Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the readiness of EFL students across different grade levels to utilize ChatGPT as a supportive tool in English language learning, based on the RAIS framework, in response to the lack of empirical investigation into students’ preparedness in terms of technology self-efficacy, student interaction, and ethical awareness as a foundation for effective and responsible AI integration in secondary education. This study aimed to investigate the readiness of EFL students to use ChatGPT in English learning at one of the publics Senior High Schools in North Bali. This research employed a quantitative survey method, in which data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using statistical techniques. The population of this study consisted of EFL students at One of the publics Senior High Schools in North Bali, with samples drawn from students in grades 10, 11, and 12. The results of the study revealed that (1) The overall level of readiness of EFL students at One of the publics Senior High Schools in North Bali to use ChatGPT in English learning was high. These findings indicate that students are capable of accessing and utilizing artificial intelligence-based technology and possess adequate attitudes, self-confidence, and ethical awareness to integrate ChatGPT into their English learning process. (2) Differences in readiness levels among EFL students in grades 10, 11, and 12 at One of the publics Senior High Schools in North Bali showed no statistically significant differences. This finding indicates that readiness to use ChatGPT as a supporting tool for English learning is relatively uniform across grade levels, suggesting that contextual and pedagogical factors, such as consistent curriculum, institutional support, and exposure to technology-integrated learning, play a more critical role than grade level or academic progression in shaping students’ technology readiness. Future researchers are recommended to expand the scope of the study by involving multiple institutions, employing mixed-method approaches, and examining the relationship between students’ AI readiness and actual English learning outcomes to provide a more comprehensive understanding of effective ChatGPT integration in secondary education.

Abstract

The development of digital technology in education offers opportunities to create more engaging and meaningful English learning for early childhood. One approach that has gained attention is digital storytelling, which integrates visual, audio, animation, and contextual narrative elements. Despite its growing use, comprehensive studies examining its role in enhancing engagement and motivation among young learners remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to systematically examine how digital storytelling enhances student engagement and motivation in English learning. This research employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following the PRISMA framework. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 were collected through Publish or Perish as the primary source, supported by Google Scholar, Connected Papers, and Semantic Scholar. Based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 articles were selected and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that digital storytelling enhances engagement across behavioral, cognitive, and emotional dimensions. Students become more active in language activities, demonstrate deeper understanding, and show greater enthusiasm during learning. It also strengthens intrinsic motivation by presenting contextual and relatable stories that foster enjoyment, confidence, and a sense of ownership. Student involvement in creating digital stories further promotes creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and responsibility. Therefore, digital storytelling is a flexible and sustainable strategy for improving engagement and intrinsic motivation in young learners’ English learning.

Abstract

Globalization has drastically changed the social structure of society, particularly in the economic and cultural sectors. This phenomenon is marked by the expansion of global capitalism through the tourism industry, targeting regions rich in tradition. In Bali, tourism plays a dual role: as an economic engine and a meeting point between local values and international market demands. Consequently, challenges arise for indigenous communities to maintain the authenticity of traditions amidst the pressures of a competitive economy. As part of the Bali Aga community, the Tenganan Pagringsingan Traditional Village maintains a structured system of local wisdom passed down through generations. Its unique cultural identity is reflected in spatial planning, customary law (awig-awig), and even its heritage of gringsing textiles, which tend to be protected from outside intervention. Nevertheless, the pressures of globalization through the tourism sector force the community to adapt its culture. This process creates a dynamic between exploiting economic opportunities and efforts to maintain the authenticity of traditions to prevent them from being eroded by time. This research is to examine how the community of the Tenganan Pagringsingan Traditional Village adapts its local wisdom amidst the flow of global tourism capitalism. Furthermore, this study explores the significance of this adaptation for the preservation of local culture. Using a qualitative approach and desk study methods, the data were analyzed descriptively, referring to literature on globalization and the sociocultural dynamics of indigenous communities. This study reveals that the cultural adaptation process took place in a measured and selective manner. The community succeeded in maintaining the integrity of traditional values, social structures, and sacred rituals from the influence of commercialization, while integrating the economic aspects of tourism through the crafts and services sectors. This dynamic and compromising strategy demonstrates that globalization can be managed as an opportunity to strengthen the sustainability of local identity, rather than simply being viewed as a challenge.

Abstract

This study investigates the presentation of spirituality as a character education value in the Grade 4 ELT students’ book entitled “My Next Word.” Employing a qualitative content analysis design, the research analyses and examines visual artifacts presented in the student’s book based on five subdimensions of spirituality, based on the dimension of faith in God Almighty of Graduate Profile Values framework. These subdimensions include spirituality in religious practice, spirituality in personal morality, spirituality in social morality, spirituality in environmental morality, and spirituality in civic morality. The findings reveal that spirituality in personal morality is the most frequently represented value in the book, reflected in visuals that emphasize discipline, cleanliness, responsibility, and self-care. This is followed by spirituality in social morality, which is evident in depictions of cooperation, respect, and helping behaviour. However, spirituality in religious practices, environmental, and civic moralities appears minimally and is not consistently highlighted throughout the book. Overall, these results indicated that the book integrated spirituality-based character education mainly through daily-life activities rather than explicit religious symbols or direct doctrinal representations, suggesting an implicit and practiced-oriented approach.

Abstract

Previous research on ChatGPT has revealed mixed attitudes among teachers and students, highlighting the need for further investigation. While most studies focused on the university level, there is an essential gap in attitude research focusing on secondary school settings, exploring the enjoyment that affects attitudes. This study aimed to investigate teachers’ and students’ attitudes and enjoyment towards ChatGPT in English language learning. An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was employed, involving 8 English teachers and 311 students from a secondary school in Singaraja. The data in this study were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The quantitative findings showed positive attitudes among teachers and students, but based on the constituent aspects, it is shown that teachers tended to have more positive attitudes than students. Qualitative interviews further highlighted that ChatGPT contributed to emotional experiences influenced by the tool's strengths and weaknesses, as well as social perceptions of users. These findings suggested that integrating ChatGPT into English language learning stimulated positive responses due to its advantages in reducing academic burdens. However, the tool's shortcomings have also drawn attention, including triggering negative behavioral risks and overreliance among students. English educators needed to guide students in using ChatGPT more ethically by rechecking and confirming students' answers suspected to be AI-based. In addition, policymakers can initiate ChatGPT and AI training periodically to enhance teachers’ compatibility, particularly for senior teachers.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence has influenced English language learning practices, particularly through the integration of ChatGPT as a learning support tool. This study investigates students’ perceptions of ChatGPT’s usability and explores their learning experiences when using the tool in the English Language Education Study Program. The population consisted of 941 undergraduate students enrolled in the program. Using simple random sampling and Slovin’s formula with a 10% margin of error, 90 students were selected as research participants. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed. Participants used the free version of ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) for one academic semester to support tasks such as writing assignments, idea development, grammar checking, and understanding linguistic concepts. Its use was integrated into coursework and guided by lecturers to promote critical and responsible engagement. Quantitative data were collected using the System Usability Scale (SUS), while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with four purposively selected students to gain deeper insight into their experiences. Descriptive analysis revealed an average SUS score of 63, indicating marginal usability. This suggests that although ChatGPT is perceived as beneficial, its usability has not yet reached an optimal level for academic purposes. Interview findings indicated that participants described generally positive learning experiences, including increased confidence, reduced anxiety, and assistance in developing writing skills. However, these qualitative insights reflect individual perspectives and do not constitute a measured level of enjoyment across the broader sample. Several challenges were identified, including occasional inaccuracies, overly general responses, and the potential for overreliance without adequate pedagogical supervision.
