Abstract

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is one of polyphagous whitefly that has been known as gemini virus vector. The identification of B. tabaci is carried out based on pupal case or puparium of red eye fouth stage. The morphological variation of B. tabaci puparium leads to the difficulties on species identification. This research was aimed to study the morphological variations of B. tabaci puparium that has been found in various host plants at various altitude. Samples of B. tabaci puparium were obtained from Sundaland endemic area of pepper yellow curl disease virus endemic areas including West Sumatra, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, South Kalimantan. Slides-mounted were made from puparium and then identification was carried out to species. Observations have been conducted on B. tabaci puparial size, puparial shape, number of elongated dorsal setae, and caudal setae size. Canonical correlation analysis was applied to determine the factors that affected the puparium morphological variation. Based on the results, there were four variations of puparium: oval, oval with 1–2 indentations, oval with more than 3 indentations, and sea shell shapes. The variation observed on dorsal setae number, puparial shape, and size of B. tabaci were supposed due to the induction of trichomes on the leaves surface. Puparium variations were affected by host plants instead of altitude.

Abstract

Availability of sufficient feed ensures the success of the stingless bee’s keeping. One of the foods utilized is pollen. Pollen is powder which produced by male genitalia on flowers and contains protein, vitamins, and minerals needed by bees. The aims of this study is looking for preferences and searching for feed through the identification of pollen at stup and studies the flight range to find food. This research was conducted in 26 villages in four districts on the Lombok island during November 2017 until February 2018. Determination of the sample was carried out using the snowball information method to get 26 farmers and 1.57% stup taken as samples on three different types of land use, there are agroecosystems, forests, and settlements. Pollen samples are taken directly and analyzed by acetolysis and identified in the laboratory. Potential feed were observed directly through plant’s identification that are located within a radius of 500 meters from the hive. The results showed that the stingless bee’s feed from the Bromeliaceae and Cyperaceae in all types of land use. The Liliaceae is a potential feed in the agroecosystem, while Asteraceae is a potential feed in residential and forest land. Stingless bee that are cultivated in agroecosystem tend to look for food around a radius of 500 m, in forest foraging for food outside the radius and in settlement have a 50% tendency to look for food within a radius. This information is expected to be beneficial for the stingless bee’s beekeeping, especially in Lombok Island.

Abstract

Imperata cylindrica is a species of grass that causes economic losses. One of the insects reported to have the potential as a biological control agent for Imperata is the cogongrass gall midges, Orseolia javanica (Diptera: Cecidomyiiae). The development of the cogongrass gall midges is influenced by its natural enemies, not much is known about the parasitoids of this cogongrass gall midges. This study aims to identify and describe the morphological and morphometric characters of the cogongrass gall midges parasitoids. This research was conducted from July 2018 to June 2019. The gall cogongrass was collected from bunds rice fields in Cianjur District, West Java. Rearing the gall cogongrass and morphometric measurements was conducted at the Insect Biosystematics Laboratory, Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University. Three species of parasitoids were found in cogongrass gall midges, i.e. Platygaster orseoliae (Hymenoptera: Platygasteridae), Aprostocetus sp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), and Propicroscytus mirificus (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). The results of morphometric measurements of the parasitoids cogongrass gall midge showed that the female body length of P. orseoliae is 0.65–0.98 mm, and the male body length is 0.69–1.07 mm. The body length of the female Aprostocetus sp. is 1.51–2.02 mm and male body length is 1.13–1.29 mm. Female body length of P. mirificus is 4.14–4.46 mm. Principal component analysis showed that the parasitoid P. orseoliae had no difference between males and females, Aprotocetus sp. females have a larger body size than males, and P. mirificus has the largest body size compared to other parasitoids.

Abstract

Deforestation has a negative impact toward ecosystem and diversity. Landuse change has been known to negatively impact insect like ant and beetle in Jambi Province. This research aims to study the diversity, abundance, and composition of the leaf beetle in the Bukit Duabelas National Park (TNBD) and Harapan Forest landscape. Insect sampling was carried out using canopy fogging method. Four core plots were determined in each land use (as replicates) and each plot consist of three as subplot. Insect was collected in 16 traps (size 1 m x 1 m) that was installed under plant canopy prior to fogging process. The collected sample was sorted and identified in the Biocontrol Laboratory, Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University. Total of 1,040 individuals leaf beetles were collected, belonging to 6 subfamilies and 127 morphospecies. The result of this research showed that a different lanscape has no effect give impact to insect abundance. Different landuse however does significantly impact the abundance and diversity of leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Abstract

Aphis gossypii Glover is one of important insect pest in Indonesia. Genetic analysis of resistance to A. gossypii is required in plant breeding program to obtain host-plant resistance cultivar. Diallel analysis was used to estimate genetic parameters for chili pepper resistance to A. gossypii infestation in early generation. The objective of this research was to estimate genetic parameters of chili pepper resistance to A. gossypii infestation with diallel crossing design. The F1 and parent plants were arranged in randomized competed block design with three replication. Resistance lines was measured using choice test laboratory screening techniques. Two aphids were infested per plant and stopped 12 days after first infestation. Different lines respond was detected as shown by significant numbers of aphid per leaf, total aphid per plant, and total winged aphid per plant. There were no maternal effect and resistance were controlled by recessive and polygenic genes. Gene effects for resistance to aphid’s infestation were additive and dominance. Dominance effect larger than additive effects. Broad-sense heritability values were high but narrow-sense heritability values were very low

Abstract

Infrared Thermography for Early Detection of Pepper yellow leaf curl virus on Chili Plants Observations of plant pests and diseases are generally carried out by looking for visual symptoms for each disease target. Agricultural technology 4.0 began to be used for the development of plant disease detection methods. It was reported that there were differences in color and temperature between diseased and healthy plants which could be recorded by a thermal camera. This study aimed to determine the potential of the FLIR One Pro-IOS thermal camera to record differences in color and temperature between viral-infected and healthy chili plants. Chili plants in the greenhouse that were inoculated with Pepper yellow leaf curl virus (PYLCV) experienced an increase in temperature 3 days after inoculation (28.62 ℃) compared to plants that were not inoculated with PYLCV (27.32 ℃). Digital image recording of chili leaf samples from the field showed that plants infected by multiple viruses (Chilli veinal mottle virus, Pepper mottle virus and PYLCV) has higher temperature than those infected with a single virus. The lowest and highest mean temperatures were recorded in plant samples infected with PepMV (17.74 ℃) and mixed infected by PYLCV and ChiVMV (25.68 ℃). Digital images of virus-infected plants tend to show a predominance of bright yellow, while virus-free plants showed a predominance of dark purple. Further analysis confirmed higher digital numbers for diseased plant images than healthy plants. The thermography method has the potential to be an early detection method because it can detect viral infection before visual symptoms appear.
