Abstract

Abstract

Synthetic dyes, including Crystal Violet (CV), are widely used in the textile and chemical industries and are increasingly released into the environment due to their toxic, mutagenic, and non-biodegradable nature. The purpose of this work is to examine the photocatalytic degradation of CV utilising Fe2O3/CuO heterojunction with monoethanolamine (MEA) as an additive. To maximise its optical and catalytic capabilities, the Fe2O3/CuO photocatalyst was synthesised using different CuO compositions and MEA volumes. Using UV-Visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-DRS) and the Kubelka-Munk technique, the band gap energy was determined. According to the findings, the incorporation of CuO did not show a pronounced effect, but it may contribute to the photocatalytic system through interfacial interactions and improved charge transfer within the Fe2O3/CuO structure. The lowest band gap value and optimal composition were found at 20% CuO, which was further reduced by adding 2 mL MEA. Tests of photocatalytic activity were conducted for 120 minutes when exposed to UV and sunshine. The results showed that CV had a high deterioration efficiency, reaching about 53.87% when exposed to sunshine. The creation of a Fe2O3/CuO heterojunction, which enhances charge separation and decreases electron-hole recombination, is responsible for the improved performance, whereas MEA enhances particle distribution and increases surface area. These results suggest that Fe2O3/CuO with MEA is a promising, economical, and eco-friendly photocatalyst for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with dyes.

Abstract

Polystyrene (PS) microplastics from styrofoam waste are persistent contaminants that are difficult to degrade naturally in aquatic environments and require effective extraction methods for analysis and mitigation. This study aims to determine the optimal conditions of Fe(II) concentration and heating temperature in the Wet Peroxide Oxidation (WPO) method for extracting PS microplastics, as well as to identify their functional groups and elemental composition. The method involved treating polluted water samples using WPO solution consisting of Fe(II) as a catalyst and 30% H₂O₂ as an oxidizing agent, with Fe(II) concentrations of 0.075 M, 0.1 M, and 0.125 M, and heating temperatures of 60°C, 75°C, and 90°C. Microplastic identification was conducted using FTIR and XRF instruments. The results showed that the optimal Fe(II) concentration was 0.125 M, yielding 1.27 grams of microplastics, while the optimal temperature was 60°C, yielding 2.58 grams of microplastics. FTIR characterization confirmed the presence of characteristic PS functional groups, including C-H bending of the benzene ring at 753.22 cm⁻¹ and aliphatic C-H stretching at 2919.27 cm⁻¹, which were also detected in samples from enclosed environments. XRF analysis under optimal conditions indicated that the elemental composition of the extracted microplastics was not entirely pure due to residual contaminants. These findings confirm the effectiveness of the WPO method for extracting PS microplastics under optimized operational conditions.

Abstract

Fly ash, a byproduct of coal combustion produced continuously, poses significant environmental risks if not utilized effectively. Its high silica content presents potential for conversion into silica xerogel, which can function as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions such as Cr³⁺. This study aims to analyze the SiO₂ content in synthesized silica xerogel using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis and to determine its optimum adsorption capacity based on variations in pH and Cr³⁺ ion concentration. Optimization was carried out at varying pH levels (2–6) and concentrations (100–300 ppm). XRF analysis revealed that the SiO₂ content in fly ash pretreated with 3M HCl was 54.167%, while the synthesized silica xerogel exhibited an increased SiO₂ content of 69.09%, with a %yield of 54.825%, indicating a relatively high silica purity. Adsorption tests showed maximum adsorption capacity at pH 4 and a Cr³⁺ concentration of 200 ppm, reaching 26.76 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model with a determination coefficient of R² = 0.9509, indicating a strong fit between the model and the experimental data. These findings suggest that silica xerogel derived from fly ash holds promise as an effective adsorbent for heavy metal wastewater treatment. Abstract

Contamination by heavy metal ions such as Cu²⁺ in water sources poses a serious environmental issue due to their toxic effects on living organisms. This study aims to evaluate the adsorption kinetics of Cu²⁺ ions using silica xerogel synthesized from fly ash. The synthesis was carried out via the sol-gel method, and material characterization was performed using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to determine the silica content. The adsorption process was conducted in batch mode with contact time variations of 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes. Analysis results showed that the fly ash contained 54.167% silica, and the optimal adsorption capacity was achieved at 150 minutes with a value of 44.982 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics were best described by the pseudo-second-order model, indicated by a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.99947, suggesting that the adsorption process follows a chemisorption mechanism. These findings imply that silica xerogel derived from fly ash has significant potential as an effective adsorbent for environmental remediation of Cu²⁺ ion contamination.

Abstract

The increasing activity of the textile industry has led to a surge in wastewater containing synthetic dyes such as Malachite Green, which are toxic and resistant to natural degradation. This study aims to investigate the adsorption kinetics of Malachite Green using silica xerogel synthesized from fly ash as an environmentally friendly adsorbent. The synthesis was conducted using the sol-gel method, involving washing with 3 M HCl, extraction with 7 M NaOH, and re-precipitation using HCl until hydrogel formation, followed by drying to produce xerogel. XRF analysis showed an increase in SiO₂ content from 44.06% to 69.09%, indicating successful silica purification. Adsorption tests revealed a maximum capacity of 21.329 mg/g with an optimal contact time of 90 minutes. Kinetic analysis indicated that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order model with an R² value of 0.983, suggesting a chemisorption mechanism involving interactions between silanol groups (-SiOH) on the xerogel surface and dye molecules. These findings demonstrate that fly ash-based silica xerogel has significant potential as an effective, sustainable, and economical adsorbent for dye wastewater treatment in the textile industry.
