Abstract

EFL Students’ needs for spoken English are considered important to fulfill, and the idea to capture what they need requires some ways and efforts so as to make them eager and keen on practicing English better. However, an analysis on needs environment is not much discussed and conducted for EFL students, mainly in lower secondary schools. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine the needs of EFL students in terms of enhancing their English-speaking skills in lower secondary schools. Three ninth-grade students from three distinct lower secondary schools located in Depok, West Java, Indonesia were the subjects of the research. This study employed a qualitative design with descriptive analysis, and the instrument used to collect the data was semi-structured interviews. The resulting data was analyzed with some steps such as reduction of data, data display, and data presentation. The results demonstrated that EFL students’ English-speaking proficiency is influenced by a variety of needs, including necessities, lacks, and wants. Abstract

Team-based project (TBP) has been implemented in some universities to encourage students to be creative and motivated to develop some projects. However, not all EFL teachers in higher education can effectively apply TBP in generating the projects, including English instructional tools for young learners developed by EFL pre-service teachers. This study examines the EFL pre-service teachers' perspectives on using TBP in the contexts of how English lesson plans are developed, their creativity, motivations, and learning opportunities in the primary school teacher education program (PSTEP). The participants of this study are EFL pre-service teachers of PSTEP in one of the reputable private universities in Jakarta, Indonesia, who attended an English Learning in Primary Schools course in the second semester. This study uses a mixed methods design for collecting data from the survey and data from interviews. The results showed that EFL pre-service teachers had positive perceptions of using TBP in developing English lesson plans. The results also demonstrated that EFL pre-service teachers’ creativity, motivation, and learning opportunities, qualitatively increased. Thus, this study recommends that EFL pre-service teachers continually work in groups to discuss and share their critical ideas with their teammates to produce English lesson plans as projects.

Abstract

Classroom presentation is an essential aspect of EFL students' speaking skills, as it involves actively conveying and expressing ideas in front of an audience. However, this activity often causes anxiety that can hinder students' performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the various factors that might contribute to the anxiety experienced by EFL students during classroom presentations, as well as identify coping strategies that can help them address their anxiety and enhance their speaking skills. In this study, mixed methods were used by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to obtain a more in-depth understanding of students' anxiety and the efforts that can be carried out to reduce its impact on speaking performance. The results showed that most students experienced medium level of learning anxiety, while their speaking ability was quite good. However, the relationship between anxiety and presentation skills in English did not show a strong enough correlation. Qualitatively, anxiety affects cognitive impairment, fluency and cohesiveness in speaking, as well as students' confidence level. In addition, the results of this study also highlighted some effective strategies that can be implemented to effectively manage anxiety, such as applying breathing techniques, practicing regularly, and speaking at a slow tempo. Therefore, students are advised to make a more thorough preparation before making an English presentation in class to increase their confidence and speaking fluency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program is implemented in Higher Education. The learning process in Indonesia is currently no longer limited to the classroom or formal academic environment. The acquisition of knowledge and skills obtained for the community can be through work experience, training, and non-formal activities. The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program is designed to recognize and validate knowledge and skills obtained outside of formal education, by providing academic credits equivalent to the results of learning in the classroom. RPL serves as an important bridge for students to utilize their experiences and accelerate the completion of studies in higher education. This research method is descriptive-quantitative with 73 students as research subjects. The results showed that this RPL program received a positive response and became the choice of students in continuing their studies. Regarding the stages of the RPL program learning activities, 66.7% of newly registered students strongly agreed and 33.3% agreed that the learning activities encouraged students' curiosity because the material studied was linear with their field of work. Regarding the benefits of the RPL program, 84.2% of RPL students strongly agreed and 15.8% agreed that during the RPL program they gained a lot of new experiences and knowledge that could be implemented in their work. This RPL program contributes to workers to gain access to education, improve competency, obtain a bachelor's degree and support career plans. Thus, the implementation of RPL must be guaranteed in quality so that graduates have standardized graduate achievement quality
