Abstract

Hymenoptera is one of the four largest insect order (the other three are Coleoptera, Diptera, and Lepidoptera). There are curerently over 115 000 described Hymenoptera species. It is clear that Hymenoptera is one of the major components of insect biodiversity. However, Hymenoptera biodiversity is affected by ecology, environment, and ecosystem management. In an agricultural areas, the spatial structure, habitat diversity, and habitat composition may vary from cleared landscapes to structurally rich landscape. Thus, it is very likely that such large-scale spatial patterns (landscape effects) may influence local biodiversity and ecological functions. Therefore, the objective of this research were to study diversity and configuration elements of agricultural landscapes at Cianjur Watershed with geographical information sytems (GIS) and its influence on Hymenoptera biodiversity. The structural differences between agricultural landscapes of Nyalindung, Gasol, and Selajambe were characterized by patch analyst with ArcView 3.2 of digital land use data. Results indicated that class of land uses of Cianjur Watershed landscape were housing, mixed gardens, talun and rice, vegetable, and corn fields. Landscape structure influenced the biodiversity of Hymenoptera. Species richness and the species diversity were higher in Nyalindung landscape compare to Gasol and Selajambe landscape. Abstract

Begomovirus infection was identified from tomato growing areas in West Java (Bogor), Central Java (Boyolali), and D.I. Yogyakarta (Kaliurang). Efforts to reduce the infection among others are planting resistance varieties. This research was undertaken to evaluate 14 tomato genotypes for their response to the infection. Dot blot hybridization using nonradioactive (digoxigenin) DNA probe was employed to determine the presence of begomovirus in inoculated plants. Polymerase chain reaction-amplified product of DNA clone of tobacco leaf curl virus –Indonesia was used as a source of DNA probe. All of tomato genotypes evaluated in this study was infected separately by three strain of begomovirus (GVPSlm, GVABy, GVCBgr). Tomato genotypes Bonanza, Jelita, Safira, Permata, Presto, PSPT 8, PSPT 5B, Apel-Belgia, Karibia, Mitra, PSPT 9, Marta, and PSPT 2, showed susceptible or highly susceptible response to the three strains of begomovirus. Exception to those was shown by cv. Intan which resulted in moderate resistance when inoculated with GVCBgr although it resulted susceptible response with the other two strains. Dot-blot hybridization technique was proved to be a powerful tool to detect begomovirus infection in plants showing symptom as well as symptom-less plants. Accumulation of the virus in those plants was relatively high, except in cv. Bonanza and Apel-Belgia. Dot-blot hybridization technique using DIG-labeled DNA probe was able to detect begomovirus DNA in infected tissue up to 10-2 dilution factor. Abstract

Pollinators provide key services to both natural and agricultural ecosystems. Agricultural productivity depends, in part, on pollinator populations from adjacent seminatural habitats. Here we analysed the diversity of pollinator insects and its effect to seed set of mustard (Brassica rapa) planted in agricultural ecosystem near the Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park, West Java. At least 19 species of insects pollinated the mustard, and three species, i.e. Apis cerana, Ceratina sp., and Apis dorsata showed a high abundance. The higher abundance and species richness of pollinators occurred at 08.30-10.30 am and the diversity was related to the number of flowering plants. Insect pollinations increased the number of pods, seeds per pod, seed weights per plant, and seed germination. Key words: diversity, pollinator insects, social bees, solitary bees, seed set, Brassica rapa

Abstract

Pine woolly adelgid is a recently found exotic pest attacking seedling up to grown plants of Pinus merkusii plantations forest. Since its discovery, there were not much information about it. The objectives of this research were to study pine woolly adelgids distribution, symptoms and indicators, and its scale of infestations on Pinus merkusii plantation in Java, to determine the presence of any specific P. merkusii sites invaded by pine woolly adelgids, considering the pests were native to boreal and temperate areas. Hypothesis was pine woolly adelgids infestation on P. merkusii in Java is consistent with their native distribution. There were 9 Forest Management Unit (KPH) with infested P. merkusii plantations which were located at altitude between 900 to 1,700 m asl. with temperature ranging 16-22 °C and air humidity 80-90%. This indicated that Pine Woolly Adelgids required low temperature to survive, which was consistent with their original distribution. Host preference with regard to scale of infestation was closely related to temperature, altitude, and number of trees per hectare. The scale of infestation varied among regions, from light to heavy infested/death of trees.

Abstract

Albizia (Falcataria moluccana) cultivated in Indonesia for timber plantations can increase the farmer’s income, even though albizia became an invasive alien species that can cause the economic and ecological losses. The controlling of invasive species using biological control is an effective method. The purpose of this study was to determine the phytophagous insects on albizia from Java and Hawaii in seedling in Bogor. The experiment was conducted in Carangpulang, Dramaga, Bogor. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized block design using seed origin as a treatment (albizia Java and Hawaii) with 4 replicates. Total number of tree sample was 160 trees. Observations were conducted every 2 weeks until 32 weeks after planting. Identification of insects was conducted in the Laboratory of Insect Biosystematics, IPB. A total of 67 phytophagous insects were collected, 57 species in albizia from Java and 54 species in albizia from Hawaii. There was no difference in abundance and diversity of phytophagous insects on albizia from Java and Hawaii. Larvae of Eurema blanda (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) became an important pest causes leaf defoliation. Furthermore, Hulodes caranea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Margarodes sp. (Hemiptera: Margarodidae), Choristoneura sp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), and Adoxophyes sp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) identified as important pests that have not been reported in the other research. Abstract

Aphid is a sucking insect as a pest and vector of virus diseases plants. The aphids presence on plants are often accompanied by ants that symbiotic on aphid’s colony. Mutualism symbiosis between ants and aphids can hinder natural enemies especially parasitoids to parasitizing aphids. This study aims to explore parasitoid and ant species associated with aphids and determine the level of parasitoid parasitization. The survey was conducted on agricultural crops and weeds in West Java area. Samples were taken by purposive sampling looking at the aphid presence, ant, and mummified colonies. Aphid’s identification was carried out at Insect Biosystematics Laboratory, Department of Plant Protection IPB, whileparasitoid and ant identification was carried out at Entomology Laboratory of Zoology LIPI. The identification results obtained four species of Hymenoptera parasitoid, i.e Adialythus ambiguus, Aphidius matricariae, Praon absinthi (Braconidae) and Psyllaephagus pilossus (Encyrtidae) and eight species of ants of Formicidae family, i.e Dolichoderus sp, Dolichoderus thoracicus, Monomorium destructor, Monomorium floricola, Myrmicaria brunnea, Pheidole javana, Polyrhachis dives, and Technomyrmex albipes. The dominant parasitoid species found was A. matricariae, but the highest level of parasitization was P. pilossus (78%), parasites Rhopalosiphum padi in rice plants. Basic information on the types of ants and parasitoid insects associated with aphids can be used in the development of aphids integrated pest management strategies.

Abstract

ABSTRACTAphis gossypii Glover is one of the major pests of chili pepper and can cause damage up to 65% when the population is not controlled. The objective of this research was to elucidate the genetic control of resistance inheritance character of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) to A. gossypii. Set a population of six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BCP1, BCP2 was established from a cross between IPB C20 (resistant parent) with IPB C313 (susceptible parent). Choice test based experiments was applied with two aphids per leaf on a five-week-old seedlings. The results showed that based on number of individual aphids per plant, segregation of resistance and susceptibility characters in the F2 fitted to the normal distribution, indicated that resistance controlled by polygenic genes. Subsequently based of scaling test analysis, resistance characteristics based on the number of aphids per plant categorized overdominan against resistant parent and controlled by many genes. Genes effect for controlling resistance to A. gossypii infestation was recessive. Broad-sense heritability was relatively large for the infestation of aphids per plant, aphids per leaf, and winged aphids while the narrow sense heritability relatively very low on the infestation aphids per plant and per leaf, indicated by the dominant variance was greater than additive variance. Keywords: action genes, Capsicum annuum, dominant varience, heritabilityABSTRAKKutudaun Aphis gossypii Glover adalah salah satu hama pengganggu penting dalam produksi tanaman cabai. Abstract

ABSTRACTBagworms are reported as severe pests in albizia in some areas. The bagworms species that attacked the plant in Java had been identified but had not been described well. Their natural enemies also had not been identified in this area. This information is essential and related to pest control opportunities. This study described several species of bagworm and their natural enemies. It also described the characters of the bag as a marker of the bagworm type. Samples were collected from ten localities spread across Central and West Java.  Bagworms pupae were collected and reared so that the imago or natural enemies emerged. The parasitization rate against bagworm pupae was then determined. Imago and natural enemies were morphologically described, as are bags character. Four species of bagworm were associated with albizia stand, namely Pteroma plagiophleps, Chalia javana, Clania crameri, and Khopene cuprea. Description and desk study revealed synonymies among bagworm species. Morphologically, a bagworm species had a unique characteristic bag as a type in shape, pattern, and size. Natural enemies were commonly parasitic Hymenoptera and Diptera insects and entomopathogenic fungi. The bagworm species has been associated with a particular insect of the parasitoid. The many synonyms in the particular species need to be confirmed through a comprehensive depth study involving morphological (imago, bag, and larvae) and molecular approaches to overcome synonymies among bagworm species.
