Abstract

Heavy metal pollution is a serious problem because it cannot be degraded by natural processes and persist in soil, water, and sediment. Many indigenous microorganisms isolated from heavy metal contaminated sites had tolerance to heavy metals toxicity and could be used for bioremediation agent because of its capability to biosorb heavy metals. The aim of this research was to study the potency of copper resistant bacteria Acinetobacter sp. IrC2 as a biosorbent of heavy metals. Biosorption was determined by measuring the heavy metals concentration on growing medium by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The research showed that Acinetobacter sp. IrC2 was capable of growing in medium containing each of 2 mM of copper, zinc, lead, cadmium, and the mixture of those heavy metals. The addition of copper and lead in the medium changed morphological appearance of colonies to green and brown, respectively, suggesting that the survival mechanism of the isolate was by biosorbing copper or lead inside the cells. The percentage of heavy metals biosorption efficiency using live cells of Acinetobacter sp.IrC2 were up to 64.31% of copper, 24.73% of zinc, 62.79% of lead, and 11.56% of cadmium. Acinetobacter sp. IrC2 also reduced copper, lead, and cadmium concentration up to 24.30, 75.93, and 16.38%, respectively, in medium supplemented with 1 mM of the mixture of these heavy metals. The findings of this study indicated that Acinetobacter sp. IrC2 was a promising bacterium for removal of heavy metals.

Abstract

Background: Melanoma is a skin disorder caused by malignant degeneration of the pigment cells melanocytes. The disease is characterized by widespread discoloration with irregular and protruding edges. In treating cancer itself, radiotherapy technology, has been found. It is a method of treating cancer using high-energy radiation rays that are focused on cancerous tissue to kill or stop cancer cell division. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of radiotherapy technology as a treatment solution for melanoma skin cancer. The focuses of the study in this paper are the integumentary system and skin structure, melanoma skin cancer, the body's mechanisms for melanoma skin cancer, and radiotherapy as a treatment method. Methods: The research method used is literature study from various sources, to help understand the problem more deeply and completely. Conclusions: Melanoma, which attacks one of the body's integumentary systems, namely the skin, has a close relationship with homeostatic dysregulation and endocrine damage. However, radiotherapy method can be used to cure melanoma skin cancer by shooting X-rays and damaging the cancer cells and also reducing their spread to other parts of the organs. This method is effective because melanoma skin cancer is localized or has not spread to other organs. However, the use of radiotherapy can also have a negative impact on the body and can give unwanted side effects, so consideration is needed before using this method.

Abstract

Background: The nervous system is composed of a complex structure to support its highly organized work. Damage to the working mechanism of nervous systems can exert fatal impacts to the human body. One of the consequences of damage to the mechanism of action potentials is grand mal epilepsy. The purpose of this paper is to determine the structure, function, and mechanism of action of neurons, establish grand mal epilepsy as a result of damage to the working mechanism of neurons, and recognize the ketogenic diet as a non-pharmacological therapy for epilepsy patients. Methods: The research method used is descriptive qualitative research. Results: Nerve cells generally consist of dendrites for receiving stimuli, cell bodies for transmitting stimuli to the axon, and axons for transmitting stimuli to other nerve cells. Grand mal epilepsy is a nervous system disorder caused by the increased activity of sending electrical waves throughout the brain that can reach up to four times faster than normal. However, grand mal epilepsy patients suffer from an excessive number of seizures that may occur at any time. Conclusions: The ketogenic diet method is a high-fat and low-carbohydrate diet method that can reduce electrical activity in the brain. Ketone-containing fats have a stabilizing effect on the central nervous system, contributing to anticonvulsant and antiepileptic effects that may reduce the excessive number of seizures experienced by patients. The application of this diet should be balanced with the provision of additional intake of multivitamins, minerals, and fiber to balance the nutrients the body needs.

Abstract

Skin cancer is a disease that can cause the loss of the ability to regenerate and protect the skin normally. The types of skin cancer that are known are melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Non-melanoma Basal cell carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm originating from non-keratinizing cells in the basal layer of the skin's epidermis. The treatment itself is carried out through the application of immunotherapy, namely the use of drug therapy Programmed Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1). This study aims to see the effectiveness of PD-L1 Therapy as a treatment for basal cell carcinoma. The focus of the study of the article is the integument system, skin cancer, non-melanoma basal cell carcinoma, and the effect of anti-PD-L1 use. The research method used is a literature review from various sources. Skin cancer Basal cell carcinoma attacks the basal cells of the epidermis, causing disruption. Attacks slowly, but when ignored will spread wider and more severe. Through PD-L1 therapy by binding to PD-1 receptors on immune cells, it causes the activation of T lymphocytes as anti-cancer cells in the body that suppress growth while actively controlling tumor cells. Through the use of PD-L1 therapy in treating cancer that attacks basal cells, it will suppress growth, destroy and shrink cancer cells, and increase the body's immunity against cancer cells.

Abstract

The Rote turtle with the scientific name Chelodina mccordi is an endemic animal from Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara. The Rote turtle is unique in its long neck and snake-like head. Rote turtles are rarely found in their natural habitat because many are hunted to be traded by collectors of endemic reptiles. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the habitat and behavior of the rote tortoise on its morphology and body mechanisms. The method used to compile this paper is to use literature reviews and literature studies from various sources to discuss 5 topics of study, namely: Rote Turtle Habitat, Rote Turtle Morphology, Blood Circulation System, Rote Turtle Respiratory System, Osmoregulation and Excretion of the Rote Turtle, and Uniqueness and Management of the Rote Turtle. Based on the results obtained, the habitat of the Rote turtle greatly influences the morphology and mechanisms of blood, respiration, osmoregulation, and excretion of the Rote turtle. The habitat for tortoise rote is the appropriate physical environment. Low rainfall of around 800-1200 mm/year and swamp grass with a height of about 2-3 meters. Potential predators for food and hunting have caused the Rote tortoise to become rare and rarely found in its natural habitat. The NTT government has designated three natural habitat lakes are natural habitats and the Governor of NTT Decree Number: 204/KEP/HK/2019 made the rote turtle habitat for the rote turtle Essential Ecosystem Area.
