Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the scaffolding strategy on reading comprehension of procedural texts among seventh-grade students at SMP N 12 Pematangsiantar. The scaffolding strategy was used to provide gradual support to students in understanding more complex texts. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with two groups: the experimental group taught using the scaffolding strategy and the control group taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments. The analysis showed a significant improvement in the experimental class's reading comprehension scores after the treatment. The average pre-test score for the experimental class was 41.8, which increased to 60.9 after the treatment. In contrast, the control class only showed a slight improvement, from 43.1 to 48.5. The t-test result was 11.929, which is higher than the t-table value of 1.670, indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. This study concludes that the scaffolding strategy is effective in improving students' reading comprehension, especially in procedural texts.

Abstract

Language plays a crucial role in shaping political discourse, especially through the use of specific grammatical structures such as nouns. This study analyzes the types and functions of nouns used in President Prabowo Subianto’s speech delivered on May 1, 2025, during the Labor Day rally in Jakarta. The speech focuses on the government's plan to reclaim state assets from private control, presenting a message embedded with nationalistic and constitutional themes. Using a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, the study classifies nouns in the speech into eight categories: common, proper, concrete, abstract, countable, uncountable, collective, and compound nouns. Data were collected from a published version of the speech on The Jakarta Post website and analyzed sentence by sentence to identify each noun and its type. The results revealed a total of 188 nouns across 15 core sentences. Common nouns were the most frequently used (34.6%), followed by countable nouns (24.0%) and proper nouns (16.0%). The presence of abstract nouns (14.9%) and compound nouns (10.6%) highlighted the ideological and policy-oriented content of the speech. These findings suggest that President Prabowo’s noun choices were intentional and strategically used to legitimize political actions, construct national identity, and appeal to public sentiment. This study contributes to the field of applied linguistics, particularly in political discourse analysis, by demonstrating how linguistic forms especially nouns serve as tools of persuasion, authority, and ideology in political communication.

Abstract

This study investigates the difficulties faced by seventh-grade students in writing descriptive texts at SMP Negeri 2 Pematangsiantar. Writing, as a productive language skill, requires mastery of various components including content development, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. However, many students still struggle to express ideas effectively in written English. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, this study focused on analyzing students’ writing performance using Jacobs et al.’s (1981) analytical scoring rubric. Data were collected through a descriptive writing test given to 90 students from three different academic ability levels. Each writing sample was assessed based on five writing components. The findings revealed that the most frequent difficulties occurred in mechanics, with 511 total cases, followed by language use with 238 difficulties. Errors in vocabulary (53), organization (41), and content (1) were considerably fewer, indicating that while students generally understood the descriptive writing format, their ability to apply proper grammar and writing conventions remained limited. The results suggest that the students’ struggles were not primarily due to a lack of ideas, but rather insufficient control over the technical aspects of writing. This study highlights the importance of targeted instructional strategies in grammar and mechanics to support students’ writing development. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate explicit writing practice and feedback into the classroom to improve students’ overall proficiency in descriptive text writing.
