Abstract

High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) is the ability to think in the complex process which useful for transferring the knowledge in real life, thinking critically, and solving the problems. Categories of HOTS level are analyzing, evaluating, and creating.  To assess those abilities, HOTS can we find in reading exercises. This research is aimed to analyze the HOTS questions in reading exercises. This research is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected from Bright an English course book for grade IX of junior high school. This study using indicators in Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy as instrument. The result showed that the the total of HOTS questions is 78 questions or 18,9% from 412 reading questions. The percentage of each HOTS category are 11,9% for analyzing level, 5,8% evaluating level, and 1,2% creating level. Nevertheless, HOTS questions is not the dominant level in this coursebook.  Keywords:  High Order Thinking Skill, reading questions, revised Bloom’taxonomy

Abstract

Nowadays english has been taught for all kind of education since elementary until university. However, almost of students think that English as difficult subject, as a result they feel boring when learning English especially learning grammar. Furthermore, the teacher must find the appropriate technique to motivate the students. One of the appropriate techniques that can be use is word by word games. Word by word games is a game that can be done by the teacher and the students in learning English. In this game the teacher make students in groups and every group will give a key word to develop until correctly grammatical sentences. This game can motivate students in learning English so that they not feel boring. Abstrak Pada saat ini pelajaran bahasa Inggris telah diajarkan pada semua jenjang pendidikan seperti sekolah dasar, sekolah menengah pertama, sekolah menengah atas hingga universitas. Namun,hampir seluruh siswa beranggapan bahwa pelajaran bahasa Inggris merupakan mata pelajaran yang dianggap sulit sehingga mereka cendrung merasa bosan ketika berhadapan dengan mata pelajaran ini, terutama sekali pada saat belajar grammar.Untuk itu, guru harus dapat menggunakan cara yang tepat agar siswa dapat termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa Inggris.Salah satu cara yang cocok untuk memotivasi siswa sekolah menengah pertama untuk belajar grammar adalah  dengan menggunakan sebuah permainan yang dikenal dengan “word by word game”. Word by word game adalah sebuah permainan yang dilakukan oleh guru dan siswa agar siswa menyukai pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Pada permainan ini guru membagi siswa dalam beberapa kelompok dan memberikan sebuah kata kunci kepada setiap kelompok untuk dikembangkan kedalam sebuah kalimat dengan struktur atau pola yang benar. Permainan ini dapat memotivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa inggris sehingga mereka tidak mudah bosan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This research was about the students' ability in writing a discussion text seen from the rhetorical structure and lexico-grammatical feature of the text., with the topic of Cyber-Bullying. The research design was the descriptive research. The population of this study was second year students of English Education Study Program Academic Year 2018. The population was 151 students from 5 classes. The sample was taken by random sampling technique so that the number of samples obtained was 22 samples. The instrument used was a test of discussion text writing for 90 minutes. The students’ writings were analyzed using discussion text writing rubric related to the rhetorical structure and lexico-grammatical feature of the text. Based on this research, students' ability in writing discussion texts was in fair (2) condition. Although the ability of students to write discussion texts was in fair (2) condition by looking to the rhetorical structure and lexico-grammatical feature of the text, there are several parts of the text that students have not understood how to write them. Students were expected to understand how to write a good discussion text by paying attention to the rhetorical structure and lexico-grammatical feature of the text.Key words: Writing Ability, Discussion text

Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk melihat kualitas generic structure dari teks discussion yang ditulis oleh siswa yang terdiri dari statement of issue, arguments for, arguments against, and recommendation.. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan rubrik skoring yang di adopsi dari Brown (2010) untuk menganalisis kualitas dari generic structure siswa dalam menulis teks discussion. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 3 SMAN 1 Lubuk Alung. Sampel dari penelitian ini berjumlah 30 siswa dari kelas XII IPA 3 yang didapat melalui teknik cluster sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan instrumen berupa tes menulis teks discussion. Peneliti menyediakan tiga topik berbeda sebagai pilihan oleh siswa dalam menulis teks discussion dengan waktu yang disediakan adalah 90 menit. Hasil dari tulisan siswa tersebut digunakan sebagai data dalam penelitian ini. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, kualitas teks yang ditulis siswa ditinjau dari segi generic structure berada dalam kategori fair. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa 30% dari tulisan siswa memenuhi kriteria dalam penulisan statement of issue dari teks discussion. Sedangkan untuk penulisan argumen pro dan kontra yang dikategorikan bagus dan memenuhi kriteria adalah mencapai 67% dari ‘arguments for’ dan 53% dari ‘arguments against’ yang ditulis oleh siswa. Selanjutnya, dari hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa 59% dari recommendation yang ditulis oleh siswa memenuhi kriteria.

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui pengaruh dari penggunaan model CIRC dalam pengajaran membaca teks Narrative dan Hortatory Exposition pada kelas XI. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen yang membandingkan model CIRC dengan metode yang biasa digunakan oleh guru di sekolah tersebut Penelitian ini melibatkan dua kelas, yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Kedua kelas mendapatkan pre-test pada pertemuan pertama, kemudian perlakuan dari pertemuan kedua sampai dengan pertemuan ketujuh, dan pada pertemuan terakhir merekan akan mendapatkan post-test. Dari penelitian ini disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan model ini dapat memberikan pengaruh yang baik terhadap pemahaman siswa. Hal ini telah dibuktikan dengan uji t, dimana thitung (4.48) > ttabel (1.99).Key Words: CIRC Model, Narrative Text, Hortatory Exposition Text, Experimental Research.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explain the implementation or the use of the R.E.A.P (Read, Encode, Annotate, Ponder) strategy to motivate students to read in junior high school. Through this paper, it is expected to give the advantage thing to the teachers in teaching students to read. In addition, by using the REAP (Read, Encode, Annotate, Ponder) Reading strategy, it is hoped that it can be a various way to increase the ability of students of junior high school in reading. This strategy can increase the students’ attention and motivation during classroom reading activities. Besides, the students become easily to share their ideas in order to read a narrative text. Then, it can encourage the students’ motivation in writing and make their group work useful for them in learning English. After that, the teachers have the opportunity to teach of English, especially in reading more delightful. AbstrakTujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk menjelaskan mengenai penerapan strategi R.E.A.P (Read, Encode, Annotate, Ponder) guna memotivasi siswa dalam membaca pada satuan pendidikan Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). Melalui makalah ini diharapkan akan memberikan hal yang bermanfaat bagi para guru dalam mengajarkan siswa untuk membaca. Selanjutnya, dengan menggunakan strategi REAP (Read, Encode,Annotate, Ponder) ini diharapkan mampu menjadi alternatif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). Strategi ini mampu meningkatkan perhatian dan motivasi siswa selama kegiatan menulis berlansung. Siswa juga mudah untuk berbagi ide saat membaca narrative text. Selanjutnya, strategi ini mampu meningkatkan motivasi membaca siswa dan membuat kerja kelompok mereka bermanfaat dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Kemudian guru juga berkesempatan untuk mengajarkan bahasa Inggris, terutama membaca, dengan lebih menyenangkan.

Abstract

This research amied to find out the correlation between context clues strategy and reading comprehension ability at the secon semester english department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is descriptive quantitative research. The sample of this research is 39 students selected by simple random sampling. The instrument used in this research were context clues and reading comprehension test. The test consisted of 25 items multiple choice. The research data were in the form of interpretations of students’ context clues and reading comprehension test results. Based on data analysis, it was found that there is significant correlation between students’ context clues strategy and reading comprehension ability. It was proved by the students’ ability in context clues in general is average by the mean 63,17. The students had difficulties in synonym context clues with percentage 53,84%. The students reading comprehension ability in general is good . It was proved by the mean 66,66. The students had difficulties in finding the fact of the passage and understanding vocabulary with percentage 62,39%. Furthermore, based on the result of analysis, it was found that there is significance correlation in strong category between context clues strategy and reading comprehension ability with rxy is 0,82.

Abstract

This article is aimed to describe the students’ ability in answering reading questions with HOTS and the mistakes made by the students in answering those questions. The population of this research was the eleven grade students at SMA N 3 Bukittinggi. The Students at XI MIPA 3 were chosen to be the sample of the research by using cluster random sampling. There were 36 students involved in this research. The instrument used in this research was reading test. In the reading test, the researcher provided the sample students five analytical exposition test with forty five multiple choice questions which is surrounded by analyzing, evaluating and creating questions. The indicators of the test were adopted from Bloom (1956) and Anderson Taxonomy (2001). Based on the result of this research, it was found that the students’ ability to answer reading questions with HOTS was fairly good. It was proved by the average score obtained by the students which are analyzing (75.78), evaluating (75.05) and creating (72.19). Furthermore, the most mistake made by the students was producing idea to solve problem.

Abstract

Abstrak   Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) mendeskripsikan kemampuan penggunaan context clues mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris UNP dalam membaca teks bahasa inggris, (2) mengetahui masalah-masalah yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa dan Satra Inggris UNP dalam menggunakan context clues saat membaca teks berbahasa inggris. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa tingkat III Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris tahun masuk 2011 Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni, Universitas Negeri Padang. Sampel penelitian ini berjumlah 20 orang yang dipilih menggunakan teknik cluster sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui dua instrumen yaitu tes context clues dan wawancara. Dalam tes context clues, mahasiswa diberikan tes yang berisikan 50 pertanyaan terkait 7 jenis context clues; definition & synonym, example/illustration, contrast, logic of passage, cause & effect, modifier, & sentence/paragraph clues dalam bentuk pilihan ganda dan isian dalam waktu 60 menit. Selain itu, di dalam wawancara ditanyakan beberapa pertanyaan yang digunakan untuk mengetahui permasalahan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan context clues. Data penelitian ini berupa interpretasi dari hasil tes mahasiswa dan wawancara terhadap mahasiswa. Dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa persentase kemampuan penggunaan context clues mahasiswa secara keseluruhan adalah 66.9% dengan interpretasi good atau baik. Masalah-masalah yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa dalam menggunakan context clues adalah beberapa kosa kata yang seharusnya menjadi petunjuk tapi malah tidak diketahui, keragu-raguan dalam menentukan jenis context clues, teks yang terlalu panjang dan susah dipahami, kecenderungan untuk menggunakan kamus dengan alasan lebih efektif, dan tidak menguasai konsep dasar dari jenis-jenis context clues.   Kata kunci: Context clues, reading text.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the condition this time. The teachers start to use multimedia to teach the students in the distance learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the perception of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP towards multimedia in English learning online. This research was a descriptive study using a quantitative approach with the data collection technique using a questionnaire. The sample in this study was 87 students of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. The data analysis technique used descriptive analysis was stated in the form of a percentage. The result showed the students' perception of SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP towards multimedia in learning English online. In detail, as many as; 8 students (9.20%) had very less positive perceptions, 17 students (19.54%) had less positive perceptions, 27 students (31.03%) had quite positive perceptions, 35 students (40, 23%) had positive perceptions, and no students had very positive perceptions. The highest frequency is 40.23%, which is in the positive category. Thus the students’ perception of the use of multimedia in learning English online at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP was positive.
