Abstract

This research aimed to present a unique approach by integrating the Tordauk jerpara tel tradition of the Aru community into formal mathematics learning, describing the relationship between local cultural practices and mathematics concepts. The objectives were to identify the mathematics values contained in tradition and design a strategy for integrating the values into the elementary school curriculum to improve conceptual understanding and global mathematics literacy. A qualitative approach with an ethnomathematics design was adopted, additionally 20 third-grade elementary school students in Aru Regency were selected as participants. Data were collected through observation, role playing, interviews, and document analysis. The results showed the Tordauk jerpara tel tradition contained the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, ratios, averages, and modulo arithmetic, which could be systematically mapped into the formal elementary school mathematics. The five-stage learning strategy, namely contextual exploration, mathematics identification, formalization, contextual reflection, and extension, can increased student engagement, abstraction ability, thinking flexibility, and internalization of social values. This research made theoretical contributions to ethnomathematics and culture-based mathematics education, while also proposing an adaptable strategy implemented in international contexts. Practical implications include the development of contextual with further research directions focused on strategy validation across cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the enhancement of students’ learning motivation and cognitive achievement through the implementation of a module-based instructional model integrated with the local wisdom of West Papua. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach with a one-group pretest–posttest design, data were collected using cognitive tests and a Likert-scale motivation questionnaire. Quantitative analysis was conducted using Minitab software to assess statistical significance, while students’ motivational responses were analyzed descriptively. The results revealed a substantial improvement in students’ cognitive performance, with the average score increasing from 40.80 (pretest) to 86.40 (posttest). A paired-sample t-test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (t = -8.718, p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the motivation questionnaire results showed a significant enhancement in students’ learning motivation, with the mean Likert score rising from 3.2 (pretest) to 4.0 (posttest), corresponding to 100% positive responses categorized as highly valid. These findings demonstrate that integrating culturally responsive learning modules can effectively enhance both students’ cognitive understanding and their motivation toward learning mathematics. The local wisdom–based module has proven to be a feasible and engaging instructional tool for contextualized mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to (1) analyze students’ statistical reasoning achievement through the Midterm Exam in the Educational Research Statistics course, (2) evaluate lecturers’ adherence to Statistical Reasoning Learning Environment (SRLE) principles using the Statistics Teaching Inventory (STI), and (3) examine the relationship between students’ reasoning outcomes and SRLE implementation. Employing a descriptive quantitative-qualitative method with purposive sampling of one class, data were collected from exam results and STI responses. The findings indicate that students demonstrated strong performance in the aspects of Describing (approximately 89%), Organizing (75.8%), and interpreting data in the context of the t-test (71.6%). However, difficulties remain in the aspect of Representing Data, particularly in one-way ANOVA tasks that require Interpreting SPSS outputs, which only reached 64.4%. Meanwhile, the STI results show that lecturers’ adherence to SRLE principles falls within the moderate to high category (scale 3–5), especially in the application of contextual tasks and the use of real data, both receiving the highest score of 5. These results emphasize the need to enhance students’ skills in representing and interpreting complex data and the importance of consistent SRLE implementation to foster statistical reasoning development.

Abstract

Background. Student reasoning in learning mathematics contributes significantly to the achievement of student mathematics learning outcomes. The main objective of this study is to investigate the process of reversible reasoning in students for inverse problems, in the case of Adjie (Ad). The research method used to reveal the reversible reasoning in Adjie's case using descriptive qualitative research methods. Sampling was carried out using purposive sampling technique where the research sample was selected based on reversible reasoning criteria. Retrieval research data uses the results of students' mathematical work, think aloud, interviews, and the components that cause reversible reasoning. The results of our study found that the process begins with an obstacle that causes Ad to be unable to continue the resolution process, resulting in a metacognition process by analyzing the problem again analytically and developing other heuristic strategies. Ad shows a change in perspective where he initially interpreted inverse as the act of swapping independent and dependent variables and switched to interpreting inverse as the opposite of a function process involving analogy and image representation. The contribution of this research provides knowledge that reversible reasoning can occur in understanding and solving mathematical problems in inverse material.   Latar belakang.

Abstract

Intrinsic Cognitive Load (ICL) is a cognitive load inherent in the material and has a positive impact on learning. However, working memory as an active tool that processes cognitive load has limited capacity, and ICL cannot be completely eliminated. Group learning is one of the learning methods that can help manage ICL. Mathematics is one of the subjects with high ICL, including the Pythagorean theorem. This study aims to analyze the forms of teacher intervention during group discussions that support students in managing ICL while constructing the Pythagorean Theorem. The data source of this study consisted of 14 eighth-grade students divided into four groups. The results showed that prerequisite activation, validation, scaffolding, and abstraction in teacher interventions helped eliminate ICL.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' written mathematical communication in solving PISA-type questions in terms of Littauer personality types. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects consist of two eighth-grade students in Malang, each representing a different personality type. The research instruments include the Littauer personality questionnaire, PISA-style mathematical literacy questions, and interview guidelines. Student personality types were identified using Littauer's classification, which divides individuals into four dominant types: Sanguine, Melancholic, Choleric, and Phlegmatic. From the classification results, two opposing personality types—Sanguine and Melancholic—were selected as the focus of this study.  The analysis results explain that Sanguinis students are able to fulfill the written text aspect. Sanguinis students are able to write down the information obtained using their own language. However, they tend to be less thorough in their work. This is due to the Sanguinis nature, which tends to be expressive but less thorough. Then, in the drawing aspect, Melancholic students are able to present graphs and interpret patterns in the data obtained in accordance with the context of the question. In the written text aspect, students are able to write down the information in the question using their own language and explain the values obtained in the context of the question. In the mathematical expression aspect, students are also able to express the information in the question in the form of a mathematical model, write down strategies, and draw conclusions from the results of their solutions. The perfectionist nature of Melancholic students makes them think in detail when solving mathematical problems.
