Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape of language education. Specifically, on the context of translation courses, the presence of AI is inevitably affecting the practices of translation by emerging various perceptions on it. Hence, this study aims to explore the Indonesian EFL students’ views on the role of AI in translation practices. Using the mixed method with sequential explanatory (Creswell & Clark, 2017), data were gathered through a Likert Scale questionnaire administered to 100 students from two Translation Courses in English Language Education Study Program at a state university in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The findings reveal a dichotomy in students’ perceptions: while some view AI as a beneficial tool that enhances efficiency and accuracy, others express concerns about its potential to diminish language skills, creativity, and the role of human translators. These mixed perceptions highlight the need for a balanced approach in integrating AI into translation education, ensuring that students develop both technological proficiency and critical translation skills. The study’s implications suggest a reconsideration of curriculum design, emphasizing the complementary roles of AI and human expertise in fostering well-rounded translators.

Abstract

The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based writing assistance applications has the potential to transform how students approach the academic writing process, particularly in the context of English language learning. Although most previous research has focused on the effectiveness of this technology in improving writing skills in general, studies that explore students’ direct experiences using this technology—specifically within the context of local higher education—remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to explore how English language education students utilize writing assistance applications to support the academic writing process and to understand the implications for their thinking processes, independent learning, and ethical boundaries in academic writing. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study method involving ten English education students at Palangka Raya University. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that students actively use various writing assistance applications such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, QuillBot, and Google Translate at various stages of the writing process, particularly for brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, paraphrasing, and revising academic writing. This study also shows that the use of the app has a positive impact on improving students’ writing quality, time efficiency, self-confidence, and academic performance. However, this study also highlights challenges, including the potential for dependency, limitations in the quality of results, and concerns regarding critical thinking and academic ethics.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to provide English-language information at the Balanga Museum, especially at the Tjilik Riwut Museum, in Palangka Raya City, Central Kalimantan Province. The translation of documents in the form of Tjilik Riwut’s biography was carried out by a team consisting of one lecturer and five students from the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Palangka Raya through service learning method. The translated documents contain information about Tjilik Riwut’s biography, military career, government career, and trivia. These texts were translated from Indonesian into English with the attention to accuracy of meaning and acceptability in the target language. The translation results submitted to the Head of the Balanga Museum are in the form of printed text and a standing banner containing a summary of Tjilik Riwut’s biography and a QR code that will direct to an online folder containing the full text.
