Abstract

The debate over the term “evil” is one of the most contentious issues in philosophy, as this term is considered to be antithetical to existence. Suhrawardī al-Maqtūl, a prominent Islamic theosophist, believed that evil did not exist. That which is considered evil or not evil is a suggestion for achieving good, and as such, it is also good. As a result, the term “crime” does not exist. What Suhrawardī said contrasted with John Hick’s view in the article “Theodicy of Soul Cultivation.” Hick concludes that basically evil exists, but only insofar as it is required to develop and evolve the human psyche and spirituality. After comparing the thoughts of these two figures, this article concludes that their partisan defence of God’s existence and His attributes regarding evil is what leads us to their views on the term “evil” and solutions to solve the crime. Suhrawardi and Hick both believe that the existence of evil does not preclude the existence of God because God is absolute. God is not against good or evil. What has considered evil is the judgment of one’s misunderstanding or the requirements for obtaining charity.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the persistent tension between religion and science in Indonesia, as different perspectives have emerged on issues such as vaccination, restrictions on worship, and public health protocols. This moment of crisis underscores the broader epistemological gulf between religious belief and scientific reasoning, reigniting the debate about their respective roles in addressing existential and social challenges. Responding to this complex landscape, Haidar Bagir and Ulil Abshar Abdalla have articulated two conceptual frameworks of religious science and scientific religion that aim to redefine the relationship between religion and science. This article critically analyzes the arguments using John Haught’s taxonomy of conflict, contrast, contact, and confirmation. Haidar Bagir’s views emphasize respectful differentiation and dialogical engagement in the form of contrast and contact, while Ulil Abshar Abdalla envisions a more harmonious interaction that affirms mutual legitimacy in the form of confirmation. Both thinkers reject the absolutism of modern scientism and call for religious thought to be more responsive to scientific developments. This study highlights the urgency of fostering epistemological synergy so that religion and science can face the ethical and intellectual challenges of our time together.

Abstract

This article analyzes the construction of digital patriarchy in Islamic moral discourse through the use of hadith about dayyūth on the Instagram account @mahasiswa.salaf using Robert N. Entman's Framing Analysis framework. In the context of social media as a space for contesting religious authority, this hadith not only functions as a source of family ethics but also as an ideological instrument that shapes moral boundaries and gender relations. Through Entman's four dimensions, such as problem definition, diagnosis of causes, moral judgment, and treatment recommendation, this article shows that the account defines moral threats as the result of men's negligence in protecting family honor, judges such behavior as a sin that blocks the path to heaven, and recommends male control over women as a solution. These findings reveal that religious narratives in digital spaces reinforce patriarchal hegemony through textual legitimation, but also open up space for resistance through audience interactions that challenge conservative interpretations with arguments for gender equality. This article contributes to the study of digital religion and Islamic gender studies by emphasizing the need for a reinterpretation of hadith based on social ethics that emphasize collective moral responsibility, the value of raḥmah, and justice in an increasingly ideological and fragmented digital religious ecosystem.

Abstract

Polygamy remains a controversial issue in contemporary Islamic discourse, causing tension between the legitimacy of hadith texts and their social implications for gender justice. This study explores the construction of discourse on polygamy in the digital space through a netnographic approach to the Instagram account @khalidbasalamahofficial. The analysis focuses on the representation of hadiths on justice in polygamy and how the public responds to, affirms, or criticizes the content of these sermons. The results show that hadiths are selectively represented to affirm the legality of polygamy in Islamic law, while also functioning as a symbolic instrument in building digital religious authority. However, public interactions give rise to negotiations of meaning that indicate an epistemic transformation, in which religious authority shifts from formal institutions to a more participatory digital public sphere. In this context, the Qirā’ah Mubādalah approach offers a reinterpretative framework that emphasizes the principles of reciprocity and justice, demanding the realization of equal social relations and fair and dignified treatment of women. Thus, polygamy is not only understood as a permissible practice but also as an arena for moral reflection, affirming that balance, equality, and mutual benefit are at the core of religious authority and practice in the digital age.

Abstract

The question of what constitutes true happiness has been a core philosophical issue that has warranted multiple attempts in the attempt to provide a final answer, either from a purely religious or philosophical perspective. The issue of happiness is closely connected to the meaning of life and its ultimate outcome and purpose. The modern Muslim philosopher Muhammad Hossein Tabatabai discussed the nature of happiness at length. In his view, human beings instinctively strive to attain happiness or the ultimate good which can only be achieved through nearness to God. Therefore, true happiness requires the believer to commit righteous deeds and avoid sinful acts. This study follows a philosophical-Sufi approach and uses a descriptive-analytical method to examine the nature of happiness, the relationship between happiness, goodness and pleasure according to Tabatabai. In line with Islamic thought, true and lasting happiness can only be attained in the Hereafter, and happiness in this life, no matter how acutely and deeply felt, is merely a shadow of the true happiness of the believers who have attained God’s permission to enter Paradise.

Abstract

Abstract: This article analyzes the activities of Islamic organizations formed by the elite kiai and lora in Pamekasan, namely the Forum Kiai Muda (FKM) Madura, where the production of Islamic religious thoughts and movements can organize massively and is able to form layered sectarianism in Pamekasan Madura. As an Islamic religious movement, FKM’s vision is to anticipate and avoid the Madura region from all forms of teaching deviations and understanding congregation. There are four types of religious irregularities that are the main targets, namely Shî‘ah, Wahabi, Liberal, and blasphemy, which they later abbreviate as SYIBILIP. These four understandings are great enemies for Islam. The mention of FKM as a religious mass organization that moves in the political area refers to their strategic roles and functions that actively involve themselves in many political dynamics, both at the regional and central levels. At the regional level, FKM’s political strategic roles and functions are clearly illustrated in the political cooperation they have built with political party elites at the regional level. Keywords: Kiai Muda Forum (FKM); Islamism; movement.

Abstract

This article addresses an academic issue regarding how the integration between hadith and science is manifested in the digital space, particularly through the use of immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR). In this context, this study analyzes digital content that represents the integration of hadith and science, focusing on several social media accounts on Instagram and TikTok, namely @relijenius, @santai_tapisampai, @edimujiono19, and @vrjourney.indo. John Haught's taxonomy is used to map the relationship patterns between religion and science within this content, including four relationship models: conflict, contrast, contact, and confirmation. This study specifically highlights two dominant approaches: confirmation and contact. The analysis reveals that the confirmation approach is more prominent, reflected in narratives that seek to affirm religious texts through scientific justification. Meanwhile, the contact approach is evident through the use of 5D VR technology, which enables the visualization of religious experiences in an intense and contextual manner. These findings suggest that the integration of hadith and science in the digital ecosystem tends to be practical rather than conceptual, and oriented toward the re-mediation of religious narratives through contemporary language and technology. In this sense, Haught’s typology not only serves as a classification framework but also as a reflective tool for understanding the epistemological dynamics in the production of digital religious knowledge.
