Abstract

Each person carries cultural values that are inherent to them and will take them wherever they go, including when they migrate to new areas with different cultures. On the other hand, Tampaksiring District is known for its deeply rooted cultural values, which are implemented in the social and religious life of the community. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the cultural values adaptation process occurs between permanent migrant communities and local communities in Tampaksiring District, Gianyar Regency. The theories used include Adaptation Theory, Communication Accommodation, Acculturation, Conflict, and Ethnocentrism. This study uses an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach and data collection techniques involving in-depth interviews with six individuals. The results of the study indicate that aligning cultural values through adaptation and communication processes is crucial for creating harmony and avoiding conflicts in multicultural communities. Challenges faced by permanent migrant communities include discrimination, value clashes, and pressure to maintain their original cultural identity in an environment that may not be supportive. However, an appropriate adaptation process can enhance social harmony. Intercultural conflicts are often triggered by ethnocentrism and cultural value discrepancies, but familial approaches and mediation have proven in resolving these conflicts. The study concludes that intercultural communication, openness to differences, and mutual respect are key for permanent migrant communities and local communities to adapt to differing cultural values. For future research, the author hopes that subsequent studies will discover strategies or ways to enhance social familiarity within communities. Social familiarity is essential for creating strong social integration, which ultimately reduces tensions and conflicts that may arise from cultural differences.

Abstract

The high rate of early marriage in Indonesia and the existence of cases of women who are perpetrators of psychological violence against other women are the background of this research. Yuni is a film that specifically addresses the main topic of the reality of women's lives in the Serang Banten area as the main premise. This research aims to determine the representation of sisterhood in the film Yuni. The main theory used is standpoint theory supported by the concept of representation and the flow of feminist existentialism. The method used is Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis through five reading codes. This research found four forms of support provided by fellow women, namely tangible support, self-esteem support, appraisal support, and belonging support. This support takes the form of praise, advice, physical assistance, physical touch, feelings of empathy that arise towards fellow women, and acceptance between women. In this research, it was found that there are myths regarding women's self-silencing due to the existence of patriarchal culture and gender norms in society. Sisterhood is described as a value that can provide a sense of calm, happiness, comfort, feeling of acceptance and can increase women's self-confidence. However, this film also illustrates that the value of sisterhood also failed to encourage women to be able to fight against existing social constructions.

Abstract

With over 272 thousand workers by the start of 2024, Indonesia is Taiwan’s largest source of migrant labour (Workforce Development Agency, 2024). Despite the requirement to undergo practical and language training prior to placement in Taiwan, Indonesian migrant workers frequently find difficulties adapting to Taiwanese culture, particularly due to language barriers. Therefore, this study aims to explore the cultural adaptation process of Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan, and identify obstacles and strategies used for resolution. The theories used in this study are Communication Accommodation Theory and Co-Cultural Theory. It is a qualitative descriptive study with a phenomenological approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews with five Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan. The findings reveal that adaptation process for migrant workers in Taiwan begins with experiencing culture shock, which includes language barriers and lack of knowledge about work environment. Various communication strategies are employed by Indonesian migrant workers in adapting to cultural differences, such as integration and separation strategy, where differences in communication styles and language are addressed through convergence strategy. Additionally, the research identifies that workers overcome cultural barriers, such as negative societal stigma and discrimination, by employing assertive and aggressive accommodation strategies. Based on these findings, future research should investigate the emergence of these obstacles by delving deeper into the efforts made by migrant workers to overcome them, and consider the host society’s perspective to enrich the data.

Abstract

Dalihan Na Tolu as a Batak philosophy and cultural value is a principle in regulating social relations, customs, and providing clarity on the position of individuals in their groups. Even though Dalihan Na Tolu is not a social stratification, gender relations in Dalihan Na Tolu occur unequally. The role and position of men who strongly dominate, then causes women to be in an inferior position, both in everyday life and in the mass media or in the literary context, thus causing gender inequality. The existence of patriarchal cultural hegemony in the Batak ethnic group as well as the patrilineal kinship system that is adopted is a challenge for Batak women because of cultural norms that require women to always submit to men, the use of humor as an alternative narrative to challenge stereotypes. Resistance is then carried out by female characters. unusual and a challenge for Batak women because of cultural norms that require women to always submit to men, the use of humor as a way to fight back. Abstract

Traditional, patriarchal masculinity has reinforced rigid, authoritarian male roles, often leading to emotional distance between fathers and their children. The advent of the information age has ushered in a new ideology of masculinity known as 'fatherhood', which emphasizes active involvement in family life and the cultivation of deeper emotional connections. This study examines the representation of fatherhood masculinity in the film "Hafalan Shalat Delisa" and analyzes the position of this ideology within the film. Specifically, it investigates whether traditional, patriarchal, and toxic masculinity persists within these representations. Employing John Fiske's semiotic analysis, the research will explore the signs and forms of representation within the film.

Abstract

Communication anxiety can be experienced by anyone, particularly by students in an academic context. However, excessive anxiety when having to communicate with the supervisor can hinder the thesis writing process. This research aims to analyze students' experiences in managing the communication anxiety they experience towards their supervisors during the thesis writing process. The theoretical framework used in this study is the communication apprehension theory. The research adopts an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach and employs in-depth interview techniques conducted with six student informants who experienced communication anxiety towards their supervisors during the thesis writing process. The results of this study indicate that communication anxiety not only affects students' emotional well-being but also their academic performance and the quality of their thesis work. Internal factors such as overthinking and uncertainty, as well as external factors like the supervisor's communication style, communication methods, and the level of support, play a significant role in students' communication anxiety. Adaptive strategies for managing communication anxiety, such as habituating oneself to criticism, writing techniques, and personal approaches, show that everyone has their own way of dealing with anxiety according to their needs. Social support from friends and family, as well as good interpersonal relationships with supervisors, helps students feel more confident when facing communication anxiety with their supervisors. Based on these research findings, future studies are recommended to further examine the interaction between students and supervisors from the supervisors' perspective and explore how psychological interventions can reduce students' communication anxiety.
