Abstract

Background: According to Riset Kesehatan Dasar (Riskesdas) year 2010, the infant mortality rate per 1,000 live births was 36-41 and under five mortality rate per 1,000 live births was amounted at 62-64 . Based on the profile of Jayapura District Health Office in 2009 , the infant mortality rate per 1,000 live births was 12.99 and the maternal mortality rate per 1,000 live births was 6 and the prevalence of malnutrition among children under five years was 3.20 % . Based on the data collected from the regular reports done by Provincial Health Offices throughout Indonesia in the National Summit of Child Health Programs in 2010 , the number of health centers implementing integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) until the end of 2009 was amounted to 51.55 % , but not all health centers were able to implement IMCI approach for various reasons , among others : lack of health personnel having trained IMCI; the health personnel has been trained but the infrastructure was not yet ready; lack of commitment or policy of the leadership of the health center , and others. Objective: The objectives of the research were to analyze further the factors affecting the implementation failure of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness ( IMCI ) in Sentani Health Center, Jayapura. Method: The research was qualitative method. The research population were the DHO officers and health center staff who have been involved in IMCI service, while the samples taken were 5 informants . The sampling technique was non- random purposive sampling. Result: The results showed that IMCI was not implemented in Sentani health centers due to the unbalance number of officers who deal with infants / toddlers; due to double jobs done by IMCI-trained personnel, the trained personnel were moved to different health centers; or the trained personnel continued their education. IMCI failed to be implemented in the health center was also due to the termination of procuring IMCI supporting facilities at Sentani health center by Jayapura District Health Office, and lack of quality of the facilities for handling infants / toddlers provided by Jayapura District Health Office . IMCI was failed to be implemented in the health center which is also caused by the absence of Sentani policy (implementation guidance and technical advice) regarding the implementation of IMCI in health centers . Others factor for IMCI not being implemented in Sentani health center was due to the limited funds from the local budget which could not support all activities of the organization of IMCI such as training , supervision and evaluation to the officers . Conclusion: IMCI in health centers Sentani is not implemented due to the factors of human resources, infrastructure , policies , budgets , officers’ habits, patient satisfaction towards the conventional methods (non IMCI), as well as the lack of supervision by District Health Office on the IMCI implementation in the health center.

Abstract

Mortality is a key metric in evaluating the quality of health services. Therefore, a study was needed that aimed to analyze the characteristics of mortality based on race, gender, age, and occupation at Abepura Jayapura Regional Hospital during 2021-2022. This study was a quantitative descriptive study. Data for all variables were collected through documentation and observation studies, which were then analyzed using descriptive statistical methods in the form of frequencies with proportions. The results of the study showed that there was a significant change in the causes of death, from infectious diseases such as Covid-19 infection in 2021 to non-infectious diseases such as cerebral infarction in 2022. The highest deaths in 2021 occurred in non-Papuan residents (52.4%), men (60.4%), the 59-60 year age group (69%), and the non-worker group (40.9%). In 2022, the highest deaths shifted to the indigenous Papuan race (57.1%), remaining high in men (61.4%), the 59-60 year age group (72.2%), and private workers (44%). Cardiovascular diseases dominated the highest causes of death in both years. Abstract

The training of Community Sports Cadres on Organizing Safe and Healthy Matches is motivated by the increasing number of sporting events which often ignore safety and health aspects. This activity involved 40 participants from the local community and the South Jayapura district youth organization. The aim of the activity is to increase understanding and skills in organizing matches in accordance with safe and healthy standards. The training method applied includes several steps, namely a pretest to measure participants' initial knowledge, followed by an education and training session that includes theory and practice, then ending with an evaluation. After the session, a posttest was carried out to assess the increase in participants' understanding. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge; The percentage of participants who understood the material rose from 67% of participants who understood and 33% of participants who did not understand during the pretest to 93% of participants who understood and the remaining 7% who did not understand after education and training. The conclusion of this activity shows that the training succeeded in achieving its goal of increasing the capacity of safe and healthy sports cadres. The resulting suggestion is the need to carry out similar training on a regular basis to continue to educate and empower the public in the safety and health aspects of organizing sports.

Abstract

This research is based on the critical role of social marketing in raising awareness and promoting healthy behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in Jayapura City, where challenges persist in disseminating effective information and influencing public behavior regarding health protocol adherence. The study aims to analyze the implementation of social marketing through promotional media, such as posters and health protocols displayed in public areas, in enhancing knowledge and influencing behavioral changes among the residents of Jayapura City in COVID-19 prevention. A qualitative case study method was used to evaluate the implementation of social marketing in COVID-19 promotional media and its impact on public knowledge in Jayapura City. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with respondents from diverse social backgrounds, as well as direct observation of promotional media distributed throughout the city. The findings reveal that while promotional media, such as COVID-19 posters and health protocols displayed in public areas, succeeded in improving the public's basic understanding of the importance of health protocols, there were significant barriers to the consistent application of such behaviors. Factors such as limited access to information, a lack of in-depth understanding, and social resistance to behavioral changes posed considerable challenges to enhancing the effectiveness of the campaign. The research also found that while the campaign positively impacted awareness levels, a more integrated and contextual approach is needed to achieve comprehensive behavioral change among the community.

Abstract

Purpose: Papua Province is Indonesia's largest contributor to malaria cases, accounting for 81% of the national malaria burden. These cases are concentrated in City of Jayapura, Jayapura Regency, Keerom, Mimika, Sarmi, Mamberamo Raya, Asmat, Boven Digoel, and the Yapen Islands. Given this high concentration, there is an urgent need for accelerated efforts to reduce malaria cases, particularly in these areas, to improve the overall malaria situation in Papua. Self-medication behavior plays a crucial role in malaria treatment, but fostering the desired knowledge and behavior around self-medication is challenging. This study surveyed the understanding of malaria and self-medication practices among the local population of Papua. Methods: The survey involved 100 respondents in areas with access to doctors and community health centers (Puskesmas) in Harapan Village, Jayapura Regency. Results: While there is strong knowledge about malaria transmission, significant gaps remain in safe self-medication practices, such as improper medication use and storage. These findings highlight the need for better public education on the importance of following medical instructions and seeking timely medical consultation when self-medication fails. Conclusion: Despite having relatively better access to a public health center, the local Papuan community still exhibits unsafe self-medication practices for malaria treatment. There is an urgent need to improve malaria treatment literacy and educate the community on proper treatment behaviors to ensure more effective malaria control.
