Abstract

Violence against women is a global issue experienced by every country, including Indonesia. Aspects that are considered dominant and strong in society are needed in order to build equality, one of which is the religious aspect. In particular, Islam supports women. Through this article, we want to examine the role of Islam in efforts to build advocacy for women in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative library research approach, by describing the reality of the Islamic religion to build advocacy for women in Indonesia. Collecting primary and secondary data through relevant literature based on the topic of the writing. The theory used to analyze is subaltern theory by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. The main argument is that the Islamic religion seeks to advocate anti-violence against women based on human values in Islam. The findings from this paper confirm that the Islamic religion highlights two factors that influence violence against women, namely cultural values and religious teachings.  The Islamic religion in the modern context and through the Islamic feminism movement seeks to advocate and oppose violence against women.

Abstract

Abstract

The understanding of religious orientation and free will are two distinct concepts, yet both influences how individuals make decisions. However, there has been no clear identification of how religious orientation affects the understanding of free will in ethical decision-making and moral responsibility among theology students. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between religious orientation and the understanding of free will among theology students. The research employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, and the primary data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. The findings found out that religious orientation strongly influences theology students’ understanding of free will, as it serves as an ethical guide in decision-making. Faith, spiritual reflection, and personal experience also reinforce moral responsibility in the exercise of free will, affirming the close relationship between religious orientation and the understanding of free will.

Abstract

Rejection of leaders of different religions, ethnicities and so on is the main in the 2017 DKI Jakarta Governor Election, especially narratives of indigenous and non-indigenous sentiment. The church should take a role in responding to this problem. The research method that the author will use in this paper is the qualitative method of descriptive analysis. The author will also analyze the problem of why ethnicity is used as a political tool and will explore how the issue of ethnicity occurs in Indonesia and the functional role of the church in seeing this. This research uses theories about identity politics, religion in the public sphere by Habermas, Talcott Parsons' structural functionalism and Hendropuspito's religious functionalism. In a social society, of course religion as a social institution has a role and function in responding to situations that occur around it. The church does not mean being silent but has a prophetic voice to respond to this. This shows an important transformative role, namely instilling the value of renewing understanding in church members and the surrounding community about the importance of living together in a multiethnic society.

Abstract

This article explores the Tombor Maghi ritual among the Fakfak community in West Papua Province, Indonesia, which strengthens interfaith relations, particularly between Muslims and Christians. Originally part of a traditional marriage custom, the ritual has developed into a broader form of community solidarity involving cross-religious cooperation. While scholars in anthropology and sociology have extensively studied rituals, research that focuses explicitly on rituals within the context of inter-religious relations remains relatively underdeveloped. This study addresses three main research questions: how the Tombor Maghi ritual is practiced and interpreted by the Fakfak community across religious affiliations; what role the ritual plays in fostering interfaith cooperation and reinforcing communal solidarity; and what symbolic and social significance the ritual holds within the broader framework of lived religion and indigenous approaches to peacebuilding. This study employs a qualitative methodology, utilising a realist ethnographic approach. Data were collected through interviews and field observations conducted in Fakfak Regency. The findings indicate that Tombor Maghi continues to be preserved as a form of cultural dialogue that weaves together interfaith relations. The ritual reflects cultural knowledge that is created, transmitted, and practised in daily life. It provides a space for Muslims and Christians to collaborate through community-based initiatives, such as at mosques and churches. In light of these findings, further research related to this topic is suggested because there are still many interesting issues to discuss in connection with rituals that have become a philosophy in social life.
