Abstract

The study aims to compare Indonesian and English proverbs with agricultural themes in terms of syntactic structures and lexical choices. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a comparative approach. The data consist of 20 agricultural English proverbs found on a website, meanwhile their Indonesian counterparts were obtained from various online sources. Although the dataset is limited in size, the selection process was carefully designed to reduce imbalance and potential bias. The selection and pairing of these proverbs were carried out by applying semantic justification to ensure that both languages reflect comparable meanings. The data were collected through documentation, organized into tables, and analyzed syntactically and lexically. The analysis reveals that both sets of proverbs employ simple, compound, and complex sentences, with complex sentences being the most dominant. The phenomenon indicates that agricultural proverbs in both languages tend to consist of layered wisdom and conditional reasoning, reflecting the complexity of human interaction with nature. Compound sentences, however, are the least frequently found. It suggests that proverbs seldom rely on coordination but rather emphasize subordination and cause-and-effect relations. Lexically, both languages share terms related to seasons, weather, agricultural tools, activities, animals, and plants; however, the specific choices differ due to the cultural and ecological contexts. English proverbs often include words such as "hay," "pig," and "hen" that reflect European farming practices and early industrial elements, which are not commonly found in Indonesian proverbs. Conversely, Indonesian proverbs employ traditional tools such as sumur (well), jala (net), and payung (umbrella), highlighting agrarian traditions and local livelihoods. The findings show how ecological realities and cultural practices shape linguistic representation in agricultural proverbs.

Abstract

The strategic establishment of an internationalized status has led many Indonesian universities to implement bilingual policies on campus public signage. However, a significant research gap exists regarding a systematic analysis of the translation quality in this domain, despite its crucial role in projecting the institution's global image. This study aims to investigate the phenomenon of Indonesian-English translation in the public signage at a state university in Surakarta. Employing qualitative research grounded in critical content analysis, data were collected through photographic documentation of 32 public signs. The analysis was framed within the theoretical lens of translation techniques and methods to assess the correspondence between source and target texts. The findings reveal the use of four translation methods: word-for-word, literal, adaptation, and free translation, with the literal method being the most predominant. In terms of translation techniques, adaptation was the most frequently employed, alongside linguistic compression, literal translation, and established equivalence. This indicates a concurrent tendency to retain source-language structures while modifying cultural elements, occasionally leading to inconsistency. The implication is that the university must employ a more considered approach, potentially involving linguistic experts, to ensure the signage achieves clarity, accuracy, and cultural appropriateness for an international audience

Abstract

Alginate is the product of processing seaweed Sargassum sp.  Alginate can be used as basic material in making edible film.  The aim of the research is to find the effect of alginate an montmorillonite concentration to the characteristics of edible film (the moisture content, solubility, thickness, tensile strength, elongation, water vapor transmission rate, opacity measurement, and color).  This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) pattern factorials by a Factor of A is the level alginate (1,00%; 1,25%; and 1,50%) and Factors B is the level montmorillonite (0,50%; 1,00%; and 1,50%) with 3 repetitions. The measured parameters were the moisture content, solubility, thickness, tensile strength, elongation, water vapor transmission rate, opacity measurement, and color. Based on the study on the characteristics of alginate-montmorillonite composite edible film it can be concluded that the best product based on chemical and mechanical test results is edible film made with 1.50% alginate concentration with 1.00% montmorillonite concentration resulting in a moisture content of 18.76%, solubility of 100%, thickness of 0.0368 mm, tensile strength of 32.27 MPa, percent of elongation of 47.66%, water vapor transmission rate of 12,04 g/m2/hours, opacity measurement of 3.23 YC / 2, L color test of 91.25, color test a equals -1.05, and color test b is 4.47.  The montmorillonite concentration had no effect (P≥0.05) on the solubility value, and color test a is (greeness), but it had a very significant effect (P ≤0.01) on the value of thickness, percent elongation, water vapor transmission rate, and opacity value

Abstract

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic seems to give us blessing disguise to the size of English vocabulary, one of which is blends. This study aims at describing the types and meanings of English blends found during the Covid-19 pandemic by using blends classification from Mattiello’s theory i.e. morphotatic as well as morphological and graphic. This research belongs to a descriptive qualitative study. The research data are English blends found in 9 articles on websites. The data collection techniques used in this research are documentation and content analysis. Technic of data analysis is carried out in three stages, namely (1) data reduction which is carried out when there are same data, (2) data display which is presented in table, (3) drawing conclusions. The researchers found 49 data of English blends. Morphotactically, the researchers found 11 total blends (with 2 blends forming processes) and 38 partial blends (with 3 blends forming processes). Morphologically and graphically, the researchers found 7 overlapping blends and 42 non-overlapping blends.
