Abstract

This article analyzes the construction of digital patriarchy in Islamic moral discourse through the use of hadith about dayyūth on the Instagram account @mahasiswa.salaf using Robert N. Entman's Framing Analysis framework. In the context of social media as a space for contesting religious authority, this hadith not only functions as a source of family ethics but also as an ideological instrument that shapes moral boundaries and gender relations. Through Entman's four dimensions, such as problem definition, diagnosis of causes, moral judgment, and treatment recommendation, this article shows that the account defines moral threats as the result of men's negligence in protecting family honor, judges such behavior as a sin that blocks the path to heaven, and recommends male control over women as a solution. These findings reveal that religious narratives in digital spaces reinforce patriarchal hegemony through textual legitimation, but also open up space for resistance through audience interactions that challenge conservative interpretations with arguments for gender equality. This article contributes to the study of digital religion and Islamic gender studies by emphasizing the need for a reinterpretation of hadith based on social ethics that emphasize collective moral responsibility, the value of raḥmah, and justice in an increasingly ideological and fragmented digital religious ecosystem.

Abstract

The question of what constitutes true happiness has been a core philosophical issue that has warranted multiple attempts in the attempt to provide a final answer, either from a purely religious or philosophical perspective. The issue of happiness is closely connected to the meaning of life and its ultimate outcome and purpose. The modern Muslim philosopher Muhammad Hossein Tabatabai discussed the nature of happiness at length. In his view, human beings instinctively strive to attain happiness or the ultimate good which can only be achieved through nearness to God. Therefore, true happiness requires the believer to commit righteous deeds and avoid sinful acts. This study follows a philosophical-Sufi approach and uses a descriptive-analytical method to examine the nature of happiness, the relationship between happiness, goodness and pleasure according to Tabatabai. In line with Islamic thought, true and lasting happiness can only be attained in the Hereafter, and happiness in this life, no matter how acutely and deeply felt, is merely a shadow of the true happiness of the believers who have attained God’s permission to enter Paradise.

Abstract

Abstract: This article analyzes the activities of Islamic organizations formed by the elite kiai and lora in Pamekasan, namely the Forum Kiai Muda (FKM) Madura, where the production of Islamic religious thoughts and movements can organize massively and is able to form layered sectarianism in Pamekasan Madura. As an Islamic religious movement, FKM’s vision is to anticipate and avoid the Madura region from all forms of teaching deviations and understanding congregation. There are four types of religious irregularities that are the main targets, namely Shî‘ah, Wahabi, Liberal, and blasphemy, which they later abbreviate as SYIBILIP. These four understandings are great enemies for Islam. The mention of FKM as a religious mass organization that moves in the political area refers to their strategic roles and functions that actively involve themselves in many political dynamics, both at the regional and central levels. At the regional level, FKM’s political strategic roles and functions are clearly illustrated in the political cooperation they have built with political party elites at the regional level. Abstract

This study analyzes how digital da‘wah constructs the relationship between hadith and science, applying John F. Haught’s typology as an analytical lens. As digital platforms increasingly shape the circulation of religious knowledge, the boundaries between revelation and scientific rationality become blurred, requiring closer attention to how authority is produced online. Through qualitative observations of several accounts on Instagram (@nurliya_alqurantulis), TikTok (@1menittojannah, @hadidjayatech, and @edimujiono19), and Facebook (Zulfa Khairi and Arie Elreal), this study shows that science functions less as an epistemic partner and more as a symbolic tool. The discourse loosely aligns with Haught’s confirmation and conflict models but does so superficially, using scientific references as legitimizing devices that reinforce scriptural authority rather than fostering meaningful dialogue. This shift, from a hermeneutical paradigm of ta’wil to a digital-verificative paradigm, suggests that religious truth is increasingly constructed through visual performance and rapid verification logics. The study’s contribution lies in the formulation of the concept of virtual scientific apologetics, namely a pattern of faith-defense within digital culture in which scientific symbols are mobilized to construct an image of religious modernity, thereby reducing the methodological autonomy of science. The concept enriches the epistemic transformation in contemporary Islamic digital discourses in Indonesia. It also offers a critical analysis of representational tendencies that reduce science to a mere instrument for legitimizing doctrine.

Abstract

This study examines the discursive contestation surrounding the hadith al-Ḥamw al-Mawt (The in-law is Death) within Indonesian digital Islam. Drawing on Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach and Campbell's theory of Digital Religion, the study analyzes the Instagram-based da‘wah content produced by the account @ismaelkholilie as a site where religious meaning and authority are actively constructed and contested. It argues that the hadith is recontextualized from a classical moral injunction into a digital narrative addressing infidelity, family ethics, and mahram boundaries in contemporary Muslim households. The findings demonstrate that social media functions not merely as a medium of religious dissemination but as a discursive arena in religious authority negotiated and reconfigured through digital credibility, algorithmic visibility, and audience interactivity. By situating Indonesia as a critical site of digital religious practice, this article contributes to broader debates on religious authority and meaning-making in Digital Islam. Keywords: Digital hadith, infidelity, al-Ḥamw al-Mawt, religious authority, digital religion

Abstract

This article problematizes the use of satirical narratives in TikTok-based digital da'wah that quote hadiths on the hijab, focusing on how satire functions both as moral critique and as a mechanism for producing stigma against Muslim women. This study examines how the TikTok account @musuhwanita constructs discourse through hadith-based satire and how these narratives shape social relations between men and women as well as configurations of religious authority in digital spaces. The central research question asks how discursive structures, social cognition, and ideological contexts operate in the satirical representation of the hijab. Empirically, the study is limited to an analysis of video content and audience comments published between August and September 2024, employing Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis. This analysis is conducted from an Islamic normative perspective grounded in the principles of amr ma'ruf nahy munkar and da'wah digital ethics. This study contributes to digital Islamic studies by demonstrating how satirical da'wah reproduces and negotiates the meanings of hadith, hijab, and the representation of Muslim women within contemporary configurations of online religious authority.

Abstract

The digital reproduction of weakly authenticated hadiths used to support the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM/C) exacerbates health risks. It reinforces patriarchal bias within Muslim communities, thereby eroding gender justice and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah amidst the democratization of religious authority on social media. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated FGM/C as a harmful practice with serious medical and psychological consequences, some Indonesian Muslim groups continue to perpetuate it through cultural and religious legitimacy, creating tensions between textual tradition, human rights principles, and the dynamics of online discourse. This study addresses this gap by analyzing hadith narratives on the Instagram account @halalcorner, integrating hadith criticism and digital netnography to explore the negotiation of religious authority. Using a qualitative-descriptive netnography approach, data were collected through non-participant observation (March–August 2025) of 12 core posts, 1,256 user comments, and multimodal elements, with purposive sampling based on keywords and engagement levels. The analysis followed Kozinets’ four-stage model (investigation, immersion, interaction, integration), with validity maintained through methodological, researcher, and theoretical triangulation, as well as Cohen’s kappa calculation (yielding 85% agreement), peer debriefing, and an audit trail. The findings reveal a dominance of pro-circumcision narratives (70%), followed by opposition narratives (15%) and neutral narratives (15%). The cited hadith tend to emphasize the notion of ṭahārah rather than legal prescriptions, revealing interpretive biases that contradict the protection of life and lineage. By drawing on feminist theology and digital religion theory, this study underscores the need for online discourse that is more reflective, humanistic, and aligned with Islam’s vision as a mercy for all creation.

Abstract

The debate over non-religious music in Islam reflects an epistemological polarization in Indonesia's digital space, represented by Yufid TV and Bincang Syariah. Yufid TV based on a literal Salafi interpretation, rejecting music by referring to the Islamic doctrine of the hadith. This study aims to investigate how Islamic authority is negotiated through discourse on non-religious music across two prominent digital platforms, Yufid TV and Bincang Syariah.com. Methodologically, it employs Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine the textual, discursive, and socio-cultural dimensions of how both platforms construct, disseminate, and legitimize religious interpretation within the digital public sphere. The findings reveal that Yufid TV constructs a puritan discourse grounded in literalist interpretation, portraying music as a deviation from the purity of Islamic teachings. In contrast, Bincang Syariah adopts a contextual and maqaṣid-oriented approach, framing music as an ethical and cultural expression. Audience responses demonstrate a significant epistemological polarization, reflecting the broader transformation of religious authority from traditional institutions to digital spaces. Academically, this article contributes to contemporary Islamic studies by bridging discourse analysis and digital religion research, highlighting how online media functions as a new arena for ijtihad and the negotiation of religious legitimacy within modern Muslim societies

Abstract

This study highlights the importance of contextual interpretation in the dissemination of ḥadīths on social media, particularly regarding gender dynamics in marriage. Focusing on the frequently cited ḥadīth about “the wife’s denial of her husband’s kindness,” this research explores how such texts, when shared without adequate context, contribute to gender-biased narratives and reinforce patriarchal stereotypes in online spaces. Employing a netnographic approach, the study examines interactions on Instagram accounts @thesunnah_path and @khalidbasalamahofficial, revealing interpretive patterns which are often lacking critical engagement. To counter this, the research applies the mubādalah framework—an egalitarian hermeneutic emphasizing reciprocity and mutual responsibility in marital relationships. Findings show that decontextualized ḥadīth dissemination risks misinterpretation and exacerbates gender imbalances, while mubādalah offers a constructive alternative that promotes gender justice and equitable values. The study calls for more inclusive and context-aware approaches in digital da‘wa, ensuring that religious teachings align with contemporary ethical and social realities. It affirms the need for transformative interpretive models to prevent religious discourse from being misused or misunderstood in today’s digital age.

Abstract

In contemporary Indonesia, waria-a culturally specific category of gender nonconformity-continue to experience religious marginalization, often justified through rigid readings of Prophetic traditions on cross-dressing (takhannuts). Beyond juridical debate, this exclusion raises fundamental questions of human dignity and religious belonging. This article re-examines canonical hadîts narrations on the mukhannath using Jorge J. E. Gracia’s functional hermeneutics, drawing on reports in Shahîh al-Bukhârî and Shahîh alongside their classical commentaries. The study advances three arguments: first, gender ambiguity was recognized in early Islam as a lived social reality rather than a moral anomaly; second, the hadîts corpus distinguishes between innate disposition (min ashl al-khilqah) and deliberate imitation (tasyabbuh), directing censure toward intentional misconduct; and third, a functional hermeneutic reading reveals an ethical orientation toward mercy, proportionality, and the preservation of human dignity. These findings support a dignity-centered interpretive framework that affirms waria as legitimate worshippers (mushallî) and full moral subjects within the Muslim community.
