Abstract

Transaction costs arise as a result of uncertainty in the transaction environment. Vertical integration of farmers in an institution will reduce uncertainty and will reduce transaction costs. Transaction costs will affect income and will ultimately affect the level of welfare.  The objective of this research is to compare the transaction costs, income, and welfare between plasma palm oil farmers and independent palm oil farmers. This research used a quantitative research approach with survey method. The research was conducted in Penawartama and Aji Baru sub district, Tulang Bawang Regency. The research location was chosen purposively with the consideration of sub district are the center of palm oil smallholdings. Data collection techniques were used household survey with simple random sampling. Sample size is 152 farmers consisting of 76 plasma farmers and 76 independent farmers. The transaction costs paid by plasma farmers is smaller thanthose paid by independent farmers. Income per hectare of plasma smallholder is higher than the income of the independent smallholder. Even though, palm oil farmers in Tulang Bawang Regency, both plasma and independent farmers are in the prosperous category.

Abstract

This study aims were, first to measure the level of farmers’ willingness to pay the external cost to improve the environment and second, examine the determinant factors. The experiment was conducted in District Sumberjaya and Sekincau, West Lampung District during June-October 2009. Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) was used to answer the first purpose, while ordinal logit regression analysis was used to answer the second purpose. Factors of farmland area, land productivity, household income, educational level, number of family labor, and knowledge of farmers about the benefits of forests had positive influence on WTP while distance of farmers’ house to the forest had negative influence. The increase of WTP was needed to reduce environmental damage due to forest conversion to coffee plantation; moreover, environment improvement hopefully could restore the function of forest where coffee trees were planted.

Abstract

Understanding the linkage of a product flows along the commodity chain is important as the starting point in determining a sustainability strategy. The scope of the rice commodity value chain in this study involves farmers' rice production, small-scale rice mills and the home industry of rice milling. The study aims to identify commodity chains of rice in Lampung Province. The primary data from the rice processing industry and rice trading using a questionnaire guidance. The purposive sampling method is used by considering the rice milling business's representation related to the commodity chain. Qualitative analysis of the pattern of relations between business actors carried out with the agri-food value chain approach. The pattern of chain starts from the process of transforming raw materials into the manufactured and the final product until it reaches the end consumers. The commodity chain involved the flow of production, information (price and marketing chain), and income flow. Generally, there are 3-5 rice flour milling units in the village, with a 50-120 kg/month production volume. The average price of rice flour is Rp. 12,500/kg. The ability to supply paddy grain for milling is 2-5 tons/agent/week. Rice mills generally have 2-6 suppliers of fixed paddy grain. Information on product flow diagrams includes product types, ease of obtaining goods, time dependence, and ease of selling goods. Information on paddy grain prices on the supplier line is an average of Rp 4,500/kg. The price of rice in the distribution line to the wholesale rice trader is Rp. 8,500. Meanwhile, the income stream provides information on the value of rice production revenue of 59.7 tons per month attaint to Rp 40.3 million with a profit amount of Rp 318/kg.

Abstract

Variability of Coffee Cultivars in Lampung. Province of Lampung is production region of Robusta coffee in Indonesia. Farmer plant seedling of progeny resulted in high variability of coffee bean production. High yield clones then were used as grafting material to improve coffee production. The research aimed to study variability of coffee cultivars in Lampung and factors affecting its production. Respondent farmers and coffee fields to be surveyed were determined by purposive sampling method from 3 district of West Lampung, Tanggamus, and North Lampung. Three sub-districts were taken from each district to choose a farmers group. The results showed that there were 27 cultivars found in location including 25 cultivars were Robusta coffee and the rest were Arabica and Liberica. In each district, the compositions of dominant cultivars were different. Farmers were able to describe the cultivars based on characteristics of fruits and beans, leaves, shoots, and branches. Some cultivars come from other province of outside Lampung. Dominance indices and richness of cultivars together with elevation level of coffee field had significant negative effects on coffee productivity, while fertilize doses had positive effects.

Abstract

Water is one of important things for the process of rice field farming. Irrigation as one of water sources for rice farming needs to be managed and maintained. The role of farmers is very important for irrigation management efforts.  The contribution of farmers in the repair and management of irrigation can be realized in the form of willingness to pay (WTP) of irrigation management services. The benefit of paying for irrigation management services is that it can be used for better irrigation management and maintained water adequacy. This study aims to determine the value of willingness to pay from farmers that use irigation from the Way Ketibung’s Irigation Area in Lampung Selatan regency, and the factors influence it.  Data collection was conducted in Sidomulyo and Candipuro district, Lampung Selatan in Juni - September 2020.  The number of samples of this research is 100 farmers who used irrigation for rice farming selected by using  propotionate random sampling method from total population of 1223 farmers. The data are analyzed using contingent valuation method (CVM) and ordinal logistic.  Based on the research results, average WTP value of irrigation management service in the Way Ketibung’s Irigation Area was IDR97,400.00 /Year, or IDR48,700.00 /Planting Session. The factors that influenced were land area and farmer’s knowledge of irrigation function
