Abstract

Background: Norovirus has become a major cause of severe outbreaks of gastroenteritis since the discovery of the rotavirus vaccine, with the main symptom being diarrhea. Until now, research on the epidemiological analysis of norovirus has not been carried out at Regional Public Hospital (RSUD) Dr. Soetomo, Surabaya. Purpose: This study aims to provide clinical epidemiology data and an analysis of norovirus infections in children with diarrhea at Regional Public Hospital (RSUD) Dr. Soetomo, Surabaya, Indonesia, including the prevalence of norovirus infection in each age group and sex, its clinical appearance, and its seasonal variation. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in children aged 1–60 months hospitalized for diarrhea in RSUD Dr. Soetomo between April 2013 and March 2014. Identification of the virus in the stool was done by norovirus enzyme immunoassay Quick NaviTM Noro2. The proportion, age, sex, clinical symptoms, and patterns of the norovirus seasonal data were calculated. Results: Norovirus was detected in 64 samples (19%) of the 340 stool samples, with a mean patient age of 11.75 months; it was mostly found in patients less than 24 months of age (95%), and 64% were male. The monthly pattern of norovirus infection was mostly found in November, followed by May and April. The clinical symptoms were fever (72%), vomiting (66%), bloating (59%), abdominal cramps (34%), perianal inflammation (27%), abdominal distension (16%), and seizures (8%). Conclusion: The prevalence of norovirus was found to be high in patients with diarrhea aged 1–60 months hospitalized in RSUD Dr. Soetomo, with a proportion of 19%. Further research is needed to determine the severity of norovirus infection.

Abstract

Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli are pathogenic bacteria that cause foodborne diseases that often contaminate food and are harmful to human health. Sales of unpackaged (bulk) sausages accompanied by poor hygiene and environmental sanitation conditions have a high potential for Salmonella and Escherichia coli contamination. The purpose of this study was to compare the contamination level of bacterial, Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli in bulk and packaged chicken sausages as well as to determine the relationship between the hygiene and sanitation of traders and the level of bacterial contamination, Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli contamination in chicken sausages sold at traditional markets in Surabaya, Indonesia. This research is a cross-sectional study and purposive sampling method. The results showed that the level of bacterial contamination in the bulk chicken sausage was higher (5.98 Log CFU/g) than in packaged chicken sausage (4.83 Log CFU/g). Salmonella sp. contamination in the bulk chicken sausage was higher (44.44%) than in packaged chicken sausage (10.00%) and Escherichia coli contamination in the bulk chicken sausage was higher (22.22%) than in packaged chicken sausage (20.00%). There is a significant relationship between the hygiene and sanitation of traders with the contamination level of bacteria, Salmonella sp., and Escherichia coli in bulk and packaged chicken sausages.

Abstract

Coliform, Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. are bacterial pathogen that causes foodborne disease which often contaminates food that is harmful to human health. The sale of meatballs without packaging accompanied by poor hygiene and environmental sanitation conditions has a high potential for contamination by Coliform, Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. The purpose of this study was to identify the contamination of Coliform, Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp in bulk and packaged meatballs sold at PD Pasar Surya in the East Surabaya Region and to determine the relationship between the hygiene and sanitation of traders on the level of bacterial contamination, Coliform contamination, Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp in bulk and packaged meatballs. This research is a cross sectional study and the sample was taken by purposive sampling method. The relationship between hygiene and sanitation of traders with microbiological quality of bulk meatballs and packaged meatballs using Chi Square. The results showed that the level of total bacterial contamination was higher in bulk meatballs (66.6%) compared to packaged meatballs (40%), Total Coliform bulk meatballs were 60% higher than packaged meatballs (40%), Escherichia coli meatballs Bulk meat (40%) is higher than packaged meatballs (20%), Salmonella sp in bulk meatballs (33.3%) is higher than packaged meatballs (40%). There is a significant relationship between the hygiene and sanitation of traders and the level of bacterial contamination, Coliform, Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp.

Abstract

It is quite common knowledge that some traditional herbal medicine sellers used plastic bottles of mineral water as a storage medium for their traditional herbal medicine. Even though the allotment of mineral water bottles is dispossible, it cannot be used again after the contents run out. This problem about the packaging must be addressed. When viewed from the visual aspect, the presentation of traditional herbal medicine still tends to be monotonous in terms of packaging. Whereas packaging can influence consumers to give a positive response, good packaging will optimize profits. Therefore, this service activity targets several improvements in handling packaging problems for Jamu bu Uri products, with the aim of increasing the marketing of traditional herbal products.

Abstract

Identify the type of ectoparasite prevalence and infestation pattern of ectoparasite on Dabung duck in Bangkalan Madura regency. This research conducted from February to April 2022 with sample of 55 tails and identified in parasitology laboratory of the Veterinary Parasitology Division, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya with the permanent mounting method without coloring. This research was a descriptive research, study survey, and cross sectional study analytical. The type of ectoparasite that attacked Dabung duck in Geger subdistrict, Dabung village and Galis subdistrict, Pekaan Dajah village were Menacanthus stramineus, Menopon gallinae, Lipeurus caponis with a prevalence of 100% from a sample 55 tails of Dabung duck. The analysis results of infestation pattern of ectoparasite infestation on Dabung ducks used correspondence text on the body regions of Dabung ducks in Geger subdistrict, Dabung village showed that M. stramineus ticks on chest region, M. gallinae in head neck region and L. caponis in wing region. Burneh subdistrict, Burneh village founded M. stramineus ticks in abdomen region, M. gallinae in head-neck region, and L. caponis in wing region. Galis subdistrict, Pakaan Dajah village showed that M stramineus lice in head-neck region, L. caponis in wing region and M. gallinae in spine region.

Abstract

Laurus nobilis is one of the most well-known, most frequently used plants is from Lauraceae family which contains up 2.500 species that grow in the subtropics and tropics of the Mediterranean region and Indonesia. This study was supposed to investigate the antimicrobial eff ect of L.nobilis leaves ethanol extract on Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonellae typhi, and Escherichia coli. This preliminary study examined the antimicrobial eff ect of L.nobilis leaves ethanol extract. The method used Agar-well diff usion for determination of the zone of inhibition and the minimum bactericidal concentration to investigate the activity of L.nobilis leaves ethanol extract at 100% concentration . The results revealed that extract of L. nobilis leaves had the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with a zone of inhibition (16.3 ±1.5 mm), Staphylococcus aureus with (14.5±0.5 mm), and weak antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli (11.3±1.1mm). Also, through the minimum bactericidal concentration experiment, the L.nobilis leaves ethanol extract had activity on Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonellae typhi, it's killed the bacteria in all concentration start it from 5í—107 to 5í—104. But the activity on Escherichia coli just weaken concentration 5í—107 and 106. This research has concluded that the L.nobilis leaves ethanol extract exhibited a signifi cant antimicrobial eff ect against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonellae typhi then Escherichia coli that is considered a kind of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the Total Plate Count and total Staphylococcus aureus count of beef sold in wet markets in Mulyorejo sub-district below the National Standard Indonesia (SNI 7388:2009) about maximum limit of microbial contamination in food or not. Total of twenty four samples of beef purchased from traditional markets of Tempurejo, Krempyeng Yamuri, Pacar Keling, and Menur in Mulyorejo sub-district Surabaya were examined by Total Plate Count using pour plate method. The sample was also cultured in Mannitol Salt Agar. The colony suspected to be S. aureus were taken for identification. The identification of S. aureus consists of isolation in Mannitol Salt Agar, Gram staining, catalase test, and coagulase test. Total plate count result showed that four samples were exceeding the National Standard of Indonesia SNI 7388:2009 or 1x106 CFU/g and the rest were below the maximum Total Plate Count in SNI. The highest Total Plate Count result was 1,9x106 CFU/g and the lowest was 7,8x104 CFU/g. The result of identification showed that 100% samples examined were contaminated by S. aureus with the highest result was 2,9x104 CFU/g and the lowest result was 4,3x103 CFU/g or exceeding the SNI 7388:2009.

Abstract

This study aimed to detect the presence of eae gene in E. coli from chicken meat sold at the traditional market Surabaya. Identification of bacteria was carried out in several stages, inoculated on pre-enrichment media using Buffered Peptone Water (BPW), planting on Levine's Eosin Methylene Blue Agar (L-EMB) media, suspected colonies on L-EMB were subjected to Triple Sugar Iron Agar (TSIA) and Indol test for the confirmation of E. coli. The confirmed E. coli isolates were tested by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to determine the presence of the eae gene. The results showed that E. coli could be identified in 28 out of 100 (28%) chicken meat samples, and eae gene was detected in three E. coli isolates (11%).

Abstract

Background: Repeat breeding is a notable reproductive problem where cows do not conceive after several insemination attempts, and it is typically defined as three or more unsuccessful attempts. This results in reduced reproductive efficiency, lower economic sustainability of the dairy farm, and decreased milk quality in dairy cattle.  Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in milk quality in Friesian Holstein (FH) dairy cows subjected to repeat breeding at KUD Tani Wilis Sendang, Tulungagung Regency, focusing on the milk’s density, as well as fat, Total Solid (TS), and Solid Non-Fat (SNF) content. Method:  Thirty-two milk samples were collected, including 10 from normal cows for comparison. The samples were analyzed using a Lactoscan to examine the density, fat content, total solid (TS), and solid non-fat (SNF) of milk. The data was subjected to Independent T-Test analysis. Results: The results revealed significant differences (p<0.05) between repeat breeding and normal cow milk samples in terms of specific gravity, fat content, and Total Solids (TS), but not in Solid Non-Fat (SNF). Repeat breeding cow milk exhibited a higher specific gravity (1.0282 vs. 1.0260) but lower fat content (1.08% vs. 4.18%) and Total Solids (9.38% vs. 12.73%) compared to normal cow milk. However, there was no significant difference for Solid Non-Fat (8.36% for repeat breeding vs. 8.55% for normal cows). Conclusion: Repeat breeding cow milk showed increased specific gravity but decreased fat content and Total Solids compared to normal cow milk, while Solid Non-Fat remained relatively consistent.
