Abstract

The story of Pandawa Lima ‘Hikayat Pandawa Lima’ (abbreviated to HPL) written in Malay is a literary work transformed from the Mahabharata Epic ‘Wiracarita Mahabharata,’ especially ‘Kakawin Bharatayuda’ (abbreviated to KBY) written in the Old Javanese language. As a transformational literary work, additions, and reductions could not be avoided. The part that was added and reduced depended on the adapter’s way of thinking and socio-culture values. It was also closely related to the linguistic, literary and cultural conventions inspiring the transformational process. This present study is intended to discuss how the adapter received KBY as the source text (hypogram), what adjustments were made, and how they were made. The problems of the study were analyzed using the theory of literary reception and the qualitative and hermeneutic method. The objective of the study is to reveal the HPL adapter’s reception of its source text (hypogram). The result of the analysis shows that the HPL adapter adapted KBY without degrading the hypogram, meaning that the great values which the hypogram contains are still intact and complete. However, several adjustments were made in HPL; they are the incidents, names of weapons, and characters.

Abstract

Gamelan Selonding in Tenganan Village has its own history, its existence is associated with stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. It begins with the discovery of three blades iron plates which is stated as gamelan selonding blade. It is believed to be a piturun not made by human beings, but because of the nature, by the people of Tenganan village called ‘Bhatara Bagus Selonding'.Gamelan Selonding for Tenganan people is very sacred. To maintain its sacredness, it should be adapted to the concept desa, kala, and patra, should not be touched by anyone else, except by a designated group of seven people as Juru Gambel (Balinese musician). Juru Gambel has their responsibility for the sanctity of Selonding gamelan, it cannot be placed at random space and could only be played at specified time. For Tenganan people the Selonding gamelan sacredness is not just an outward statement, but the totality of the integration of thoughts, feelings, words and attitudes, so that the treatment for the Selonding is a form of prostration. Selonding not only honored and sacred, and sanctified, but it fulfills all the vibrations of the Tenganan Village community in meeting space, time, and circumstances. This paper uses a qualitative approach and the writing mechanism analyzes the text which is described to know and understand the sacredness of Selonding gamelan in Tenganan. Keywords: Gamelan Selonding, function, sacred.

Abstract

Transformation of classic stories, epics, or regional folklore into Indonesian is an important part of the history of literary life in Indonesia. This article discusses the transformation of the story of Bhagawan Domya in Adi Parwa which is part of the Mahabharata epic into Indonesian folklore entitled Sang Eka Jala Resi (1977/1978). The study focuses on the transformation process, the impacts of adapter’s receptions on the transformation process, as well as the existence of values ??in the source and the result texts. This qualitative study draws data from source and result texts and analyzed them with intertextuality and reception theories. The analysis shows that in the transformation process, adapters use various techniques including conversion, expansion, modification, and lacuna (removal). Even though there are changes during the transformation, moral values ??that are useful for character building in the Bhagawan Domya source text are still substantially the same in the Sang Eka Jala Resi result text.

Abstract

The short story Ngantosang Ulungan Bulan by Carma Mira reflects Balinese culture within the context of social life and romance, particularly related to the custom that forbids a younger sibling from marrying before the elder. The main character experiences inner conflict because both of the older siblings remain unmarried for their own reasons. This story emphasizes the importance of preserving Balinese cultural identity amid the current of social change and conveys a moral message about respect for family and tradition. This study aims to reveal the meanings contained in the story using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The analysis is conducted through five main codes: hermeneutic, connotative, symbolic, action, and cultural. Through this approach, cultural values, traditional symbols, and the tension between modernity and custom can be explored. As a literary work written in the Balinese language, the story also demonstrates the importance of regional language as a medium for cultural preservation and the expression of community identity.
