Abstract

Oil palm plays an important role in Indonesian economy. Development of palm oil supply chain creates a large number of employment, reduces poverty, increases foreign exchange earnings, and improves rural welfare. However, oil palm expansion has been claimed to be the source of deforestation, biodiversity loss, GHG emision, land and forest fires and land conflicts. Some private and non-governmental organizations have established a certification system, “the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil”, to mitigate the negative impacts of oil palm production. All oil palm growers have to comply with the Principle and Criteria of RSPO to be included in the global market. However, the smallholders are the most vulnerable party to meet the standard because of their limited access to various inputs, finance, and information. Certification is a new challenge for smallholders in a global oil palm supply chain. The objective of this study is to analyse farmers’ perception on RSPO certification. This research use the likert scale to measure farmers’ perception. The data were collected through a survey on the farmers. The size of sample selected from the population are 59 independent smallholders. The result shows that the farmers’ perception on certification is “very good”. There are an increasing awareness of the farmers on sustainable oil palm production. The study also found that most of the farmers participate in the process of certification. However, the implementation of the Principles and Criteria carried out by oil palm growers is still below the certification standard i.e., only 57.17%. Keywords : Oil palm, Perception, RSPO and independent smallholder.

Abstract

Increasing demand for oil palm fruit and higher price of fresh fruit bunches have motivated huge investors and farmers to increase their oil palm production. Since land expansion was considered to be cheaper and easier to implement than intensification, new planting become more populer in order to increase oil palm production. However, there are many negative impacts following the expansion of oil palm plantation, such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, land degradation, GHG emission, and land conflicts. A number of private and non-governmental institutions have created certification system to halt the destruction of the forest and environtment. All oil palm products must comply to the standard to be included in the supply chain. This situation becomes a dilemma for oil palm smallholders. The conversion from convensional to sustainable oil palm production needs a huge of costs while smallholders have less access to various aspect related to oil palm production including access to finance. The objective of this study is to analyse the existing performance of oil palm smallholders including good agricultural practices, best management practices, farm income, and household income. This study use a survey method to collect primary data on 83 sample in the village. The result shows that the majority of the smallholders do not apply best practices in their plantation. Consequently, the quantity and quality of their oil palm fuits are considerably low. A lot of work have to be done if the smallholders would like to obtain certification. Keywords :good agricultural practices, farmincome, household income, certification

Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis jacq) is one of profitable crops in Riau Province. Oil palm plantations have been cultivated by various type of business including large enterprises and smallholders. Oil palm has been grown by a large number of population in the Province of Riau.  In the village of Sei Lambu Makmur, District of Tapung, Regency of Kampar, the oil palm plantation are at the end of the economic life . To maintain sustainable production the oil palm trees should be replanted. There are three alternative replanting models i.e., conventional, underplanting, and conventional with intercropping. Conventional and underplanting are possible models for smallholders and mill. This aim of this research is to analyse the most suitable model for the condition of the smallholders. Primary data was collected by direct interview with oil palm smallholders while secondary data was obtained from relevant agencies. This study analysis the feasibility of the replanting models by using four investment criteria is NPV, IRR , Net B/C and sensitivity analysis. The results show that underplanting is the most suitable model for smallholder. However, the conventional model is the most efficient model from the mill’s point of view.   Keyword: oil palm, replanting model, NPV, IRR, sensitivity analysis

Abstract

The expansion of palm oil plantations has not only had a positive impact but alsovarious negative impacts. International markets require the management andprocessing of palm oil plantations to be responsible by taking account ofenvironmental, social, and economic aspects. Palm oil produced must be asustainable product (sustainable) to be accepted in the international market. Thisthen spawned a concept of sustainable palm oil by a body called the Roundtable onSustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The purpose of this study was to analyze the gapbetween the RSPO criteria standards and the practices of planters, analyze thecapabilities and challenges of Independent smallholders to obtain RSPOcertification. This research uses descriptive analysis. The results of the researchindicate that best practices or application of RSPO principles to independentSmallholders palm oil planters has reached 75%, from 138 indicators there are 13indicators that become findings, from 13 indicators findings there are 5 majorindicators. Asosiasi Mandiri ability to be able to obtain RSPO certification ie (1)Planters Association has been well organized (2) have understanding or awarenessof the importance of RSPO certification objectives (3) has fulfilled the 6 principles ofthe 8 principles of the RSPO P & C standard (4) supported by non-governmentalorganizations, and challenges faced by (1) generally low levels of plantationeducation (2) Principles 4 and 5 that have not met the RSPO P & C standards (3)associations require substantial fees for RSPO certification. To complete the fivemajor indicators, the Association requires training or assistance in recording eachcultivation activity especially on the use of pesticides, training and the formation of ateam of spray units (TUS) and empowered in any plantation maintenance activities, manufacture of special warehouses for pesticide storage and create special disposalsites or looking for distributors of processing or recycling of pesticide waste, andconducting annual medical monitoring programs specific to pesticide operators.

Abstract

Agricultural sector than as producers of renewable energy as well as a potentialuser. The calculation of the balance between production and use of renewableenergy in the agricultural sector needs to be studied simultaneously, in line withtechnological developments in energy and agriculture. This evaluation will be usefulto assess the efficiency of the agribusiness in Indonesia in terms of increasingnational agricultural productivity and environmental conservation through renewableenergy. Agricultural products that have the potential to be used as an oil substitute isbiodiesel. Apart from a fairly competitive selling point, biodiesel is also consideredenvironmentally friendly and a renewable energy because it uses raw materials fromagricultural products. During the last five-year period in which oil prices soar, theprice of biodiesel is lower to the substitution of petroleum products and the potentialand feasible to produce. The results of the NPV (Rp 44.7 billion) and IRR (38.94percent) in this study demonstrate the feasibility of biodiesel production.Keyword : feasibility study, biodiesel, renewable energy, cpo (crude palm oil).

Abstract

Porang agribusiness has prospects to be developed because porang is a plant that has various benefits. Porang farming in recent years has only been carried out by farmers in Pekanbaru City. Porang farming certainly has its own challenges if it is planted in Riau, especially in Pekanbaru City. Farmers hope that porang farming can provide maximum profit. This study aims to: (a) Analyze the prospects for developing porang agribusiness in Pekanbaru City and (b) Analyze porang farming in Pekanbaru City. This research was conducted from February 2021 to December 2021. Descriptive rating scale analysis and farming analysis were applied in this study to analyze the prospects for the development of porang agribusiness in Pekanbaru City. The results of this study indicate that the prospect of developing porang agribusiness in Pekanbaru City is prospective and can provide benefits. This is because porang can adapt well in Pekanbaru City if farmers cultivate porang according to the recommendations of Good Agricultural Practice for Food Crops (Ministry of Agriculture Number 48 of 2006) and Good Agricultural Practice of Porang Cultivation (Department of Agriculture Mojokerto in 2020), although the recommendations for porang cultivation are specifically for Riau doesn't exist yet.

Abstract

The ability of palm oil to produce vegetable oil with the highest oil productivity per hectare and cheaper price than other vegetable oils has made palm oil the most popular and widely consumed vegetable oil available today and can be produced throughout the year. Despite generating economic benefits, the Indonesian oil industry has been heavily criticized from within and abroad. Critics argue that the benefits of palm oil are generated at the expense of forests and forest-dependent rural communities, resulting in large greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from land conversion and destructive habitats rich in biodiversity. The development of oil palm agribusiness should be carried out with due observance of the sustainability aspect. This study aimed to measure and compare practices undertaken in the field with ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) standards. This research was conducted by collecting primary data and secondary data in the form of information and conducting interview process to self-employed oil palm smallholders. The result of the research shows that the management of independent oil palm plantation in Sawit Jaya Cooperation has not applied ISPO Certification standard. Level of application of Principles and Criteria of ISPO in self-supporting smallholders in Sawit Jaya Cooperation is still low, that is only 42% indicator that has been fulfilled

Abstract

The study investigated the relationship between the UV Index and measurements of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation to evaluate the effectiveness of the UV Index in predicting and understanding UV radiation at the surface. The implications of this study are significant for public health policies and UV protection strategies. This study used a variety of statistical analyses and modelling techniques, including ANOVA, Naive Bayes classification, decision trees, artificial neural networks, support vector machines (SVM), and k-means clustering, to examine relationships and predict UV Index values. ANOVA analysis showed a significant relationship between the UV Index and UVA and UVB measurements. Prediction models such as Naive Bayes classification, decision trees, and artificial neural networks showed variability in their accuracy. Notably, SVM showed a high degree of accuracy in predicting UV Index values, while k-means clustering effectively clustered the data based on similarities in UV Index and UV measurements. These findings confirm that the UV Index is a reliable indicator for predicting and understanding UV radiation levels at the Earth's surface. This research underscores the importance of developing more accurate and precise UV Index prediction models. Further investigation is essential to understand the temporal variations and environmental impacts on the UV Index, as well as the broader implications of UV exposure on public health. This study lays a strong foundation for the development of early warning systems and more effective UV protection strategies, ultimately improving public health outcomes and safety measures against UV radiation.
