Abstract

This study aims to develop biology teaching materials based on the local potential of rice farming in Karawang district to enhance students' environmental literacy and problem-solving skills. This study employed a research and development model using the ADDIE framework. The research was conducted in a junior high school in Karawang with a total sample of 70 students, consisting of 35 students in the experimental class and 35 students in the control class. The instruments used in this study included teaching materials based on local agricultural potential in Karawang, environmental literacy tests, and problem-solving assessments. T-test validation analysis and N-gain calculation were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching materials. The results showed that the average environmental literacy score of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class, and the problem-solving ability results also indicated that the average score of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class. These findings suggest that the developed local potential-based teaching materials can effectively improve the environmental literacy and problem-solving skills of junior high school students.

Abstract

A student's motivation influences students' self-regulatory abilities, and significantly impacts their attitude towards scientific concepts, contributing to a more enriched and successful learning experience. This research explores the correlation between motivation and self-regulation in science learning among junior high school students. The research methodology employed in this study adopts a quantitative approach with a survey research design. This research found that the average learning goal orientation is 4.12, task value is 3.97, and self-efficacy is 3.75. The total average for the dimensions of motivation and self-regulation is 3.95 and 3.89 respectively. These scores indicate that the motivation and self-regulation in science learning among junior high school students are categorized at a high level. Furthermore, there is a significant correlation between motivation dimensions (learning goal orientation, task value, and self-efficacy) and self-regulation in science learning. Based on the students’ answers to open-ended questions, they are motivated to learn science because learning science is interesting and fun. Meanwhile, students who feel unmotivated to learn science find it challenging, especially when dealing with formulas and calculations. However, despite the lessons' difficulty, students still try to study because most of them desire to achieve good grades in science lessons.

Abstract

Science literacy in Indonesia is still a big challenge, as evidenced by the low scores in the latest PISA results. Low science literacy is caused by several factors including learning that is not contextualised and less relevant to everyday life. In addition, student involvement in learning is also very influential on the success of learning. Therefore, this study was conducted to measure the effectiveness of Guided Inquiry learning method combined with Nearpod learning media in improving students' science literacy. The study used a pre-experimental approach with a ‘one group pre-test post-test’ design model. The population in this study was class X students at SMA Negeri 1 Cimahi consisting of 11 classes. The sampling process was carried out randomly (random sampling), namely class X-11 which totalled 29 students. The results showed that the Guided Inquiry learning method combined with Nearpod learning media was effective in improving students' science literacy, especially in the aspects of designing and evaluating scientific investigations on environmental change material. ABSTRAKLiterasi sains di Indonesia masih menjadi tantangan besar, sebagaimana dibuktikan oleh skor yang masih rendah pada hasil PISA terbaru. Rendahnya literasi sains disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor diantaranya adalah pembelajaran yang tidak kontekstual dan kurang relevan dengan kehidupan sehari-hari. Selain itu keterlibatan siswa dalam pembelajaran juga sangat berpengaruh terhadap keberhasilan pembelajaran. Oleh karena itu penelitian ini dilaksanakan yang bertujuan untuk mengukur efektivitas metode pembelajaran Guided Inquiry yang dipadukan dengan media pembelajaran Nearpod dalam meningkatkan literasi sains siswa. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan pre-eksperimental dengan model desain "one group pre-test post-test". Populasi dalam penelitian ini yaitu siswa kelas X di SMA Negeri 1 Cimahi yang terdiri dari 11 kelas. Proses pengambilan sampel dilaksanakan secara acak (random sampling) yaitu kelas X-11 yang berjumlah 29 siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode pembelajaran Guided Inquiry dikombinasikan dengan media pembelajaran Nearpod efektif dalam meningkatkan literasi sains siswa, khususnya pada aspek merancang dan mengevaluasi penyelidikan ilmiah pada materi perubahan lingkungan.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine whether there is a difference in students' creative thinking skills before and after problem-based learning with scaffolding . The instruments used in this study were a creative thinking skills test instrument and a non-test instrument consisting of an observation sheet and a student response questionnaire. The results of statistical tests showed a significant difference in creative thinking skills after problem-based learning with scaffolding . This is also indicated by the increase in test results in the moderate category in the control class by 53% and in the experimental class by 72% in the same category, resulting in a gain value of 0.33 (moderate). In addition, there was a positive response to problem-based learning with scaffolding  as seen in the average percentage of agreement in student responses, namely 84%, which is included in the very good category

Abstract

In addressing environmental issues, it is important to measure STEM literacy achievement to increase students' environmental awareness and equip them with the necessary skills to contribute to finding solutions. This research aims to determine the profile of students' STEM literacy achievement in Bandung regarding environmental change issues. The research method used is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The research subjects comprised 193 tenth-grade students selected from SMA Negeri 1 Bandung, SMA Negeri 4 Bandung, and SMA Negeri 9 Bandung for the 2023/2024 academic year, chosen through simple random sampling. The research instrument consisted of 40 multiple-choice questions on environmental change issues, covering seven STEM literacy indicators: explaining phenomena scientifically, evaluating and designing scientific investigations, interpreting data and evidence scientifically, understanding technological principles, developing solutions to achieve goals, formulating situations mathematically, and using concepts, facts, procedures, or reasoning. Data analysis was conducted by calculating the average score of students' STEM literacy achievement per indicator as a percentage. The research results indicate that the percentage of students' STEM literacy achievement is 70%, categorized as moderate. The percentages per STEM literacy indicator are as follows: explaining phenomena scientifically at 71%, evaluating and designing scientific investigations at 61%, interpreting data and evidence scientifically at 73%, understanding technological principles at 76%, developing solutions to achieve goals at 74%, formulating situations mathematically at 61%, and using concepts, facts, procedures, or reasoning at 61%.

Abstract

Students’ critical thinking skills on the digestive system topic remain low, indicating the need for learning experiences that utilize authentic data. This study examined the effectiveness of integrating the MyFitnessPal application into a Problem Based Learning (PBL) model to improve senior high school students’ critical thinking skills. Using a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design with 35 participants, data were collected through a critical thinking test based on Facione’s indicators and analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, Effect size, and N-Gain. The findings show a significant improvement in critical thinking (p = 0.000) with a large Effect size (r = 0.76). The N-Gain score of 0.43 indicates a moderate improvement following the MyFitnessPal-integrated PBL intervention. These results highlight that incorporating nutrition-tracking applications as authentic data sources within PBL can enhance data literacy and support the development of critical thinking in biology learning. Abstrak. Kemampuan berpikir kritis pada materi Sistem Pencernaan masih rendah, sehingga diperlukan pembelajaran yang memberikan pengalaman autentik dan berorientasi data. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis efektivitas integrasi aplikasi MyFitnessPal dalam model Problem Based Learning (PBL) terhadap peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa SMA. Penelitian menggunakan desain One Group Pretest–Posttest dengan sampel 35 siswa. Instrumen berupa tes berpikir kritis berdasarkan indikator Facione, dianalisis menggunakan uji Shapiro–Wilk, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, Effect size, dan N-Gain. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan kemampuan berpikir kritis (p = 0,000) dengan Effect size besar (r = 0,76). Nilai N-Gain sebesar 0,43 berada pada kategori sedang, menunjukkan peningkatan yang konsisten setelah penerapan PBL terintegrasi MyFitnessPal. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi pelacakan gizi sebagai sumber data autentik dalam PBL dapat memperkuat literasi data dan mendukung berkembangnya kemampuan berpikir kritis pada pembelajaran Biologi.

Abstract

Science education in Indonesia still faces challenges in developing students’ application skills, as shown by PISA 2022 where only 22% of Indonesian students reached the applicative level, below the OECD average of 49%. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of integrating Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Experiential Learning (EL) in improving students’ application skills in the excretory system topic. A quasi-experimental One Group Pretest–Posttest design was applied to eighth-grade students at a junior high school in West Java during the 2025/2026 academic year. Research instruments included application skill tests, observation sheets to assess fidelity of implementation, and student response questionnaires. Data were analyzed using N-Gain scores and descriptive statistics. The results indicated a significant improvement in application skills with an average N-Gain score in the medium category. Observation results showed high fidelity of implementation, while student responses revealed positive perceptions of the integrated model, emphasizing its contextual and relevant nature. Abstrak. Pendidikan sains di Indonesia masih menghadapi tantangan dalam mengembangkan keterampilan aplikatif siswa, sebagaimana ditunjukkan oleh hasil PISA 2022 yang menempatkan hanya 22% siswa Indonesia pada level aplikatif, di bawah rata-rata OECD sebesar 49%. Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji efektivitas integrasi Problem Based Learning (PBL) dan Experiential Learning (EL) dalam meningkatkan keterampilan aplikatif siswa pada materi sistem ekskresi. Metode penelitian menggunakan desain kuasi-eksperimen One Group Pretest–Posttest dengan melibatkan siswa kelas VIII di salah satu sekolah menengah pertama di Jawa Barat tahun ajaran 2025/2026. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes keterampilan aplikatif, lembar observasi fidelitas implementasi, dan angket respon siswa. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan skor N-Gain dan statistik deskriptif. Hasil menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan keterampilan aplikatif dengan rata-rata skor N-Gain kategori sedang. Observasi mengindikasikan fidelitas implementasi tinggi, sedangkan respon siswa menunjukkan persepsi positif terhadap model yang dinilai kontekstual dan relevan dengan kehidupan sehari-hari.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas inovasi pembelajaran Problem-Based Liveworksheets dalam meningkatkan keterampilan problem solving siswa pada materi keanekaragaman hayati. Inovasi ini mengintegrasikan tahapan Problem-Based Learning (PBL) dengan lembar kerja digital interaktif serta pemanfaatan data dari IUCN Red List. Penelitian menggunakan metode pra-eksperimen dengan desain One-Group Pretest–Posttest yang melibatkan 36 siswa kelas X. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa tes problem solving yang dikembangkan berdasarkan empat indikator. Data dianalisis menggunakan box plot, persentase perubahan skor, dan perhitungan N-gain untuk melihat perkembangan kemampuan siswa setelah perlakuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan problem solving siswa mengalami peningkatan setelah mengikuti pembelajaran Problem-Based Liveworksheets. Peningkatan ini tampak pada distribusi skor yang pretest dan posttest, serta tercermin pada seluruh indikator keterampilan problem solving. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Problem-Based Liveworksheets merupakan pembelajaran yang efektif untuk meningkatkan keterampilan problem solving siswa dalam pembelajaran biologi, khususnya pada materi yang menuntut kemampuan analitis dan berpikir kritis.

Abstract

Kidney health literacy among adolescents remains under-examined within specific biology topics, particularly in eastern Indonesia. This study investigated self-reported kidney health literacy in biology learning among 108 eleventh-grade students (43 males, 65 females) from two senior high school in Sentani, Jayapura Regency, Papua, Indonesia. The instrument was adapted from the attitude questionnaire component of the kidney health literacy instrument developed by Wahyuni and Subiantoro (2024), covering four indicators: accessing, understanding, appraising, and applying kidney health information. Results showed that students were predominantly distributed across the Problematic (46.3%) and Sufficient (45.4%) categories. A one-sample t-test indicates that the population mean index did not differ significantly from the upper boundary of the Problematic category (M = 33.20, SD = 4.98; p = .680). Appraising was the weakest and most variable indicator (M = 30.86, SD = 7.58), while applying was the strongest (M = 34.95). No significant gender differences emerged from the Chi-Square, Fisher’s Exact,, and Independent Samples T-Tests, although female students showed greater score variability (SD = 5.74 vs. 3.61). K-Means cluster analysis identified three learner profiles: Proficient (23.1%), Underdeveloped (40.7%), and Transitional (36.1%). Appraising produced the highest F-value (F = 169.131), indicating that this indicator contributed most strongly to between-cluster differentiation. These findings suggest that appraising represents the most critical gap in students’ kidney health literacy and should be an explicit instructional target in biology learning on the human excretory system.

Abstract

The growing emphasis on conceptual understanding has led to increasing interest in mental models within science education. Despite this development, studies that systematically map research trends, thematic structures, and focal areas across high school and university contexts remain limited. This study examines the evolution of mental model research in science learning by combining bibliometric analysis with a systematic review. Data were drawn from the Scopus database (2015–2025), resulting in 96 articles for bibliometric mapping and 14 articles for in-depth review focused on biology education. The findings indicate a steady rise in publications, with dominant themes centered on conceptual understanding, misconceptions, and assessment development, particularly in physics and chemistry. In contrast, research in biology education remains relatively scarce and largely descriptive, with limited attention to instructional interventions targeting mental model reconstruction. These results underscore the need for studies integrating multiple representations and continuous diagnostic assessment to foster more meaningful biology learning. Model Mental dalam Pembelajaran Sains di Kalangan Siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas dan Universitas: Tinjauan Bibliometrik dan Sistematis ABSTRAK: Peningkatan perhatian terhadap pemahaman konseptual mendorong berkembangnya kajian model mental dalam pendidikan sains. Meskipun demikian, penelitian yang secara sistematis memetakan tren, struktur tematik, dan fokus kajian pada jenjang sekolah menengah dan perguruan tinggi masih terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji perkembangan riset model mental dalam pembelajaran sains melalui kombinasi analisis bibliometrik dan tinjauan sistematis. Data diperoleh dari basis data Scopus (2015–2025), menghasilkan 96 artikel untuk pemetaan bibliometrik dan 14 artikel untuk kajian mendalam yang berfokus pada pembelajaran biologi. Hasil menunjukkan adanya peningkatan publikasi yang konsisten, dengan tema dominan meliputi pemahaman konseptual, miskonsepsi, dan pengembangan asesmen, khususnya pada bidang fisika dan kimia. Sebaliknya, penelitian pada pembelajaran biologi masih relatif terbatas dan cenderung deskriptif, serta belum banyak mengembangkan intervensi yang menargetkan rekonstruksi model mental. Temuan ini menegaskan perlunya integrasi representasi multipel dan asesmen diagnostik berkelanjutan.
