Abstract

Introduction: The presence of Escherichia coli strains in freshwater fish like catfish (Clarias gariepinus) populations has caused contamination, particularly in Indonesian aquaculture areas where domestic garbage is the primary source of contamination. In order to determine the appropriate handling of E. coli and fecal Coliform contamination before and after harvesting, this study examined the effects of treatment on safety measures for consumption. Methods: Between March and November 2022, a posttest-only control design was used in 126 catfish samples from Bumiayu, Central Java for an experimental study that was quasi-quantitative. There were two types of feed used during growth, followed by six treatments post-harvest (washing; soaking; fry; grill). The MPN method was employed in microbiology testing. Results and Discussion: There was no significant difference in microbial load variation before harvesting the food, with a pre-harvest feed variation of p > 0.05 (indicating that environmental contamination may have been more important). Thermal treatments that completely eradicated E. coli and fecal coliforms (0 MPN/g) by cooking at high temperature for 4-6 minutes and grilling for 5-7 minutes, were the only alternative to post-harvest treatment. Washing and soaking alone remained ineffective. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that high-temperature processing is a reliable method to ensure microbiological safety of catfish, whereas feed variation before harvest has minimal influence under environmentally contaminated conditions. The findings provide practical guidance on safe cooking time–temperature combinations to prevent E. coli exposure from aquaculture products.

Abstract

The prevalence rate in Semarang City has not yet reached the global SDG 2025 target of a 25% reduction (WHO, 2023). Hypertension is often referred to as a “silent killer” because its early symptoms are rarely noticeable, leading many individuals to be unaware of their condition until complications such as gastritis and duodenitis occur. This study aims to analyze the epidemiological patterns of hypertension and gastritis and duodenitis, as well as the association between these conditions and hypertension incidence. This quantitative research uses a nested case-control design with SIMPUS data from Semarang City from 2020–2022, involving 220,093 patients, consisting of 21,639 cases and 198,032 controls. The dependent variable was hypertension, while gastritis and duodenitis served as independent variables. Univariate and bivariate (chi-square) analyses were performed. The results show that hypertension was more common in women (27,709 patients) and highest in the 50–59 age group, while gastritis and duodenitis were also more frequent in women (25,042 patients), peaking in the 20–29 age group. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between gastritis and duodenitis and hypertension. Among males, the highest risk occurred in the 70–79 age group, with an OR of 2.76 (95% CI: 2.62–2.89), while among females, the highest risk was observed in the 80–89 age group, with an OR of 3.32 (95% CI: 3.08–3.57). The Semarang City Health Office is recommended to strengthen hypertension prevention by prioritizing early screening for gastritis and duodenitis in high-risk older adults.

Abstract

Hypertension is a leading global health problem and a major cause of cardiovascular and renal complications. In low- and middle-income countries, including Timor-Leste, its prevalence continues to rise despite ongoing prevention programs. This study examines the factors influencing hypertension in Lautem Madya City, Timor-Leste, focusing on behavioral, cultural, and socio-demographic determinants. This study uses a qualitative approach with a cross-sectional was applied using data from the Lautem Health Office. Associations between lifestyle behaviors, cultural practices, and structural barriers with hypertension prevalence were analyzed. Using a cross-sectional analytic design and Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS), 340 adult respondents (170 with hypertension and 170 without) were surveyed between January and April 2025. Data were analyzed revealed that age, gender, family history, education, diet (high salt and meat intake), smoking, alcohol consumption, limited healthcare access, and poor family support were significantly associated with hypertension (p < 0.05). Cultural practices emerged as a central factor, directly increasing hypertension risk and mediating the effects of lifestyle behaviors such as diet, smoking, and alcohol use. These findings indicate that hypertension prevention in Lautem Municipality requires culturally tailored and family-centered interventions supported by improved primary healthcare systems. This study contributes empirical evidence on the interaction of lifestyle, social, and cultural determinants of hypertension in a low- and middle-income country context.
