Abstract

The approach, strategy, innovation, and collaboration of educators are vital to improving student competency in the era of global communication. One of the challenges students face in Indonesia is mastering English and Arabic. Community Service at MIM, AKA Mojogedang, Karanganyar, aims to improve the vocabulary of both languages through direct practice guided by native speakers from Yemen. As a result, students' English skills increased from 55% to 80%, while Arabic skills increased from 60% to 86%. This increase is significant because the interactive and direct learning approach does not only focus on theory. Through the development of continuous approaches and collaboration, this learning forms students who are more holistically competent and ready to face the challenges of global communication. This progressive and moderate education can equip students with essential skills in modern computing.

Abstract

This study explores how English teachers at vocational high schools understand and apply authentic assessment within the Kurikulum Merdeka framework. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, Data were analyzed using thematic analysis by identifying key patterns from semi-structured interviews with two teachers, then triangulated through passive classroom observations to validate and enrich the findings. The findings show that both teachers have a good understanding of authentic assessment and are able to apply it through meaningful and relevant learning activities. They use methods such as projects, presentations, and practical tasks that reflect real-world skills. However, the study also found several challenges, including limited facilities, low student motivation, and time management difficulties due to large class sizes. These factors make it harder to implement authentic assessment effectively. Despite these obstacles, both teachers showed strong enthusiasm for using authentic assessment and highlighted the need for more training and support from the school. The study concludes that while authentic assessment is very relevant for vocational English education, its success depends on adequate resources, supportive policies, and continuous professional development.

Abstract

The Merdeka curriculum, a pivotal element in contemporary Indonesian education, encapsulates three key learning components: objectives, steps, and assessment. This study investigates into one of these components namely the learning steps in the context of English language instruction. Adopting a phenomenological approach, the research focuses on two English teachers at a junior high school in Central Java, aiming to illuminate the practical implementation of the learning steps. Data collection encompassed classroom observations, in-depth interviews with the teachers, and comprehensive documentation, including visual records from the classes. This multifaceted approach yielded rich qualitative insights into the pedagogical practices and experiences of these educators. The findings reveal a tripartite structure of the learning steps: the 'Opening' phase, where teachers connect new content with students' prior knowledge and motivate them towards the lesson; the 'Core Activities' phase, involving exploration, elaboration, and confirmation of the subject matter; and the 'Closing' phase, which includes summarizing key points, reflective activities, and preparing students for future lessons. Significantly, these structured phases highlight the holistic and effective methodology of the Merdeka curriculum in teaching English, offering valuable insights into its practical implementation and impact on educational outcomes.
