Abstract

The research was motivated by the culture shock experienced by Indonesian students studying in Taiwan, related to differences in the education system between Taiwan and Indonesia. The selection of Taiwan for research was motivated by the high interest of Indonesian students to continue their education in Taiwan. The research focuses on the education system, including the teaching and learning process in class, group and individual assignments and exams, as well as internships and final projects. The purpose of this research is to understand the communication experiences of Indonesian students in overcoming culture shock in the education system in Taiwan. The research was conducted with an interpretive phenomenological approach and descriptive qualitative research method. The research used Self-Adjustment Theory and Identity Negotiation Theory. The data collection technique was carried out by literature study and in-depth interviews with six students from Indonesia class of 2020, who studied higher education at the undergraduate level in Taiwan. The results found that students need to take the initiative in initiating communication in learning activities and daily life, for example to get acquainted, ask questions, discuss, and get closer, this is because the communication culture in Taiwan tends to be individualistic. Students need to master the use of traditional Mandarin to support the communication process to overcome culture shock, as the main language used by Taiwanese people. Indonesian students need to approach themselves to live in groups in order to communicate and exchange ideas, especially with fellow Indonesian students, but Indonesian students can also avoid communication, in order to take a break from the pressure of educational culture shock, before finally returning to a condition that is ready to communicate.

Abstract

The world of Hollywood films often presents Muslim identity as a secondary group related to acts of terrorism. This is due to several events in the past such as the events of September 9 2001. Since then Muslims have received a lot of discrimination from American society and are seen as a cruel and violent identity. After 21 years have passed, a superhero series by Marvel has emerged, namely Ms. Marvel. This series is a bold breakthrough from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) because it promotes Muslim identity as the main character. The aim of this research is to find out how Muslims are represented in the Ms. Marvel. This research uses qualitative research methods with a constructivism paradigm. The theory used in this series is Identity Negotiation Theory proposed by Stella Ting-Tomey using John Fiske's semiotic analysis method. The results of this research show that Muslim identity is displayed positively but still only partially. Positive Muslims can be seen through the depiction of Muslims as an identity that is equal to other cultural identities. This equality can be seen through various aspects such as camera angles that use eye level angles, the appointment of Muslims as main characters, and the friendship between Kamala and Bruno. Apart from that, positive Muslims are also depicted through aspects of the characterization of Muslim characters that seem humorous, dialogue that is not related to terrorism, as well as other aspects such as worship gestures that reflect a religious nature. However, unfortunately this depiction is still partial because Kamala's character is depicted as not wearing a hijab. The hijab is a mandatory attribute for a Muslim woman, but in this series, Kamala is shown wearing the hijab in only a few scenes. Suggestions for further research are to examine how Muslim identity is linked to other American minority identities such as Jews, blacks, Asians and others, using other semiotic analysis methods such as Umberto Eco or Roland Barthes.

Abstract

The dissemination of values brought by films as mass media can influence society in constructing ideologies. In media ecology theory, media are considered more than just channels for message transmission; the inherent nature of the medium can be key to a social impact. This includes how various gender aspects regarding the portrayal of women's roles in films can affect societal perspectives and ideologies. "Kartini" (2017) is a biopic depicting the life journey of R.A. Kartini, a national female figure originating from Java who pioneered the women's emancipation movement in Indonesia. This research examines how the representation of women's emancipation is depicted through symbols in the film "Kartini" (2017) and how gender relations occur in feudal Java. This study employs qualitative descriptive research focusing on how Javanese culture can influence gender relations and power dynamics. Representation is conducted using John Fiske's semiotic analysis method, The Codes of Television, which examines the unit of analysis through three levels of social codes: reality, representation, and ideology. The research findings reveal that the representation of women's emancipation struggle in the film "Kartini" (2017) depicts women's roles as agents of resistance, challenging cultural norms and patriarchal ideologies that limit women's mobility within the entrenched patriarchy of Javanese culture. Patriarchy, through Javanese cultural traditions and values, legitimizes the subordination of women, thus necessitating emancipation movements to achieve physical, intellectual, and social liberation as a form of resistance against patriarchal hegemony. The representation of women's emancipation in the film "Kartini" (2017) illustrates how contradictions and negotiations are undertaken by women to drive social change and achieve gender equality.

Abstract

In remarried families, with regard to communication, most research states that the level of conflict and negative communication that occurs tends to be caused by stepparents when there are stepchildren, especially teenage girls. Teenage girls and stepfathers often experience difficulties or face obstacles when interacting and often avoid or distance themselves from each other due to different factors. However, even so, teenage girls who achieve a close relationship with their stepfather also appear, although minimally. This research aims to understand the communication narrative of relationship development between teenage girls and stepfathers. A total of three teenage female sources aged 19-21 years were interviewed to explore the process of developing their relationship from the first meeting to living with their stepfather. This research uses the Todorov narrative analysis method which has been modified by Nick Lacey and Gillespie. The research results show that there are three forms of relationships based on the experiences of teenage girls. The relationship developed without closeness due to initial rejection, attachment to his biological father, and a foreign perception towards his stepfather that could not be minimized. The relationship can achieve bonding because the stepfather seeks maximum self-disclosure interaction and persuasion and accommodates the child's ego from the start. Relationships without fulfilling emotional needs because of children's expectations of a father figure who can be a place for stories and a place to open up. Even so, communication plays a role in every process of developing a teenage girl's relationship with her stepfather, from the initial approach, supporting adjustment, to a more stable and flexible relationship after living together.

Abstract

Liong Hok Bio Temple in Magelang is a place of worship and cultural activity center that plays a crucial role in fostering tolerance and intercultural relationships. The Cap Go Meh cultural parade symbolizes tolerance, reduces antiChinese sentiment, and enhances intercultural tolerance in Magelang City. Although challenges of multiculturalism have lessened, effective communication strategies are still necessary to maintain tolerance. This study aims to analyze the communication strategies employed by TITD Liong Hok Bio Temple in the Cap Go Meh Cultural Parade in Magelang. A descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach was used, utilizing the Communication Accommodation Theory. The communication strategies used by the temple are divided into four parts: problem identification, goal setting, communication strategy formulation (communicators, target audience, messages, media, communication effects), and evaluation, which is split into summative and formative evaluations to assess success, identify obstacles, and provide suggestions for improving the quality of the Cap Go Meh Cultural Parade in the future. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The results indicate that Liong Hok Bio Temple has effectively implemented communication strategies in the Cap Go Meh celebration. These include convergence strategies that integrate traditional culture with Chinese cultural elements to reduce potential conflicts and enhance tolerance, and divergence strategies aimed at highlighting Chinese cultural heritage and strengthening the spiritual bonds of the Liong Hok Bio Temple congregation. Although both strategies are used, the implementation predominantly features convergence strategies. The cultural parade has had a positive communication effect on increasing the knowledge and attitudes of the Magelang community 2 towards Chinese culture, as well as the potential for behavioral changes in appreciating cultural diversity

Abstract

he anime Koe no Katachi is a character development movie themed, where the protagonist, Ishida Shouya, changes into a better personality after he bullies the deaf individual character, Nishimiya Shouko. This research aims to see how Ishida Shouya's character development process is depicted in the Koe no Katachi anime and find out the movie strategy/logic used in developing the protagonist's character. This type of research is descriptive qualitative with a narrative analysis method using the concept of The Positive Change Arc from K.M. Weiland to see the stages of Ishida Shouya's character development. Petrie & Boggs Character Identification Theory is used to analyze the character through the viewpoint of conflict and characterization. The results show that the movie uses three main strategies in developing its protagonist's character: (1) Bringing down the protagonist from a stable position, (2) Bringing up the character's redemption efforts after experiencing the fall, and (3) Bringing up the character's acceptance of reality. Researchers found some shortcomings: (1) Simplification of Karma in the Narrative, (2) Ignoring the Potential for Collective Recovery, and (3) Risk of Glorifying the Redemption of the Main Character. Nevertheless, overall, the Koe no Katachi anime successfully depicts an individual's journey of redemption through a complex and in-depth narrative.

Abstract

The existence of women in society is still strongly entrenched as women are seen as weak individuals and are not trusted to do work outside of the domestic sphere. Among student organization structures, men are considered more appropriate to make decisions because leadership is often associated with masculine values, such as being competitive and aggressive in public life. Women should be considered as rational beings with the same abilities and rights as men, and can position themselves as leaders based on their ability to lead. This study aims to determine the issue of sexism and gender relations in women's leadership in Diponegoro University student organizations. The theories used are Feminist Viewpoint Theory, Gender Role Theory, and Leadership Theory. This research uses an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach, as well as in-depth interview data collection techniques conducted on five individuals

Abstract

Superheroes are a type of popular culture are related with Great Depression in Unaited State. Superheroes represent people's hopes and dreams in solving their problems. Today's superhero movies not only focus on commercial needs but they also bring social issues into their stories. Gundala, a film directed by Joko Anwar which was released in 2019 based on the comic character written by Hasmi. Joko Anwar made adjustments in this movie and included current social issues as a form of freedom of speech that could not be done openly at the time the Gundala comic was made. Resistance as a form of social movement is carried out by society to make social changes that affect their lives. This research aims to determine resistance of oligarchy as represented in the Gundala (2019) movie and the forms of resistance carried out by society against oligarchy. Using deprivation theory as a theory of social movements in order to create social change. This qualitative research is using John Fiske's semiotic analysis method to analyse scenes that represent resistance of oligarchy in Gundala. The results of this research found that oligarchy is described as great strength and power that is difficult to fight alone. Resistance was carried out by people from various social classes as an illustration of oligarchy power that affected all levels of society. Resistance is dominated by group resistance because of the difference in power between society and oligarchy. People who resist individually tend to show their resistance behind their backs because direct individual resistance is considered to be dangerous to them. Therefore, people group together to fight back in order to have power equal to oligarchy. Gundala represent people’s hope to take the oligarchy down.

Abstract

The differences in distance and limitations in physical interaction experienced by couples in long-distance relationships (LDR) encourage individuals to adjust their communication patterns, emotions, and relationship maintenance strategies to achieve the desired level of closeness. Changes in the dynamics of long-distance relationships can affect the intensity of interaction and emotional closeness, which may lead to miscommunication and conflict. This research aims to understand the relationship maintenance strategies implemented by individuals in long-distance relationships, including the maintenance of the relationship, changes in communication patterns, conflicts or tensions that arise, and the resolution strategies applied. The theories used in this study are the Triangular Theory of Love, Relationship Maintenance Theory, and Relational Dialectics Theory. This research employs an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach, using in-depth interviews as the data collection technique conducted with five individuals. The results of this research show that communication adjustments in relationship maintenance are carried out by individuals from the moment they begin a long-distance relationship with their partner. Each individual accommodates their partner's communication needs by utilizing various communication technologies, such as text messages, phone calls, and video calls in their daily interactions. Despite facing challenges related to physical distance and limited face-to-face interaction, individuals strive to maintain their relationship through intensive communication and efforts to sustain emotional intimacy. Each couple in an LDR applies relationship maintenance behaviors to achieve the desired ideal state, prevent conflicts, and maintain commitment within the relationship. Physical distance is not the main cause of conflict but often leads to minor miscommunications and tensions that need to be managed. Conflict resolution in LDRs is carried out through various strategies, such as compromise, increasing communication frequency, and maintaining emotional intimacy through virtual interactions.
