional fields, including economics. This study explores the perceptions of economics students at the University of HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar (UHKBPNP) regarding the role and importance of English in their education and future careers. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study focuses on students’ experiences, challenges, and attitudes toward English language learning within the context of their economics studies. A total of 44 students of Economics Education Department participated in this case study, with data collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate that the majority of students recognize the critical role of English in understanding economic concepts, accessing academic resources, and participating in discussions. Students also acknowledge the significance of English proficiency for career development, particularly for job opportunities in multinational companies and international organizations. However, many students face challenges in mastering technical economic vocabulary, reading English textbooks, writing academic reports, and comprehending English lectures. The findings highlight a strong demand for more specialized English courses, such as Business English or English for Specific Purposes (ESP), to better prepare students for the linguistic demands of the global economic sector. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the need for enhanced English language instruction tailored to the specific needs of Economics Education Department students at UHKBPNP. Incorporating practical and specialized English courses into the curriculum will enable students to achieve academic success and excel in their future careers in a globalized marketplace.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh Teknik Repetition Drill terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa khususnya dalam intonasi kelas sepuluh SMA Swasta YP HKBP 1 Pematangsiantar. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan eksperimen yang melibatkan 77 siswa sebagai subjek penelitian. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan tes lisan dengan 5 kalimat kalimat perintah dan 5 kalimat kalimat tanya baik pada pre-test maupun post-test. Nilai rata-rata pre-test siswa di kelas kontrol adalah 62,45 dan nilai post-test di kelas kontrol adalah 80,45. Sedangkan nilai rata-rata pre-test siswa pada kelas eksperimen adalah 52,8 dan post-test adalah 81,65. Artinya, nilai post-test lebih tinggi dibandingkan nilai pre-test. Dan hasil penelitian ini Thitung < Ttabel dan ha diterima dan h0 ditolak. Jadi, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh positif dan signifikan teknik latihan pengulangan terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa khususnya dalam intonasi di kelas sepuluh SMA Swasta YP HKBP 1 Pematangsiantar.

Abstract

This research investigates the perspectives of English Education Department students at the University of HKBP Nommensen regarding cover letter writing within the English Correspondence course. Recognizing the importance of cover letters in professional communication and career development, the study aims to assess students' understanding, challenges, and confidence in mastering this skill. Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, data were collected from 25 students through questionnaires and from 10 students through semi-structured interviews. Key findings reveal that while students acknowledge the relevance of cover letter writing to their future careers, they face challenges in organizing content, maintaining professionalism, and tailoring letters to specific job requirements. The research highlights the effectiveness of course materials but identifies a need for more interactive and practical teaching methods, such as workshops, peer reviews, and real-world applications. The findings offer actionable recommendations to enhance the teaching and learning process, ensuring students are better prepared for professional communication and the competitive job market.

Abstract

With the coronavirus, the activities of the community have been disrupted. So that it has an impact on the Indonesian people, especially in the world of education. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, learning in Indonesia has been held online. The purpose of carrying out teaching activities at simarhompa 177041 elementary schools is to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of third-grade elementary school students by utilizing the independent campus program with campus teaching by students. This campus teaching activity is carried out from August 9, 2021, to December 17, 2021. The schedule of activities includes assignments, the deployment of campus teaching participants, the teaching process, mentoring with field lecturers student withdrawals, and closings. After the implementation of campus teaching was completed, this program proved to be very beneficial for students and schools. Both as they study and as they program with other students, students gain a wealth of practical experience in the field. Placement schools, on the other hand, recognize that the presence of students on site is very helpful for them in terms of teaching programs, assisting with technology adaptation, and assisting school administration and teachers.

Abstract

Batak Toba adalah salah satu budaya etnis patriarki di Indonesia, dengan standar gender yang ketat diterapkan di kalangan masyarakatnya. Nenek moyang orang Indonesia Batak Toba-Amerika yang hidup di bawah norma gender Batak dan Egalitarian mungkin mempunyai sudut pandang berbeda mengenai standar gender etnis mereka akibat integrasi di Amerika. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh asimilasi terhadap persepsi nenek moyang campuran Batak Toba-Amerika terhadap norma gender etnis Batak Toba. Penelitian ini merupakan salah satu contoh etnografi digital. Untuk memecahkan masalah penelitian, penelitian ini menggunakan asimilasi tersegmentasi Portes dan Zhou. Akibatnya, asimilasi mempengaruhi perspektif campuran nenek moyang orang Batak Toba-Amerika terhadap norma gender Batak, menyebabkan mereka lebih menyesuaikan diri dengan norma gender Egalitarian Amerika dan struktur keluarga Egalitarian Amerika sebagai akibat dari sumber daya manusia.
