Abstract

Da'wah serves as a crucial medium for disseminating and acquiring religious knowledge within the community. Effective da'wah requires preachers to adopt appropriate communication strategies that align with the linguistic and cognitive abilities of the audience, ensuring successful message reception and implementation. Sundanese is one of the languages commonly used by preachers in certain regions, particularly in social and religious interactions. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection methods. The research focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of delivering da'wah in Sundanese within the Wanaraja Garut area. The findings indicate that preaching in Sundanese proves to be highly effective among the Sundanese community. It not only facilitates better understanding but also reinforces cultural identity, preserving traditional values that are gradually fading. The use of Sundanese in da'wah contributes to reviving traditional etiquette, such as respectful speech towards elders and politeness in social interactions. This study highlights the significance of language as a cultural and religious tool in sustaining both Islamic teachings and Sundanese traditions.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the dual role of religion in contemporary society—as both a source of tolerance and a driver of intolerance—by critically analyzing the socio-political, cultural, and global contexts that shape religious discourse. The research responds to the urgency of understanding religion beyond theological essentialism, emphasizing the need for a sociological approach to interpret the contradictory manifestations of religion in plural societies. Employing a qualitative design through critical literature review, the study analyzes academic texts and discourse on religion using thematic content analysis. The data sources include influential works by Diana Eck, John Hick, Mark Juergensmeyer, Karen Armstrong, Jeremy Menchik, Robert Hefner, and others. The findings reveal three significant patterns: religion as a moral force fostering interfaith dialogue; religion as an ideological tool legitimizing social exclusion; and the ambivalent image of religion shaped by state politics, popular media, and transnational religious networks. The study demonstrates that religion is never neutral—it is continuously constructed and contested within power relations, identity politics, and symbolic representation. These insights underscore the functional and dysfunctional roles of religion in shaping social cohesion and polarization. The implications of this research highlight the urgency of promoting critical religious literacy, interfaith education, and inclusive public policies that prevent the instrumentalization of religion for sectarian or authoritarian interests. The originality of this study lies in its multidimensional mapping of the social construction of religion, shifting the analytical lens from sacred texts to contextual forces. By integrating classic sociological theories with the Indonesian context, this research offers a comprehensive and contextually grounded contribution to the sociology of religion.

Abstract

Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) is a Sharia-based financial institution that supports financial inclusion and economic empowerment within multicultural societies. The principles of justice, solidarity, and sustainability adopted by BMT enable financial access not only for Muslim communities but also for non-Muslim communities. However, the implementation of BMT faces several challenges, including the stigma of Islamic finance exclusivity, low levels of Sharia financial literacy among the public, and suboptimal regulatory support. This study aims to analyze how the concept of multiculturalism can be integrated into BMT operations to strengthen its role as an inclusive financial model, as well as to identify challenges and strategies for optimizing its implementation. The research method employed is a literature review using a descriptive-critical analysis approach, based on academic sources including journals, books, and recent research reports relevant to multiculturalism, Islamic economics, and BMT practices in plural societies. The findings indicate that BMT has strong potential to serve as an effective inclusive financial model through strategies such as enhancing Sharia financial literacy, strengthening supportive regulations, and integrating financial technology (fintech

Abstract

Each generation has its character because of the differences in era context. The Z Generation (Gen Zers) also has distinctive features that are different from the previous generation. Gen Zers is a generation that lives in the context of the world that is strongly influenced by scientific and digital technological advances in all fields, especially in communication and information fields. In Western countries, there are serious symptoms of a decline in the number of Gen Zers who are affiliated with a religion or who attended Church. They think that being affiliated with a religion or attending Church isn’t something very important. Yet, it doesn’t mean that they disregard the values of spirituality and morality. On the contrary, they are deeply concerned with universal spiritual and moral values. For them, spirituality and morality are “yes”, but religion is “no”. The study’s purpose is to investigate the role of religion according to Gen Zers’ opinions in Bandung. The study method is a quantitative method that makes use of an e-questionnaire as a data collection tool. All respondents are students who are studying at a certain private university in Bandung. The main finding is almost all respondents opine that affiliating with religion isn’t determining factor for human salvation even though they are affiliated with a religion. The conclusion is that there are at least five ambiguous stances of Gen Zers on the role of religion in human salvation. They are religious formalism, agnosticism, religious indifferentism, practical atheism, and religionism.

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore how the Instagram account @walmajelena functions as a digital space for expressing the religiosity of Catholic women and to examine how its content shapes the followers’ perspectives, understanding, and spiritual experiences in the digital sphere. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative approach within a sociological and media studies framework with descriptive-analytical methods. Data were collected through digital observation and analysis of content and responses from followers of the account. Findings: The findings reveal that @walmajelena serves as a warm, reflective, and contextual medium of faith expression for Catholic women. Through four major themes—prayer, worship attire, Catholic identity, and faith education—the account constructs a dynamic and participatory spiritual space relevant to younger generations. Interaction between the account owner and her followers illustrates a collective process of religious identity construction, turning social media into a site for the negotiation, affirmation, and internalization of evolving faith values. Research Implications: These findings demonstrate that social media can act as an interactive and dialogical sacred space that empowers lay Catholic women to articulate faith beyond institutional boundaries. The study highlights the need for digital–theological literacy and pastoral accompaniment to ensure that digital evangelization remains both spiritually grounded and contextually relevant. Originality/Value: This research offers an original contribution by applying Berger and Luckmann’s social construction theory to explain how religious identity is dynamically shaped through digital interaction. It also presents a new understanding of female digital religiosity, showing how personal faith narratives evolve into collective expressions of Catholic identity within Indonesia’s plural digital culture.
