Abstract

This study examines the meaning of awliya’ in the official Indonesian Qur’anic translation published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) across three editions: the Jamunu Edition, the 2002 Revised Edition, and the 2019 Revised Edition. It focuses on the diversity of Indonesian renderings of awliya’ across Qur’anic verses and investigates the factors underlying these translational variations, particularly in socially sensitive passages such as Q 5:51 (al-Ma’idah). The research employs a qualitative descriptive-analytic approach using library research. Primary data consist of the three Kemenag translation editions, while secondary data include classical and contemporary Qur’anic commentaries, Qur’anic semantic studies, and translation theory literature. Data are analyzed through thematic (maudhu‘i) exegesis, content analysis, and a semantic-contextual approach (Izutsu), taking into account siyaq al-ayah (textual context) and asbab al-nuzul (occasions of revelation). The findings demonstrate that awliya’ is polysemous, and therefore Kemenag adopts context-sensitive renderings such as leaders, protectors/helpers, close loyal friends, and allies. Differences across editions are shaped by (1) linguistic factors (polysemy), (2) verse context, (3) exegetical assumptions informing translation choices, (4) socio-political considerations and the discourse of religious moderation, and (5) an educational orientation toward non-specialist readers. The study concludes that translational variation can enrich readers’ understanding when supported by exegetical literacy, yet it may also generate misleading generalizations if read literally without contextual guidance.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Arabic morphology plays a crucial role in understanding the grammatical and semantic structure of the Qur’anic language. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the patterns, meanings, functions, and syntactic roles of ism fāʿil in Surah al-Anfāl and explore its implications for Arabic grammar instruction. Method: This research adopts a qualitative approach with a library research method. The primary data source is the Qur'anic text of Surah al-Anfāl, supported by classical linguistic commentaries. The study identifies and classifies ism fāʿil based on morphological patterns (wazn), analyzes their syntactic functions in the verses, and evaluates their grammatical activity (i.e., whether they act as verbs in raising objects). Furthermore, this study discusses how these findings can be adapted into Arabic teaching using an inductive approach. Results and Discussion: The study found 35 occurrences of ism fāʿil in six different morphological patterns, with فَاعِلٌ as the most frequent. Many forms perform grammatical actions similar to verbs. Most ism fāʿil function as mubtada’, khabar, or faʿil in nominal and verbal sentences. This study fills a gap in the literature by combining linguistic analysis with pedagogical application using inductive teaching models. Conclusions and Implications: The use of Qur’anic texts for teaching Arabic morphology, especially through inductive methods, enhances both linguistic understanding and spiritual engagement. Future studies should explore other derived noun forms across different surahs using similar models.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the implementation of prophetic intelligence in Islamic education as a strategy for building anti-corruption character in the Greater Solo area, by highlighting its contribution to the achievement of Islam and the SDGs.  Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research is based on the concept of prophetic intelligence that combines rationality, spirituality, and morality as the basis of ethical awareness. Literature review: Literature review confirms that prophetic Islamic education plays an important role in instilling ethical and spiritual values as a measure to prevent corruption. Several studies have shown that the integration of prophetic values in the Islamic education curriculum can form a culture of honesty, social responsibility, and institutional transparency. Methods: This study uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to explore the meaning of teachers' experiences in implementing prophetic values in Islamic educational institutions in Solo Raya. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation studies, then analyzed with Miles and Huberman's interactive model that included data reduction, presentation, and verification. Results: The results of the study show that the implementation of prophetic intelligence is effective in strengthening integrity, honesty, and accountability in the educational environment. Teachers act as an ethical bridge between spirituality and modern governance, internalizing prophetic values through example, moral habituation, and ethical reflection. Prophetic Islamic education has been proven to be able to suppress corrupt behavior and foster a culture of social responsibility. Implications: The integration of prophetic values in Islamic education has a direct impact on the establishment of educational institutions that are transparent, ethical, and just, as well as serving as a moral model for the wider community. Novelty: This study examines applying prophetic intelligence in Islamic education as an anti-corruption character strategy by integrating prophetic values into curricula, linking it to SDG 4 and SDG 16 an area still underexplored.

Abstract

This paper discussed the motives of wearing niqab among Muslim women. Most of Muslim women wear niqab because of religious motives. However, the development of niqab recently brings up a variety of colours and models. This diversity indicates different motives among Muslim women in wearing niqab. Surveying IAIN Surakarta’s students who wear niqab, this research elaborated the relationship between their motives of wearing niqab and their understanding of Islamic teaching about niqab. The research found that even though the main motive to wear niqab is to observe religious teaching, IAIN Surakarta’s students who wear niqab also consider the practice for safety reasons. They also realize that wearing niqab is not an obligation in Islam and follow schools which consider it as preferable (sunah).

Abstract

Objective: This article aims to analyze the dynamics of the translation of the terms awliya, jihad, and kafir in the 2002 and 2019 editions of the Ministry of Religion's Al-Quran Translation. This study highlights the changing meaning and strategy of translation in response to Indonesia's social and political context. The main focus is directed at the theological and social implications of the choice of translation diction. Theoretical framework: This study uses Quranic semantics, contextual interpretation, and Qur'anic translation theory as an analytical framework. Quranic semantics maps the field of meaning of terms, contextual interpretation emphasizes historical and contemporary contexts, while translation theory assesses the strategy of translation of meaning. All three are used integratively to read the relationship between text and context. Literature review: Previous studies of the translation of the Qur'an in Indonesia have generally dealt with linguistic or historical aspects separately. Comparative studies across editions of official translations with a focus on sensitive terms are still limited. This article fills this gap by systematically linking linguistic analysis, interpretation, and social dynamics. Methods: This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach based on literature studies. The data was analyzed through searching for verses containing the terms awliya, jihad, and kafir in the 2002 and 2019 editions of the translation. The analysis was carried out using semantic approaches, contextual interpretation, and translation theory. Results: There is a shift in translation from a literal approach to a contextual and moderate approach. The term awliya is interpreted more relationally, jihad is contextually explained to prevent violence, and kafir is recontextualized to "disobedient" or "kufr". These changes reflect the response to Indonesia's social sensitivities. Implications: Theoretically, these findings confirm the translation of the Qur'an as a dynamic and contextual practice of interpretation. In practical terms, this study supports the development of more accurate and moderate translations. Another implication is the strengthening of religious moderation and harmonization between religious communities. Novelty: The novelty of this article lies in a comparative analysis across the official translation editions of the Ministry of Religion. The focus on three sensitive Quranic terms, combined with Indonesia's socio-political context. Integrative approaches to semantics, interpretation, and translation are the main methodological contributions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the urgency and strategies for developing Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions in Arabic language learning in the era of 21st-century skills. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method, with data sources derived from books, scholarly journal articles, and relevant academic documents. Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques, while data analysis used a descriptive-analytical method. The results indicate that the development of HOTS-based questions in Arabic language learning is highly urgent in addressing the demands of 21st-century skills, which include critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. From the perspective of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy, HOTS is positioned at higher cognitive levels, namely analyzing (C4), evaluating (C5), and creating (C6), which encourage students to think more deeply and critically. The strategies for developing HOTS questions include analyzing basic competencies, constructing test blueprints, utilizing contextual stimuli, designing items based on higher-order cognitive levels, and developing scoring guidelines. The implementation of these strategies not only improves the quality of assessment but also contributes to the development of students’ 21st-century skills comprehensively. Therefore, the development of HOTS questions in Arabic language learning plays a strategic role in enhancing the quality of education and preparing students to face global challenges in the future.
