Abstract

This study is a literature review that examines the effectiveness of transformational leadership by school principals in improving organisational performance related to the learning process in senior high schools. The objectives of this study are (1) to formulate the concept and dimensions of transformational leadership in the context of secondary schools, (2) to examine empirical evidence regarding the influence of transformational leadership on teacher performance, school climate, and student learning outcomes, and (3) to identify mechanisms (mediators and moderators) that strengthen or weaken these influences. A systematic review of empirical literature and meta-reviews published in the last 10 years shows consistent findings: transformational leadership is positively correlated and often significantly influences teacher motivation and performance, collaborative culture, Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB), and several indicators of learning process effectiveness. these effects are often mediated by teacher job satisfaction, professional learning communities (PLCs), and school climate, and moderated by contextual factors such as resource support and school culture. Practical implications are discussed for the development of headteacher capacity and educational leadership development policies.

Abstract

This study examines how the integration of principals’ transformational leadership with Minangkabau cultural values serves as a constructive strategy for strengthening a positive school culture. The study addresses a gap in the literature, as research on transformational leadership has largely adopted a general perspective and has rarely explored its integration with local cultural values, despite the strong influence of Minangkabau traditions on leadership practices, social behavior, and character development in West Sumatra. A qualitative case study approach was employed. Data were collected through classroom and school observations, in-depth interviews with 12 participants, including the principal, teachers, and students, as well as document analysis. The findings reveal that transformational leadership is reflected in the development of a shared vision, inspirational communication, moral role modeling, and participatory decision-making. Core Minangkabau values, including bajanjang naiak, batanggo turun, duduak marundak, tagak maimpok, and the philosophy of Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah, are meaningfully embedded in leadership practices and character education. In addition, the Local Content Program on Minangkabau Culture functions as a strategic medium for transmitting cultural values, ethical principles, and student character. The integration of transformational leadership and local wisdom fosters a collaborative school culture, strengthens discipline through moral awareness, and promotes respectful, culturally grounded student character. The novelty of this study lies in proposing a culturally grounded model of transformational leadership based on Minangkabau values, offering a contextual framework for cultivating positive school culture and informing educational leadership policies in culturally diverse settings.

Abstract

Organizational culture plays a strategic role in supporting quality improvement and the sustainability of educational institutions, including madrasahs. The leadership of the madrasah principal is a key factor in shaping and directing organizational culture to align with religious values and the demands of educational innovation. This study aims to describe the transformational leadership practices of the madrasah principal in developing a religious and innovative organizational culture at MTsN 17 Tanah Datar. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The madrasah principal was selected as the key informant, while teachers and educational staff served as supporting informants selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through triangulation and member checking. The findings indicate that the transformational leadership of the madrasah principal plays a significant role in transforming organizational culture from conventional work patterns into a religious, collaborative, innovative, performance-based, and externally oriented culture. This cultural transformation was realized through exemplary leadership and the strengthening of discipline, the habituation of religious activities as an organizational identity, the development of a participatory work culture, encouragement of innovation and continuous learning, the implementation of an appreciation-based culture, and the strengthening of communication and external relations of the madrasah. These changes in organizational culture have led to increased motivation and professionalism among madrasah members, improved institutional management quality, and a positive public image and community trust in the madrasah.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the influence of principals’ transformational leadership and teacher work commitment on instructional performance outcomes in public elementary schools in Padang Pariaman Regency, Indonesia. This study employed a quantitative explanatory research design. The sample consisted of 182 teachers selected through cluster multistage stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, simple regression, and multiple regression analysis. The findings showed that principals’ transformational leadership had a positive and significant effect on teachers’ instructional performance outcomes. In contrast, teacher work commitment did not have a significant partial effect, although teachers generally demonstrated a good level of commitment. Simultaneously, transformational leadership and work commitment had a significant effect on instructional performance outcomes; however, their combined contribution was relatively small, explaining only 4.0% of the variance. Transformational leadership emerged as the dominant predictor in the model. The study concludes that improving instructional performance outcomes requires strengthening principals’ transformational leadership, particularly intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration, while also supporting teachers through professional development, adequate resources, and conducive school conditions.

Abstract

Abstract

Despite the increasing concern over school bullying in Indonesia, limited empirical studies have examined teachers’ attitudes toward bullying across different school contexts and professional statuses. This study aims to compare teachers’ attitudes toward school bullying based on school location (suburban and rural) and teacher certification status. A quantitative survey design was employed using the Teachers’ Attitudes About Bullying Questionnaire (TAABQ), administered to 75 in-service high school teachers in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and comparative analysis of mean scores across groups. The findings revealed four key dimensions of teachers’ attitudes: system commitment, teacher commitment, concern, and confidence. Overall, teachers demonstrated strong awareness of the negative impact of bullying and emphasized the need for school policies, parental involvement, and professional development programs. Certified teachers consistently reported higher scores across all dimensions compared to uncertified teachers. Similarly, teachers in suburban schools showed stronger commitment and concern, whereas teachers in rural schools reported relatively higher confidence in handling bullying incidents. These findings contribute theoretically to the literature on teacher responses to school bullying in developing-country contexts and provide practical implications for teacher professional development and anti-bullying policy interventions.

Abstract

Teacher work motivation plays a crucial role in enhancing instructional quality and achieving educational goals. This study examined the influence of Principal Supportive Leadership and School Environment on Teacher Work Motivation among public junior high school teachers. A quantitative research design was employed using simple and multiple linear regression analyses. The study involved 276 teachers selected through proportionate stratified random sampling from 47 public junior high schools in a regency of West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The sample size was determined using the Cochran formula. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 23. The findings revealed that Principal Supportive Leadership had a positive and significant influence on Teacher Work Motivation. Similarly, School Environment significantly influenced Teacher Work Motivation. The simultaneous analysis demonstrated that both variables jointly explained Teacher Work Motivation better than either variable individually. These findings highlight the complementary roles of supportive leadership and a positive school environment in fostering teachers’ motivation. The study contributes to the educational leadership literature by providing empirical evidence that organizational conditions are important determinants of teacher work motivation and by offering practical implications for developing supportive school leadership and collaborative learning environments.

Abstract

This study examines the effects of the Google Reference School Candidate (KSRG) Program, teacher motivation, and transformational leadership on teachers' digital competence through school climate in State Senior High Schools across West Sumatra Province. A quantitative causal research design was employed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The study involved 481 teachers selected through purposive sampling from State Senior High Schools across West Sumatra. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire measuring teachers' digital competence, the KSRG Program, teacher motivation, transformational leadership, and school climate. Data were analyzed using SmartPLS to evaluate the measurement model and structural model. The findings indicate that the KSRG Program (β = 0.246, p < 0.001) and teacher motivation (β = 0.843, p < 0.001) have positive and significant effects on teachers' digital competence, whereas transformational leadership has no significant direct effect (β = –0.083, p = 0.061). The KSRG Program, teacher motivation, and transformational leadership significantly influence school climate, while school climate has a significant negative effect on teachers' digital competence (β = –0.145, p = 0.016). Furthermore, school climate significantly mediates the relationships between the KSRG Program, teacher motivation, transformational leadership, and teachers' digital competence. The study concludes that teacher motivation is the strongest determinant of teachers' digital competence, whereas transformational leadership plays the most prominent role in shaping school climate. These findings highlight the importance of integrating motivational, organizational, and digital transformation initiatives through the KSRG Program to strengthen teachers' digital competence.

Abstract

This descriptive quantitative research investigated students' perceptions of the management of Scout extracurricular activities at public junior high schools in Guguak Panjang District, Bukittinggi City. The study was conducted in response to indications that several management functions, including planning, organizing, implementation, and evaluation, had not yet been fully optimized. The objective was to describe students' perceptions of Scout extracurricular management based on these four management dimensions. The study involved 102 respondents selected from a population of 2,684 seventh- and eighth-grade students using proportional random sampling. Data were collected through a five-point Likert questionnaire that had satisfied validity and reliability requirements. Descriptive statistical analysis using the mean score was employed to interpret the data. The findings revealed that students perceived the management of Scout extracurricular activities as good. The mean scores for planning, organizing, implementation, and evaluation were 4.02, 4.13, 4.07, and 4.18, respectively, with an overall mean of 4.12. These findings indicate that the management of Scout extracurricular activities has generally been implemented effectively. Nevertheless, improvements are still required in the planning aspect, particularly in scheduling activities that better accommodate students' academic responsibilities and participation.

Abstract

School administrative staff are one of the components of educational personnel who play an important role in supporting the smooth implementation of education through various administrative and school service activities. This study aimed to determine the level of achievement motivation among school administrative staff, assess the condition of the school climate, and determine whether there was a significant relationship between school climate and the achievement motivation of school administrative staff in junior high schools in Ranah Pesisir District. This study employed a quantitative approach using a correlational method. The research population consisted of 42 school administrative staff, and the sample consisted of 42 respondents selected using simple random sampling with the Slovin formula at a 5% margin of error. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of 25 items for the school climate variable and 25 items for the achievement motivation variable. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, linearity tests, Pearson correlation, and t-tests with the assistance of SPSS version 26. The results showed that the achievement motivation of school administrative staff was categorized as high, with a mean score of 4.24 and an achievement level of 85.7%. The school climate was categorized as good, with a mean score of 4.46 and an achievement level of 89.3%. However, the correlation test showed a correlation coefficient of 0.014 with a significance level of 0.929. The t-test resulted in a t-count of 0.090, while the t-table value was 2.021 at df = 40 and a significance level of 0.05. Since the t-count was lower than the t-table value and the significance level was greater than 0.05, the alternative hypothesis was rejected. Therefore, there was no significant relationship between school climate and the achievement motivation of school administrative staff in this study.
