Abstract

Abstract. This paper attempts to unfold the phenomena of two different translation versions of culinary terms in film ‘Chef’, namely the subtitle version of ‘Siberian’ and of ‘Agent Nas’. The objectives of the study are to describe the translation techniques used in translating the culinary specific terms in each subtitle version and to explain the influence of the translation techniques used towards the accuracy, acceptability, and the readability of the culinary specific term translation. The study is a product, context, and participant-oriented translation research based on qualitative paradigm that employs a case study model. The data collection techniques are document analysis and focus group discussion and the data technique analysis adopt the principles of ethnography manifested in the use of domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis as well as finding cultural values. The result of the study shows that the two subtitlers have different frequency level in using the techniques and that the techniques used affect the quality of the culinary term translation. The most obvious distinction is that Siberian resorts to many pure borrowings compared to Agent Nas. This translates to a good score of accuracy, but potentially reduce the level of acceptability of the translation. In addition, Agent Nas resorts to annotation technique that is meant to improve the understanding of the viewers while Siberian does not. All in all, the overall translation quality of culinary terms produced by the two subtitlers is almost equal with Agent Nas version slightly better than Siberian. Keywords: culinary specific term translation; translation techniques; translation quality; subtitleAbstrak. Abstract

Self-efficacy (SE) is defined as public belief in their capacity to attain intended goals via their actions. Within an academic setting, SE is frequently referred to as Academic Self-Efficacy (ASE), which impacts learner judgments about one's ability to effectively achieve educational goals. To succeed in an academic context, students must complete several academic tasks in a variety of subjects. Fear of public speaking is one of the most major challenges that students face. In an EFL context, where learners have few opportunities to practice public speaking in real-life circumstances, debate helps them to use the language to communicate their viewpoints coherently. This study is important to identify students' levels of academic self-efficacy and how they function as a predictor of academic achievement. The qualitative case study is used to explore the problem in-depth in natural setting. The data were collected from open-questionnaire and semi structured interview. The participants of the study were included nine senior high school students who are the members of Debate Club. According to the findings of this study, Academic self-efficacy influences students' motivation to join the debate club. Prior debate club experience of members became the most essential consideration for students who joined the debate club. Vicarious experience is the second most crucial aspect in students' decision to join the debate club. Then there's social persuasion, which is crucial since it serves as a role model for students. Seniors or peers who have accomplished a lot may use their success to encourage other students to join them. Another outcome is that members have strong emotional well-being, so even if they fail or have difficulties participating, they do not abandon all debate club activities. Another study was planned to involve more debate club members and to examine the teacher's role as debate supervisor.

Abstract

Numerous studies have investigated the integration of critical thinking in EFL classrooms and textbooks. Still, relatively few have investigated the integration of critical thinking into reading lesson plans and classroom instructions. The current study adopted a qualitative case study approach to provide insight into how pre-service EFL teachers infused critical thinking skills into online reading classrooms. The study also gives information on pre-service EFL teachers' challenges in critical thinking integration into reading classrooms. Eight pre-service EFL teachers who completed all three phases of the faculty-mandated teaching practicum program participated in the study. Document analysis, virtual classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection techniques to fulfill the research objectives. As the study framework, Bloom's revised taxonomy was applied to lesson plan data to examine how critical thinking components are incorporated. Virtual classroom observations illuminated the incorporation of critical thinking into reading lessons. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather more information regarding the challenges of integrating critical thinking skills. The present study reveals that pre-service EFL teachers integrated critical thinking aspects into reading online classes with a greater emphasis on lower-order cognitive than higher-order cognitive processes. It implies that pre-service EFL teachers had insufficient preparation for teaching practicum programs. Due to the significance of critical thinking skills for EFL students, this study recommends that teacher training institutes strengthen the critical thinking abilities of pre-service EFL teachers so that they are more equipped to teach and promote critical thinking in EFL classrooms. Keywords: classroom instructions, critical thinking, lesson plans, pre-service teachers
