Abstract

Purpose –This study aims to explore how a STEM-based learning design integrated with the engineering design process in enhancing elementary school students’ scientific and engineering literacy through the Green Refrigerant Box innovation in elementary schools.Methodology – A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed. The quantitative phase used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design involving 122 fifth-grade students from four elementary schools. The experimental group received STEM-based learning integrated with the engineering design process, while the control group followed regular instruction without STEM-based learning. Data were collected using scientific and engineering literacy tests and analyzed using N-gain and ANCOVA, with effect sizes reported using partial eta squared (η²ₚ). The qualitative phase involved observations, interviews, and documentation, analyzed through thematic analysis to support the quantitative results.Findings – The experimental group showed higher improvement in scientific literacy (N-gain = 0.63, moderate–high) than the control group (0.36, moderate), with a significant effect (F = 58.72, p < 0.001, η²ₚ = 0.33). Engineering literacy also improved more in the experimental group (0.55, moderate) compared to the control group (0.27, low–moderate), with a significant effect (F = 46.35, p < 0.001, η²ₚ = 0.28). Qualitative findings revealed shifts toward mechanistic reasoning, improved data interpretation, and stronger connections between scientific concepts and real-world contexts, along with more systematic design thinkingContribution – This study highlights the complementary relationship between scientific and engineering literacy, where science informs design decisions and engineering reinforces conceptual understanding, and offers empirical insights into STEM-based learning in elementary education

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the relationship between numeracy ability and reflective thinking among elementary school students in mathematics learning. Numeracy ability includes understanding number concepts, interpreting quantitative information, and applying mathematics in everyday contexts. Reflective thinking is a higher-order thinking skill that involves understanding the problem, evaluating strategies, drawing conclusions, and reflecting on the outcomes of problem-solving.Methodology – A quantitative correlational design was employed involving 134 fourth- and fifth-grade students in Kartoharjo District, Madiun City, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using validated and reliable numeracy and reflective thinking tests. The data were analyzed using normality and linearity tests, followed by the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test.Findings – The data met the assumptions of normality (numeracy: p = 0.087; reflective thinking: p = 0.092) and linearity (deviation from linearity: p = 0.214). Pearson correlation analysis revealed a positive and significant relationship between numeracy ability and reflective thinking (r = 0.623, p < 0.001), indicating that students with higher numeracy ability tend to demonstrate stronger reflective thinking skills.Significance – This study contributes empirical evidence regarding the relationship between numeracy ability and reflective thinking among elementary school students, an area that has received limited attention in elementary mathematics education. The findings provide practical implications for designing numeracy-oriented mathematics instruction to foster higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

In developing countries, educating all segments of society about the threat of disaster is not always possible due to a lack of expertise and educational materials. Consequently, one of the best ways to disseminate disaster risk awareness programs is to integrate this initiative into children's activities through education. Important information for a large part of the population can be conveyed through the knowledge, skills and enthusiastic motivation of the children. The purpose of this study is to provide an educational picture to the wider community about the importance of disaster mitigation education which is internalized through education, especially social studies learning for elementary school children. Children as assets and future leaders, can learn to protect themselves and their environment in the future through a global mitigation culture to increase the safety of themselves, their families and their communities as they grow up. Children are seen as a 'powerful force' in behavior change for the next generation to deal with emergencies when they occur and bounce back from the effects of disasters.
