Abstract

Oil palm plays an important role in Indonesian economy. Development of palm oil supply chain creates a large number of employment, reduces poverty, increases foreign exchange earnings, and improves rural welfare. However, oil palm expansion has been claimed to be the source of deforestation, biodiversity loss, GHG emision, land and forest fires and land conflicts. Some private and non-governmental organizations have established a certification system, “the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil”, to mitigate the negative impacts of oil palm production. All oil palm growers have to comply with the Principle and Criteria of RSPO to be included in the global market. However, the smallholders are the most vulnerable party to meet the standard because of their limited access to various inputs, finance, and information. Certification is a new challenge for smallholders in a global oil palm supply chain. The objective of this study is to analyse farmers’ perception on RSPO certification. This research use the likert scale to measure farmers’ perception. The data were collected through a survey on the farmers. The size of sample selected from the population are 59 independent smallholders. The result shows that the farmers’ perception on certification is “very good”. There are an increasing awareness of the farmers on sustainable oil palm production. The study also found that most of the farmers participate in the process of certification. However, the implementation of the Principles and Criteria carried out by oil palm growers is still below the certification standard i.e., only 65,45%. Keywords : Oil palm, Perception, RSPO and independent smallholder.

Abstract

The success of a business can be measured by its financial performance. Information on financial performance is very important because it will be able to evaluate financial aspects that improve financial performance and avoid the business from the threat of bankruptcy. The objective of this study is to analyse financial performance of oil palm smallholders plantation in Pelalawan Regency. Then, a comparative study amongs different types of smallholders was also implemented. Three types of smallholder plantation are examined in this study, i.e., KKPA, PIR and Swadaya. Four financial performance indicators have been used in this analyses such as independent sample t test of profitability ratio, liquidity ratio, solvability ratio, and effectivity ratio. The results shows that the smallholders have relatively good financial performance. There is no significant difference in income between KKPA and PIR while the income is significantly different between scheme smallholders (KKPA and PIR) and Independent smallhorders.   Keyword : financial performance, profitability, liquidity, solvability, effectivity

Abstract

Abstract In the last decade, there has been a spate of interest in how to reduce negative impacts of rapid oil palm plantation expansion caused by increasing demand for crude palm oil and fresh fruit bunches. Some international institutions proposed a certification program to ensure a sustainable oil palm production. However, certification become a huge challenge for oil palm smallholders. There are some barriers that the farmers face in accesing inputs, financial and marketing. The purpose of the present study was to analyse oil palm smallholders’ performance and challenges toward certification issues in palm oil supply chain. A survey was conducted to collect data in two types of smallholders, i.e. scheme and independent smallholders. The number of samples selected from the population is 150 samples consist of 70 independent smallholders’ samples and 80 scheme smallholders’ samples. The study assessed the existing performance of the smallholders plantation including farm income, oil palm productivity, and best practices in oil palm production. The study used household income analyses, comparative analyses, and assessment on the application of RSPO standards. The result shows that the performance of scheme smallholders are better than the Independent smallholders. There would be an increasing farm costs to comply with the RSPO standard. However, there would be no guarantte on premius price.

Abstract

Riau province is the largerst area of oil palm plantation in Indonesia. Oil palm has been cultivated commercially since 1970s by national enterprises and 1980s by smallholders. In the last ten years, production of the majority of the oil palm trees start declining. More than half of the area have to be replanted. However, the growers, particularly smallholders often delay the replanting activities due to various reasons such as access to funds, plant materials, and other inputs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of replanting models of oil palm scheme smallholders using investment criteria analysis (Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, and Net Benefit Cost Ratio). Then, study on alternative replanting models was made to find the most suitable model for the scheme smallholders. The result shows that most of the smallholders have implemented best practices in their oil palm plantation. However, since the age of the trees are more than 26 years old, the oil palm production continuous to decline. An assessment on three replanting models shows that all the models are feasible to the smallholders. Nevertheless, the intercropping model is the most suitable to the smallholders.

Abstract

This study aims to calculate the cost of replanting oil palm plants. This research was conducted in KeranjiGuguh Village and TasikSeminai Village, Koto GasibSubdistrict, Siak Regency, Riau Province, the selection of this location was based on the consideration that in these two villages the majority of the population cultivated oil palm plantations with an average plant age of 39 years. Respondents in this study were oil palm planters in KeranjiGuguh Village and TasikSeminai Village, the sampling technique used the Simple Random Sampling method, the number of samples taken was 10 farmers and 7 experts from each village. The analysis used in this research is descriptive analysis. The results of the study explain that the total cost of P0-P3 is Rp. 52,960,661/ha. While the size of the loan provided by Bank Mandiri is Rp. 87,700,000. If the land for replanting is 2 ha for each farmer, then the total cost required is Rp. 105,921,322 and the planters still have to find a lack of funds of Rp. 18,221,322. The use of the highest cost is in the activity of planting oil palm seeds, which is Rp. 7,318,500/ha and the lowest cost is for land preparation activities, which is Rp. 88,331/haKeywords: Rejuvenation, Palm Oil, Rejuvenation Cost

Abstract

The supply chain of FFB varies between RSPO-certified scheme smallholders and non-certified independent smallholders. Certification might be the main factors of the variation. The objective of this study are (1) to analyse marketing channels, marketing margin, marketing efficiency, and market structure of FFB; (2) to analyse elasticity of price transmission of certified FFB;  (3) to identify constraints in FFB marketing system; and (4) to evaluate the impacts of RSPO certification. The population of this study of RSPO-certified scheme smallholders (KKPA) and non-certified independen smallholders in Pangkalan Kuras District. The sample size are 82 farmers of RSPO-certified smallholders selected randomly and 76 farmers of non-certified smallholders chosen purposively. The study also select several marketing institutions using snowball method. The results show that the marketing channel I of the RSPO-certified smallholders is more efficient than the non-certified smallholders. The marketing chain of the RSPO-certified smallholder is the shortest chain. The market structure of RSPO-certified smallholders is monopsony while the non-certified smallholders tend to be oligopsony. The RSPO certification gives more access to the market with low impact on environment and social life.   Keywords: Marketing analysis, RSPO, scheme smallholders, independent
