Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore a variety of types of Students Anxiety in Speaking English in the tenth grade of MAN 5 Mandailing Natal, as well as the factors that contributed to the Student's anxiety in speaking English in the tenth grade of MAN 5 Mandailing Natal by using youtube. The objection is the first year of the 2020/2021 school year. This method was a qualitative study that used observations and interviews to collect data. the data analysis in this study was descriptive analysis, data reduction, data display, conclusion, or verification. Based on the research it found that there were three types of student anxiety in learning English at the tenth-grade of MAN 5 Mandailing Natal, they are State anxiety, where the students feel panic and could stress when they want to speak in English, trait anxiety, where the students feel nervous when the students could not understand the teacher explanation, and specific-situation Anxiety, where the students should do examination about speaking. three factors caused the student's anxiety in learning English in the tenth grade of MAN 5 Mandailing Natal. these factors are communication apprehension, where the students could not speak English because they have little experience with English and do not always practice English, test anxiety, where the students feel anxious because they have to do the test that the teacher gives them, and fear of negative evaluation when students afraid about others people comment to them.

Abstract

Autism comes from the Greek phrase vehicles this means that self. Autism isn't always a kind of disorder however is a complicated developmental sickness resulting from harm to the brain, usually may be detected on account that the kid is born or at the age of a toddler. One of the problems confronted by autistic kids in communication, particularly for kids who enjoy intense barriers, is in gaining knowledge of language and speech. The issue of autistic kids in speaking is because of experiencing language disorders (verbal and non-verbal), despite the fact that language is the principal medium of communication. The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of echo-influenced communication in children with autism. In this study, researchers use a qualitative approach to explain existing reality. The main informants for this study were teachers at the Emotionally Focused Therapy Center and teachers at the Behavior Therapy Center. The results of the study are that learning to communicate with nonverbal children with autism is by communicating the concept of language through visual media, with teachers asking questions and children answering things with their abilities. Communication difficulties in children with autism are due to language disorders (linguistic and nonverbal), but language is the most important medium of communication. They often find it difficult to convey their desires both verbally (verbally / speaking) and non-verbally (gesturing / gesturing and writing). Most of them can speak and use short sentences with basic vocabulary, but their vocabulary is limited and their language is difficult to understand.

Abstract

Online learning is a transitional form of the education system in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is attempted as a form of continuing education by utilizing the Zoom, WhatsApp (WA), Google Form, and Google Meet applications. This study attempts to describe English learning activities at SMP IT Ad-Durrah Medan which implements an online learning system via WhatsApp. The data collection process was carried out systematically using interview techniques (also via online via google form). The results of this study indicate that online learning systems are considered appropriate as an alternative to maintaining the sustainability of the educational process in the Covid-19 era, including those practiced by education providers at SMP IT Ad-Durrah Medan. The reason for using the WhatsApp application is based on the familiarity of the application among teachers, students, and student guardians. The process of learning activities, assignments, and learning assessments are carried out virtually by educators during the Covid-19 pandemic. Likewise, the weaknesses of the online learning system are obtained, namely the internet signal is often weak so that it is slow to access search pages on google and student learning facilities are still limited.

Abstract

This research was aimed to enhance students’ speaking skill at eight grade students of Islamic Junior High School Sawit Seberang, Langkat Regency. The subject of this research was a class consisted of 40 students. The research consisted of two cycles. Each cycles consisted of two meetings. The object of this research was to enhance students’ speaking skill by the use of Ice Breaker strategy. This research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research. Qualitative and Quantitative data were used in this research. The qualitative data while the quantitative data were taken from students’ score in Pre-Test, Post Test I, and Post-Test II. The result of analyzing data indicated that there was significance enhancement on students’ speaking skill after the use of Ice Breaker strategy. It can be seen from the students’ score in every cycle. In Pre-Test, there were only 30% (12 students) whose score up to 75. In Post-Test I, there was 52.5% on the percentage of students whose score up 75 (21 students), while in Post-Test II there were 80% students whose score up 75 (32 students). From data analysis, it showed that there was enhancement on students’ speaking skill. It can be seen from the mean of Post-Test II was 80.3. In other words, students’ speaking skill has enhanced. Based on the qualitative data, the students gave good responses and showed enthusiasm after the use of Ice Breaker strategy in speaking skill.

Abstract

The point of this study is planned to research the ability of understudies in performing public speaking, in light of their personality: extrovert and introvert. This study utilized a qualitative approach where the scientist depicted the introvert and extrovert personalities of individual character of EFL students talking execution. The participants were 203 understudies from five classes of English. The data collection technique used was semi-structured. The data collected during this study was then examined using two different techniques: statistical counting for quantitative information about the introvert and extrovert traits of the students and analysis for qualitative information about the effectiveness of their public speaking. The findings show that on average, extrovert students’ accomplishments in talking are better than introverts, but not significant, however not huge. The thing that matters is simply 0.02 points among 0 to 5 in scoring. Students who are introverts or extroverts have different learning methods; introverts tend to study by themselves, while extroverts enjoy interacting with others and studying in groups.

Abstract

Several problems of speaking in SMAN 6 Medan attracted researchers to conduct the research as an effort to help the students in language learning. Researchers attempted to see the effectiveness of Pictionary game toward English speaking skill. This Pictionary game is a simple game and applicable for all levels of students. The main function of this game is building of creative thinking, increasing of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, developing student’s bravery in expression of the ideas and creating of responsibility and cooperative towards the students. Because of this advantage, many researchers conducted this game on language learning such as the effect of Pictionary game on vocabulary mastery and researchers decided to see whether Pictionary game is effective for student speaking skill. This study is conducted by using an experimental design. In collecting of the data, researcher took pre-test and post-test from experimental and control class and examined them to see whether Pictionary game is effective or not. After analyzing of the data using of three tests, researchers found that the students’ score in experimental group was higher than control group in post-test. The calculation showed tobserved was 2.07. The degree of the freedom was 70 (df= n1 + n2 – 2) that means (df= 36 + 36 – 2) at the significance level 0.05, thus the critical score was 1.97. It can be concluded ttable was 1.97. then, the calculation of students’ scores shown that tobserved > ttable that means (Ha) was accepted, and (H0) was rejected. It means there is significance effect of the students’ speaking skill after treated by Pictionary game.

Abstract

Penulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana kebijakan-kebijakan yang diambil oleh SMP Swasta Nur Adia dalam menjalankan pembelajaran tatap muka terbatas. Metode penelitian yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif jenis metode fenomenologi dan juga observasi langsung. Berdasarkan obeservasi lapangan yang telah dilakukan, terdapat beberapa kebijakan yang ditetapkan oleh sekolah untuk menjalankan pembelajaran tatap muka secara terbatas ini, seperti wajib mematuhi protokol kesehatan, pembagian kelas menjadi dua gelombang dan pengurangan jam belajar. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa meskipun jam belajar cenderung lebih singkat, para guru dan murid merasa lebih efektif dalam menyampaikan dan memahami materi pembelajaran di sekolah.

Abstract

This study focuses on how important it is to apply politeness in speaking with someone from the perspective of English Education students. To do this research, researchers used qualitative methods. One of the techniques that researchers use in this study is the non-interactive technique that is the questionnaire. This questionnaire was chosen to explore deeper information about the opinions of English Education Students at State Islamic University of North Sumatera Medan starting from the 2nd – 8th Semester (participants or respondents) on the importance of expressing politeness. Researchers chose the questionnaire technique in order to shorten the time and got more participants rather than had to conduct interviews. This study reports the choice of being polite for people is influenced by differences in power relations, such as notion of status, age, gender, and social distance. This study emphasizes that politeness is needed to be implemented since rudeness creates conflict between one to another person.

Abstract

This research investigates an overview of students' difficulties in writing descriptive text through linguistic and psychology problems. This research presents a case study as qualitative research of students in eighth grade of SMP Darussalam Medan. The sample comprised 10 students (4 males and 6 females) through purposive sampling. This study used observation, documentation, and interview. In this study, data collection from each instrument was as follows: document data collection through student descriptive writing and direct interview data collection via video call on WhatsApp. The data analysis procedure of this study was followed by Miles and Hubermen in 1984 which covered data reduction, data interpretation, and drawing a conclusion. Based on the observation result supported by the document and interview through the triangulation method, students found difficulties in using punctuation and capitalization in writing descriptive. The students’ felt difficulty in using grammar lack of vocabulary and mechanics. In addition, the practice of writing essays also makes students skilled in writing. With practice, students will know the difficulties they face in writing to know the quality of their writing. Keywords: Difficulties, Writing skill, Descriptive text.
