Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diazotrophic endophytic bacteria inoculation in liquid and microbeads formulations on the vegetative growth of maize (Zea mays L.). The experiment was conducted from September 2025 to March 2026 at the Soil Biology Laboratory and Ciparanje Experimental Field, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. The study used a Randomized Block Design consisting of seven treatments and four replications. Treatments included liquid and microbeads biofertilizers containing Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus strain GD 3-1, Paraburkholderia sp. strain GD 12-2, and their consortium. Observed parameters included plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, intensity of plant pest disturbance, and stem endophytic bacterial population. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Scott-Knott test at a 5% significance level using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 21. The results showed that biofertilizer application significantly affected maize growth at the late vegetative stage. Liquid formulation of G. diazotrophicus produced the highest plant height at 8 weeks after planting, while microbeads formulation showed more stable growth responses during the observation period. Biofertilizer treatments also increased leaf area and stem endophytic bacterial population compared with the control treatment. In addition, inoculated plants showed better tolerance to pest attacks during the vegetative stage. Overall, the application of diazotrophic endophytic bacteria, particularly G. diazotrophicus, demonstrated potential to improve maize vegetative growth and support sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract

Efforts to increase the availability of macronutrients in soil have relied on inorganic fertilization, particularly NPK fertilizers. However, global challenges in the fertilizer raw material supply chain, including price fluctuations and availability, are driving the need for more efficient and sustainable fertilizer alternatives.  The  field experiment was conducted in Baruajak, Lembang District, West Java, Indonesia, to evaluate the effectiveness of Bacillus-coated NPK fertilizer on broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) growth, nutrient status, rhizosphere Bacillus population, yield, and flower quality. The experiment used a randomized complete block design with 15 fertilizer treatments and three replications. Treatments consisted of two coated NPK formulations, Formula C (0.4% Bacillus consortium + 0.2% zeolite) and Formula G (0.2% Bacillus consortium + 0.4% zeolite), applied once or twice at 100%, 75%, and 50% of the recommended NPK dose, and conventional NPK fertilizer at the same dose levels. The recommended NPK dose for broccoli was 300 kg ha⁻¹. Plant growth, chlorophyll content, shoot biomass, nutrient concentration and uptake, soil nutrient status, rhizosphere Bacillus population, flower yield, flower diameter, and vitamin B3 and K contents were observed. The results showed that Bacillus-coated NPK fertilizer generally improved vegetative growth compared with conventional NPK fertilizer. Formula G applied once at 100% recommended NPK dosage produced the highest flower weight and diameter, while Formula C applied once at 75% resulted in the highest vitamin B3 and vitamin K contents. The coated NPK fertilizer maintained shoot N, P, and K concentrations comparable to those of conventional NPK and showed potential to partially or fully replace conventional NPK in broccoli cultivation.

Abstract

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) ‘Haruhi’ is a subtropical plant that is being cultivated in Indonesia. High temperatures in tropical climates could decrease strawberry yield and fruit quality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of light, melatonin, potassium fertilizers, and their interactions on the yield and fruit quality of ‘Haruhi’ strawberry. This research was conducted from April to June 2024 at the Bale Tatanen, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. A split-plot design was used, with lighting treatment as the main plot and melatonin and potassium fertilizer treatments as the subplot. Lighting treatments consisted of supplemental LED lighting and natural light (non-LED). Subplot treatments included control, 100 μM melatonin, 2 g L⁻¹ potassium fertilizer, and their combination. The results showed that the combination of non-LED lighting with melatonin and potassium fertilizer produced the best fruit diameter and fruit weight. Under non-LED lighting, melatonin treatment resulted in the highest total soluble solids, while the control treatment produced the highest number of flowers. The interaction between LED lighting and melatonin resulted in the highest fruit number. Non-LED lighting alone also produced the best plant height, leaf number, and fruit length. Potassium fertilizer alone resulted in the highest leaf number, while the control treatment produced the highest plant height.
