Abstract

The linguistic landscape, or "schoolscape," in public elementary schools in Medan, Indonesia, is a relatively new area of study in linguistics. This descriptive qualitative research explores language use within the school environment, considering its social and cultural aspects. The study aims to analyze the linguistic forms, usage, and functions present in the linguistic landscape of these schools. Data from photographs capturing linguistic units was collected from four public elementary schools in Medan. This study employed systematic sampling, specifically purposive sampling, to select public elementary schools in Medan based on criteria related to the city's main areas with diverse linguistic units. The findings reveal various linguistic forms, including acronyms, words, phrases, sentences, and monolingual and bilingual texts. Language within the linguistic landscape serves informational and symbolic functions, providing information to readers and reflecting the relationship between language and power through linguistic signs associated with local leaders. While Indonesian is the dominant language used, there is a lack of representation of specific ethnic or cultural identities. The findings have global implications, revealing language's role in education and its impact on social and cultural dynamics. Understanding linguistic forms, usage, and functions provides valuable insights for education policies promoting language diversity, skills, and cultural inclusivity. The study suggests enriching the linguistic landscape by considering the use of local or minority languages existing in the region. This study contributes to understanding linguistic landscapes in Indonesian schools and highlights the importance of incorporating diverse languages to promote language proficiency and cultural preservation.

No one person is immune to the temptations of such a life and seeing it, understanding it for what it is, and making those choices is all we can do. No one remains untouched by the darkness.

Abstract

This study explores the conceptual metaphor of "Mangroves are machines" within the framework of ecolinguistics, analyzing how language shapes our understanding of mangroves and their role in environmental conservation. This research employs a conceptual metaphor theory to dissect how this metaphor influences public perception, policy discourse, and conservation efforts. The data were taken from discourses circulated within the mangrove conservation. The study reveals that languages disseminated within the conservation area use some specific linguistics expression that eventually led to the comprehension that mangroves can be easily understood in the concept of machineries. This metaphor not only underscores the ecological importance of mangroves but also promotes a mechanistic view of nature that can influence both positive and negative attitudes towards conservation. The findings suggest that while the metaphor effectively communicates the critical functions of mangroves, it also exposes variations of concepts in order to make the term of mangrove more familiar.

Abstract

Metaphor is deeply pervasive in human life. It is not only used in aesthetic or literary languages but also in everyday colloquial speech. This study aims to investigate conceptual metaphor in ecological discourse related to mangrove conservation on the eastern coast of North Sumatra and decipher the underlying ecosophy. The researchers also sought to figure out the ecosophical values reflected in the metaphor using an ecolinguistics perspective. A qualitative method was employed to explore the metaphorical expressions concerning mangroves. The data were collected from a report and an interview related to mangrove conservation at Pantai Sejarah Tourism Centre and Mangrove Conservation in Belawan, North Sumatra. The data were analyzed using Steens Metaphor Identification Process (MIP). The results showed that there are 23 instances of conceptual metaphors, categorized into five metaphorical conceptualizations: mangroves are war, mangroves are people, mangroves are a valuable commodity, mangroves are building, and mangroves are containers. These conceptual metaphors have specific linguistic expressions that establish the metaphors. Each metaphor was examined under the lens of ecosophy to determine whether or not the language used promotes the ecosophy. The implications of the study reflect that conceptual metaphors indeed exist in ecological discourse on mangrove conservation, indicating that mangroves are cognitively conceptualized in peoples minds, talked about, and integrated into everyday life.

Abstract

This study examines politeness and impoliteness in Acehnese speech variations conveyed through various linguistic features, including honorifics, politeness markers, and respectful forms of address. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, commencing with observation in different social settings in Acehnese society to identify instances of polite and impolite speech. The data for this study consists of oral data obtained from 13 informants residing in North Aceh, Aceh Pidie, Aceh Besar, and South West Aceh. Data were collected using direct observation techniques and free recall techniques. To ensure well-documented data collection, the researcher recorded the data in manual notes and electronic recordings. Data analysis was conducted using contextual methods. The results demonstrate that in Acehnese language, the politeness and grammaticality of an utterance are highly dependent on the region of use or dialect. Generally, in Acehnese, language is considered polite if the utterance uses proclitics corresponding to the actor in a sentence. However, in the South West Aceh dialect, this rule does not apply. In this dialect, language politeness does not rely on the regular use of proclitics. Proclitics are usually not used in speech and should be attached to the verb, given in the repetition of the subject as the doer of the action. Additionally, politeness in this language is highly dependent on pronouns. Conversely, the rules for using honorific pronouns in other dialects do not measure politeness and grammaticality.
