Abstract

Abstract

Potential evaporation (ETp) can be calculated by ETp models climatological parametrs. Among them, the Penman model is most frequently used for ETp estimation. The penman model requires five climatic parameters : temperature, relative humidity, wind, saturation vapor pressure, and net radiation. It also uses complicated unit conversions and lengthy calculation. There are a simple models such as : Jensen - Haise models, Hargreaves, Radiation, Turc's, and Makkink's model. These models that requires only two climatic parameters, temperature and incident radiation.

Abstract

SAMBAS, E. N., KUSMANA, C., PRASETYO, L. B. & PARTOMIHARDJO, T. 2018. Vegetation analysis and population structure of plants at Mount Endut forested area, Gunung Halimun Salak National Park, Banten, Java,Indonesia. Reinwardtia 17 (1): 39–53. — Study of vegetation structure and species composition at Mount Endut was carried out by using transect and plot methods. Data of trees, saplings and seedlings were enumerated from four transects measuring 10 m × 2,000 m in four directions of slopes i.e. North, South, East and West. In total there were 180 species of trees and saplings belonging to 105 genera and 51 families. Tree density and basal area indicate the variation and the differences in each of the sampling locations. Density of saplings and abundance of seedlings tend to be low in locations with high density and basal areas at tree level. Tree species having higher Importance Value were Castanopsis acuminatissima, Schima wallichii, C. argentea, Quercus gemelliflora, and Altingia excelsa. Castanopsis acuminatissima, Garcinia rostrata, S. wallichii, Symplocos cochinchinensis, and Prunus arborea were saplings which had highest density, while Ophiorrhiza marginata, Cyathea contaminans, Pinanga coronata,C. acuminatissima, and G. rostrata were the most abundant listed seedlings at the study site. At least 27 tree species (21.91%) were recorded as relatively rare (presence represented by only 1–2 individuals), thus requiring special attention in the management of the area.

Abstract

The rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) genetic characteristics consist of nucleotide polymorphisms, haplotypes, genetic distances, and relationships which are important for their conservation effort in Indonesia. We sequenced mitochondrial DNA D-loop hypervariable III fragments from five rhinoceros hornbill individuals at Safari Park Indonesia I and Ragunan Zoo, which were isolated using Dneasy® Blood and Tissue Kit Spin-Column Protocol, Qiagen. D-loop fragment replication was done by PCR technique using DLBuce_F (5'-TGGCCTTTCTCCAAGGTCTA-3') and DLBuce_R (5'-TGAAGG AGT TCATGGGCTTAG-3') primer. Thirty SNP sites were found in 788 bp D-loop sequences of five rhinoceros hornbill individuals and each individual had a different haplotype. The average genetic distance between individuals was 3.09% and all individuals were categorized into two groups (Group I: EC6TS, EC1RG, EC2TS and Group II: EC9TS, EC10TS) with a genetic distance of 3.99%. This result indicated that the two groups were distinct subspecies. The genetic distance between Indonesian and Thai rhinoceros hornbills was 10.76%. Five Indonesian rhinoceros hornbill individuals at Safari Park Indonesia I and Ragunan Zoo probably came from different populations, ancestors, and two different islands. This study can be of use for management consideration in captive breeding effort at both zoos. The D-loop sequence obtained is a useful character to distinguish three rhinoceros hornbill subspecies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Community forest that privately owned at Kuningan Regency, West Java Province, have showed forest cover improvement at average of 5.86% during 2003 –2009. The main factor which contributes to this improvement was economic motivation of owners as a response to growing market of timber originated from community forest.  This forest potentially serves as protected area outside state forest in land use plan of Kuningan district. Due to its characteristic as common-pool resources in the context of its protection function, privately owned community forest requires certain institutional arrangement to enable sustainable forest management resulting sustainable benefit for public. The aim of this study is to assess policy framework and its implementation designed to promote sustainable community forest development. The framework for implementation analysis was applied in this research with emphasis on the policy variable. The result showed that existing policy framework is weak to support sustainable management of community forest. They were characterized by unclear formulation of concepts in policy documents, inappropriate causal theory, unbalance financial resource allocation, very much detail and almost rigid in technical guidelines thereby hindering the achievement of policy objectives. Keywords: community forest, sustainable forest management, policy variable, policy analysis

Abstract

Private forest at Kuningan district, West Java province, has shown increasing coverage at average of 5,86% during 2003-2009. The forest has served as protection area beside state protection forest in Kuningan district. The forestland status is private property whereas forthe owner has served as production forest. The aim of this research was to assess performance of that private forest management, using set of criteria and indicators for sustainable community-based forest management developed by the Indonesian Ecolabelling Institute/LEI (2002). The result shows that management practiced fail to fulfill the standard. Nevertheless private property rights of the forest land enabled the owner to invest in forest development for economic benefit, which public perceived having a positive impact in the form of environmental services. Lack of technical and institutional capacity in forest management need to be improved to enable the owner gain economic benefit while provide environmental services for public. Key words: private forest, sustainable forest management, protection area, institution
