Abstract

Research on the extraction of cadmium(II) ion has been performed using the emulsion liquid membrane technique. This research used laboratory experimental method using benzoyl acetone as a carrier, kerosene as a membrane, nitric acid solution as an internal phase, span 80 and span 20 as a surfactant, and cadmium(II) solution as a sample. The present study was conducted to determine the optimum conditions of cadmium(II) ion extraction in solutions comprising variations in surfactant concentration of spans 80 and span 20 mixtures (1.5–3.5%) and variations in the ratio of emulsion/external phase (1:5–1:7). Determination of remaining of cadmium(II) ion concentration in the sample was analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometer at 519 nm wavelength. The results showed that the concentration of mixed surfactants (span 80 and span 20) which resulted in a maximum percent of extraction was 2.5% with 60.11% extraction percentage. In addition, the volume ratio of the emulsion/external phase gave a maximum extraction percentage at a ratio of 1:5.5 with an extraction percent of 78.03%.

Abstract

Neem plant is a widely used in agriculture as green fertilizer, pesticides and insecticides. People usually use the leaves as for lowering blood sugar, skin diseases, preventing infection, and reducing itching. This study aims to identify and determine tannins levels containing in neem leaves extracts. This study applied extraction by maceration method using 2 different solvents, water and ethanol. Tannin is a metabolite secondary compound belong to phenolic compound groups which oxidized easily by strong oxidization agent (potassium permanganate) so then its determination utilized permanganate method (Lowenthal-Procter). The results showed that neem leaves in 250 mL water solvent contains 0.55% of tannin, while in 250 mL ethanol solvent and concentration of 96% contains 0.27% of tannin.

Abstract

One of the potential plantations in Dolo and Labuan area is coconut plant. Coconut water as one of the coconut product has not been widely used, even it contains many minerals. Potassium contained in coconut water can be utilized an additional mineral intake for human. This study aimed to determine potassium (K) levels in green coconut (coconut viridis) water from Dolo and Labuan areas using spectrophotometric. The results showed that the average concentration of K in green coconut water samples from Dolo area was 162 ppm, while from Labuan area was 154 ppm. This study concluded that the higher level of potassium is in green coconut water samples from Dolo area.

Abstract

Adsorbent has been widely used in the purification of used cooking oil to improve their quality. This study aimed to determine the quality of cooking oil after adsorbing with tamarindus indica L. seeds. Parameters of the oil quality were color, free fatty acid, peroxide number, and moisture levels. The oil color was determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, free fatty acid level using acid-base titration method, peroxide number level using iodometric titration method, and moisture level using gravimetric method. Concentration of adsorbent on the adsorption process varied by 1%, 3% and 5% with two types of cooking oil sample namely traditional cooking oil and brand X cooking oil. The results showed that the oil color became brighter by adding adsorbent. Free fatty acid, peroxide number, and moisture levels decreased by increasing the adsorbent concentration. The best result was obtained at 5% adsorbent concentration. Traditional cooking oil decreased in absorbance from 0.2955 to 0.0610, free fatty acid level decreased from 2.7300% to 0.8300%, peroxide number level decreased from 7 meq/kg to 2.4 meq/kg, and moisture level decreased from 1.5191% to 0.1495%. While for the cooking oil of brand X decreased in absorbance from 0.4355 to 0.1860, free fatty acid level decreased from 1.1900% to 0.6600%, peroxide number level decreased from 4 meq/kg to 1.3 meq/kg, and moisture level decreased from 1.4198% to 0.1197%.

Abstract

Study on the effect of basil (Ocimum sanctum Linn) leaf extract has been done as a repellent against mosquito (Aedes aegypti). This study aimed to examine the effect of basil leaf extract on Aedes aegypti using an electrical device. This study usedan extraction method with ethanol 96%solvent followed by evaporation to obtain concentrated basil leaf extract. The concentrated extract was diluted to concentrations of 20, 30, 40 and 50% w/v. The results showed that the concentration of basil leaf extract 50% eliminatedmost mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti).
