Abstract

Mathematical reasoning ability is an important skill that students must have in the process of learning mathematics. This skill allows students to develop logical, analytical, systematic, critical, and creative thinking patterns. Based on this, the researcher examined the mathematical reasoning ability of grade VII students at SMP Negeri 2 Pakisaji in solving story problems about blocks and cubes. This study is entitled "Analysis of Students' Mathematical Reasoning Ability in Solving Cuboid and Cube Story Problems Reviewed from Learning Styles" and uses a descriptive qualitative approach. This study involved 30 students, of which 6 students would be selected for analysis, with 2 students from each category of high and low learning styles. Data collection methods include learning style tests, written tests, interview guidelines, and documentation. The results of the study showed that students with visual learning styles and high mathematical reasoning abilities can present, ask questions, make guesses, perform mathematical manipulations, draw conclusions, and check the correctness of answers. In contrast, students with low mathematical reasoning abilities have not been able to do these things. The same thing is also seen in students with auditory and kinesthetic learning styles who have high mathematical reasoning abilities, where they can do similar activities, while students with low mathematical reasoning abilities still face difficulties.

Abstract

Linear pattern is the primary material in learning number patterns in junior high schools, but there are still many students who fail to generalize the linear pattern. The students’ failure in generalizing the pattern occurred when the students ended to view the problems globally without breaking them into the constructors’ components such as the experience of field-dependent type students. For this reason, this study was carried out to explore the thinking process of students who fail and investigate the thinking processes of students who succeed in generalizing linear patterns. The results of this study provide an effective learning strategy solution for field-dependent students in generalizing linear patterns. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design to junior high school students. The results indicated that students in the field-dependent cognitive style looked at pattern questions represented in the form of geometric images globally without looking at the structure of the image. Two strategies for generalizing linear patterns used by field-dependent students were examined, namely recursive and different strategies.

Abstract

Mathematics education and teaching should not only include routine tasks; but tasks that need practice and memorization are mathematically more prosperous and more difficult because they promote problem-solving, investigation, and the discovery of the actual value of mathematical assertions. Therefore, the teacher must be able to select, create, and modify assignments under the established goals. This study attempts to examine opportunities and challenges that teachers encounter while adopting problem-based tasks. The subjects involved in this study were three secondary school mathematics teachers that are acceptable, in East Java, Indonesia. The teachers involved have more than five years of teaching experience and have good academic qualifications. The data collection consisted of observing three classes of secondary school during the implementation of a problem-based task related to the topic of rectangles and algebra. The study begins with the introduction and giving of several examples of problem-based tasks in secondary school mathematics designed to foster advanced learners' critical thinking and creativity. The findings show that teachers gain new knowledge about problem-based assignments and pedagogical insights on how they explain them to students. The results also provide an overview of the challenges for teachers to design and implement problem-based tasks.

Abstract

This research aimed to present a unique approach by integrating the Tordauk jerpara tel tradition of the Aru community into formal mathematics learning, describing the relationship between local cultural practices and mathematics concepts. The objectives were to identify the mathematics values contained in tradition and design a strategy for integrating the values into the elementary school curriculum to improve conceptual understanding and global mathematics literacy. A qualitative approach with an ethnomathematics design was adopted, additionally 20 third-grade elementary school students in Aru Regency were selected as participants. Data were collected through observation, role playing, interviews, and document analysis. The results showed the Tordauk jerpara tel tradition contained the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, ratios, averages, and modulo arithmetic, which could be systematically mapped into the formal elementary school mathematics. The five-stage learning strategy, namely contextual exploration, mathematics identification, formalization, contextual reflection, and extension, can increased student engagement, abstraction ability, thinking flexibility, and internalization of social values. This research made theoretical contributions to ethnomathematics and culture-based mathematics education, while also proposing an adaptable strategy implemented in international contexts. Practical implications include the development of contextual with further research directions focused on strategy validation across cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the enhancement of students’ learning motivation and cognitive achievement through the implementation of a module-based instructional model integrated with the local wisdom of West Papua. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach with a one-group pretest–posttest design, data were collected using cognitive tests and a Likert-scale motivation questionnaire. Quantitative analysis was conducted using Minitab software to assess statistical significance, while students’ motivational responses were analyzed descriptively. The results revealed a substantial improvement in students’ cognitive performance, with the average score increasing from 40.80 (pretest) to 86.40 (posttest). A paired-sample t-test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (t = -8.718, p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the motivation questionnaire results showed a significant enhancement in students’ learning motivation, with the mean Likert score rising from 3.2 (pretest) to 4.0 (posttest), corresponding to 100% positive responses categorized as highly valid. These findings demonstrate that integrating culturally responsive learning modules can effectively enhance both students’ cognitive understanding and their motivation toward learning mathematics. The local wisdom–based module has proven to be a feasible and engaging instructional tool for contextualized mathematics learning.
