Abstract

Growth and yield of oil palm is largely determined by climatic conditions especially in the dry season.  The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of planting date and irrigation in the dry season of 2015 on the growth and production of palm oil in 2016.  The data collecting was conducted from June to October 2016 at a plantation company, Southern Lampung.  Treatments were arranged by factorial (3x2) in randomized block design with 7 replications.  The first factor was age categories consisted of mature trees planted 2001 (TD 2001), young trees planted 2009 (TM 2009), and young trees planted 2010 (TM 2010).  The second factor was irrigation (no irrigation and with irrigation). The irrigation used was bulk irrigation with rotation of once in a weeks during dry season (September-October).  Observed variables were number of broken frond, spear frond, dried frond, female inflorencence, and bunches yield.  Data was analyzed by analysis of the variance (ANOVA), and the differences of the mean were analyzed by Tuckey at 5% level of significant difference.  Irrigation decreased number of broken frond and dry frond. Irrigation increased fresh fruit bunch yield of certain months in current and next year. Age categories (young and mature) had no signicantly effect on number of bunch and fresh fruit bunch per tree. However there was interaction between age categories and irrigation on the average of bunch weight. Keywords : growth, oil palm, rainfall, water deficit, yield

Abstract

Sustainable cropping systems are part of a sustainable agricultural system in a broader sense. Some of the pillars of sustainable cropping systems commonly applied in Indonesia, such as vegetation succession, polyculture systems, cropping patterns, crop rotation, are discussed in this review. Furthermore, an analysis of the sustainable cropping system model was carried out: (1). Based on shade coffee plantations that are widely applied in Indonesian coffee plantations, (2). Based on the agricultural cultivation landscape in Bali Province known as the Subak system, which UNESCO has registered as a world heritage site, (3). Based on agroforest rubber plantations which are the local wisdom of Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Abstract

West Lampung Regency still survives as the central area of coffee production in Lampung Province while production of other districts so far are declining. This research aims to study the ethno-agronomy of coffee cultivation in West Lampung which is tolerant to rainfall variability. This research was a survey located in Sumberjaya District and Sekincau District, West Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, Indonesia year 2018—2019 which from each subdistrict two villages was selected purposively and from each village one farmer group was chosen. Primary data were collected through interview, Focused Group Discussion (FGD), and observation of coffee farm. Secondary data were obtained from the BPS Lampung and rainfall data from Radin Intan Climate Station. The results showed that the area of coffee plantations in West Lampung in the last decade has decreased by 0,64% per year but productivity has increased by 1,42% per year, and in West Lampung, which is a mountainous region, the number of rainy days was negatively correlated with coffee yield while the number of dry months was positively correlated. Whereas in North Lampung, which is a medium elevation area, coffee productivity correlated with sufficient rainfall and productivity was negatively correlated with the number of dry months of the previous year. Coffee farmers in West Lampung have perception the need for various adaptation measures of coffee farm maintenance, which grafting adult coffee tree with superior local robusta clones is a typical ethno-agronomy practiced by coffee farmers in West Lampung to obtain high coffee yield.

Abstract

To improve yield and cup quality, mature coffee tree as rootstock could be grafted with scion of selected genotype. This research aimed to study growth performance of mature trees resulted from intra and inter-specific grafting on Robusta coffee. The research was arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. There were 12 treatments of entrees/under-stump genotype for coffee grafting including 8 treatments of intraspecific local Robusta/Robusta grafting and 4 treatments of interspecific coffee grafting of Robusta/Liberica and Arabica/Robusta. The results showed that intraspecific grafting of Robusta/Robusta, Robusta/Liberica, and Arabica/Robusta resulted in grafting mortality of 9.8%, 10.9%, and 24.8%, respectively. Until 28 weeks after grafting, branch growth variables were significantly affected by scion/rootstock of Robusta/Robusta, Robusta/Liberica, and Arabica/Robusta grafting. Grafted Arabica/Robusta coffee showed the poor growth performance. In second year of Robusta/Robusta and Robusta/Liberica growth, generative growth of cherry inflorescence per branch and number of cherries per inflorescence were not affected by scion and rootstock genotypes. Leaf and branch growth were very important variables correlating with other variables.
